Hey Scott. really liked this lesson. I was struggling with stings and couldnt understand why but i realize thanks to you're video that was trying to go back n forth to much. Thx
Lockdown + espresso martini + a medium scale EB-3 copy(ish) and I finally understand the 'squiggle'....whatever gets you there these days. Thanks, Scott. (We have met, but you won't remember...unless you're some sort of memory freak).
great work ,, but in the 1st part of the riff C# to B to C# ,, B to D ? has a less dominant value than the following >> C# to B to C# ,, ( A to D ) by using A TO D you get a harder tone on the chord change ,, but hey ,, only 12 weeks until LBGS ,, happy new year Scott : D
So... I bought a bass earlier today after about 7 years of not playing. I've been playing all night recapping scales etc. What do you think the best way of getting back into it? Last time I think I went the wrong way about it by learning song riffs rather than actually understanding what I'm playing, and keeping time to backing tracks...if that makes sense?... what are your thoughts on this?
I used to play the drums ages ago. Started they keys a few years ago, got a guitar relative recently, and although I can't play either, I'm here, watching these videos, longing for a bass. :D
I’m sure it was a MiniMoog. I love playing this with a piccolo bass (I need to get a set of strings soon), into an Octave pedal and then a phaser. It’s such a fun little riff
Many years ago I once attended a clinic about Ashdown bass amps by owner Mark Gooday. He said the bass player on this track used an Ashdown amp with the input gain or `valve drive' on 10, pushing the preamp into distortion, and the `sub-harmonics' effect on 10 as well. Are you sure it was played on a keyboard?
I guess I’m really late commenting on this but how is nobody mentioning Stuart Zender?? I think that’s his playing on the track, maybe with a synth too, but that sounds like his playing. How could his name not come up, Stuart is tremendous and was a huge influence on a lot of players. He’s even got a custom Warwick model named after him. I’m a little heartbroken right now Scott.
LOVE jamiroquai SOOO MUCH. hey scott can you also do a lesson on the drowning years by the Delgados. they are the reason i'm a bass player as well as Jamiroquai
Scott I been watching your videos, youre incredible bro...thanks so much! Im a bass player still learning, how do you make those notes with your pinky finger?? im always using my other fingers to make notes....
Never thought i'd hear someone say check out a deep impact. I know its used by jamiroquia, muse and phish. However the thing goes for about £700, better of checking out the future impact.
JackaL you play those by leaving your fretting hand on the strings without pushing down (so muting), and playing with your plucking hand. Because you're muting, you only hear those dead notes. Scott probably has a pastorius type 16th bass line lesson on here somewhere, this muting technique is typical for those bass lines.
Thanks a lot Robert, i have always understood what you do, i guess i just haven't built up the coordination to fit it in with the lines im playing, do you know of any exercises i could try out.
You could start off with playing a single note, let's say the C on the third fret of your A string, and alternate between playing a note and a muted note. True different patterns to gain control over it. Start with something simple like four notes followed by four muted notes, at a slow tempo, and build up to patterns like a drummers paradiddle (note mute note note mute note mute mute). When you've got that under control, move to a simple bassline, and make sure every time you're not playing a note, that you still play a muted one. So in your right hand, keep playing steady eighth notes, while your left hand is handling the notes, and mutes when you don't play a note.
Guys if i have blisters in my puckling hand fingers (index and 2nd) is it normal or something is wrong with my technique? i started 2 weeks ago. please tell me what should i check in case its wrong...
Minor Pentatonic works over this, all of the runs are in it. There is just the flat 2 from Phrygian in the main riff. I don't think the minor 6th is used at all.
oh scotty not even a fuzz sound will make you change your style. those little vibratos youve heard me do before. stings? yeah, we've heard em. you do them all the time. lol
One of the best riffs ever and strangely often overlooked.
That intro might be the best version of that riff that I have ever heard. I can't stop rewinding just to listen to it.
Love this lessons! Keep up with the good work!
Awesome lesson. This earns a subscription. I'm going to give this a go.
Hey Scott. really liked this lesson. I was struggling with stings and couldnt understand why but i realize thanks to you're video that was trying to go back n forth to much. Thx
What a tune! Great shout!
Excellent teacher you are.. feels like I'm sitting in front of you 😄 the shizzle in between to get you in the groove.. nice man 🤘🏼
Godzilla OST, huge hit, great video. Saw them live in Sarajevo in 2005 - what a gig. Can't wait to see them again later this year.
Excellent as always Scott ! :)

Maybe one of the coolest riffs ever :D
What pick up is on the bass? It sounds beautiful.
Great tips. I always learn from re-watching ... Thanks for posting
This riff is great fun to learn and play. Tyvm scott :D
sweet line to play along with, love the stings!
daaaamn!!!! I want that drum loop hahaha... Thank you a LOT for all your lessons Scott!!!
I was planning on learning this over the weekend haha, what a coincidence
Nice lesson, thanks
👍 Show!!!!!

Great tutorial, thank you.
Excellent lesson.. some great advice on practising too.. Thanks 😁

I haven't played bass in about 4 years but seeing Scott's grooving makes me want to pick it up again!
Trevor Beckett do it!!
:)

Stuart Zender needs more props on this site! The guys a legend.
This wasn’t zender on the recording actually. He had left by then, this song was written and played by Nick Fyffe
@@poivognome792 fair enough, still a valid comment though.
@@tavelaine2914 valid? Yep, of course, I love stu! Relevant? Not at all
LOVE IT !!
Da funk! Glad I ran across your channel!; subscribed!

it's all about that funky french marinière shirt man
thank you so much I did enjoyed the lesson very much :)
Thank you!
you should have done somthing trickier by Jamiroquai. There are realy cool basslines.
love a bit of jaykay
Was actually thinking about learning this song and then bang! Scott the bass god delivered.

Ive watched a bunch of live videos, and its a keyboard and bass.

Nick Fyffe - Not Zender
Zender’s been featured many times. He’s already a Hall of Famer on the channel.
When they cover Jay Kay, Zender is implied.
@@fross1203 I didn’t realize at the time, but years later I now know SBL recognizes his masterful work.
What a crybaby.
@@fross1203Jay would also sing some of the bass lines for Zender to play.
Thumbs up for the epic bass face at 0:10

Scott makes the BEST bass faces!!

How many gloves do you get through?
Awesome!!!
It's a good song. I like the octave pedal, don't like chorus on bass although one needs timbre movement over time.
what is the run at the very end? it is awesome too!
Love Jamiroquai! Can you *please* also do a lesson on "Runaway"? ;))
NiklasStøterau doo bedoo bedoo bada boop deboop badoo bwoodee bwoodee!
Dan Dunning
Very accurate! xD
He has done it already, although I can't remember the name of the video. A little searching should do it!
I thought so but I couldn't find anything... :(
NiklasStøterau I've been looking for his video on it for ages now.
Well Scotty - I love this! I hope you are doing okay, mate! ~Ian Moran
C'mon Scott, you forgot to put the super cool open E note in!😉
What's the difference between a gliss and a hammer-on?
That bass works with KMFDMs 'Super Power'

Nice riff. . . bass players rule
Scottie, can you explain how to the little vibrato thing that you describe at the beginning of the video? Perhaps an exercise to get it going?
I’d like to know this too
Sweet riff! I would love to learn how you do those little mutes, it looks simple just can't figure it out.
JackaL you play those by leaving your fretting hand on the strings without pushing down (so muting), and playing with your plucking hand. Because you're muting, you only hear those dead notes. Thank you very much i will try it out this means a lot to me. Hopefully it will help me build strength with this techinique!
Good luck! Hope it helps!
when i play its hard to use my hand to fret and it hurts and i can help but to use only two fingers i need help i started playin bass 2 days ago
Are you sure it isn't a bass guitar run through a synth pedal on the original recording?
Guys if i have blisters in my puckling hand fingers (index and 2nd) is it normal or something is wrong with my technique? i started 2 weeks ago. please tell me what should i check in case its wrong...
Edgar Duarte It's ok) Just do it with less force for some time, don't hurt yourself) Your skin will become harder and less sensitive after a while.
I know it should be obvious but what is the deal with the glove?
Could you please do an analysis of Home Cookin'?
Esse galego toca bem
actually, the scale you are showing is the minor pentatonic, but the correct scale should be the phrygian sclae, shouldn't it?
Minor Pentatonic works over this, all of the runs are in it. There is just the flat 2 from Phrygian in the main riff. I don't think the minor 6th is used at all.
Pedal effects name????😊
good
Whats that drive pedal?
Db minor? Did you mean C# minor?! :-p #LoveSBL
Stephen Harrison I mean, it is MUCH more comfortable to write the stuff in C# minor. Db minor is a double flat key, brr.
Yep, lol ;)
yeah, When he said "Db, E, Gb", I twitched a bit.
In Bach's time each of those 3 would have been very differently tuned
Damn! It's about time you really started JAMMING. LOL
oh scotty not even a fuzz sound will make you change your style. those little vibratos youve heard me do before. stings? yeah, we've heard em. you do them all the time. lol
and its called hammer on, cause you hammer the string on (c: no offense
Right ... not a gliss (short for glissando). :-)
I should work my vibrato more ! I come from Ukulele and vibrato is not a thing there.
Good lesson but the 2nd note of the main riff is a G#. Not a B.
damm tough........
He has focal distonia.
what pedal?
this sounds like one of the Dragon Ball z kai themes
What are with the gloves
Nerve damage in his hands. he appears to be doing better these day, hes wearing thinner gloves since i started watching him
check his video "why i wear the glove" it explains it all.
Half steps are so hard. Half steps sound so "hard".
Cool... 4 years ago you predicted a pandemic.
I love bass players playing with light strings ; poor things :/
crap lesson, no enjoyment, 10/10
technically proficient but has no soul; check or google darius bass .. that man has funk
