Thank you for this. Also for the extensive documentation. I’m trying to teach my nephews 9 and 6 to think bigger. I regret not going into engineering but I enjoy it
If I may suggest a course of action with the walking problem... Study Biomechanics of bipedal locomotion of birds. You may notice that birds have more degrees of freedom in their hips than you have allotted in your design. By incorporating the ability to do the splits & torsion the legs. Then, apply design specs into a 3D virtual environment for trail & error to figure out an efficient gate. I think another interesting adaptation may be to add wireless charging to the belly so it can sit on a charging pad.
if you know some AI evolving software for walking, leg configuration, and balance that would be good. I think 2 legs should be used for our cars and robots, as it allows robots to move more freeform. Also the head can be replaced with a tablet/smartphone.
This looks fun. I started printing the parts today. I had to fiddle around with the parts in my slicer. Most of them loaded upside-down. Also, I had to add support to some of them. So far, so good. Can't wait for the printing to be over!
Stumbled across this beautiful creation and remembered the discontinued anki vector bot. Hope his legacy will live on and someone can implement support for this robot with a home assistant integration.
Anki was repurchased and is still going... They even have a "large" vector now, as well as a self-standing rolly bot and working on a drone-flying bot ;-) digital dream labs
Digital dream labs even has an open source AI bot software to install on devices like this, to give them native "vector" features, only customizable ..so all the motion, animation, and movement/travel, and object recognition is already in place and just needs expansion or customization. There's a bunch of gpt and self-operating versions of vector this very moment. Digital dream labs actually sued another company for replicating the Anki vector nearly to the tee about a year ago. (They violated patent law).
If you're waiting for the final version you may have to wait a while, but you're more than welcome to join the community in the meantime! bit.ly/maker-forge-community
@@DanMakesThings I should of been a little more clear in my comment, I am mainly looking to attempt your most current revision. 3rd interation I guess. The community you have had form together seems to be a great team players and a lot of chatter on the forums. I can't wait to see what people come up with due to the more modular design.
I like this project and I love how he closely resembles bd-1 from Star Wars fallen order I like to see the progress of this project and even though it doesn’t walk just yet it would be cool to see
Thanks! It definitely could do more with ML in future and it's easy to add modules to the software if you were interested in working on that yourself 🚀
Have you ever seen the movie short circuit? It could be a nice option to use tracks instead of legs...less power consumption and more stability I suppose.
Hi Dan, this looks great! I'd love to see a walking version one day but as you said it would be a hard problem to solve. Whilst working on that, I had the same idea as someone else in the comments - Why not consider putting tracks on the end of the legs, in the style of R2D2 - perhaps with a 3rd supporting leg to increase stability when moving (again R2D2 style)
It's an interesting idea and comparatively easy to add. If you're thinking about trying it out we'd love to hear how it goes: bit.ly/maker-forge-community
Have you considered the person sensor from useful sensors? Its a tiny I2C module and I use it for face tracking. Its about £11 and does all the heavy lifting! I got mine from pi hut, but digikey have them too.
I may look at creating a version with ROS 2 in the future but the goal was to make this accessible, and the barrier to entry for ROS is quite high. I'd like to do something with it eventually, as with Viam.
That's great. There is a Ubuntu blog article that may help break down some of that barrier. It talks about easily setting up dev environments using Multipass and touches on using Blueprints "ROS development on Linux, Windows and macOS Jeremie Deray on 5 May 2023"
Can you make the legs and neck as a different module, and connect a iphone/tablet onto the robot for simple telepresense? I was thinking you could put solar panels and a battery outside, and have the robots wander around in the back yard and at night they would go back to the "tree" solar panel charger to sleep. You could then get a chinese company to mass produce it.
i'm building one lobster-inspired robot as well with Jetson nano and arduino mega. But i'm still on the early prototyping phase. There's some really intricate locomotion mechanism going on, constantly losing faith lol
@@SISSYPUSS I'm stuck on battery supply. Those I need are expensive in Europe, so i ordered some from China yet each shipement takes 3 months and everytime it will get stuck at the custom....I've tried three times already

Hi Dan, I was just ordering if this project is something a first year computer science student could tackle. I guess ultimately, my question is how beginner friendly (in Robotics) is this project. I am only asking this because of how mind blow I am with your project and I am super curious about robotics thanks to you!.
Disappointed that an English guy named Dan, living in the UK, isn’t making Japanese robots.. on a video where he doesn’t say the word Japan once? I want what you’re smoking
My god you guys, does there need to be a sarcasm font or something? This is a joke, and it was pretty funny. Companion robot has a completely different inference in Japan.
NICE. We're posting this on the blog tomorrow!
Fascinating to watch the progress of this project. Great work!

And then you've got Wall-e!! Jokes aside, I totally agree, and I think I'm going to make that.

this project is rad.
Sir ultimate project, it would be so cool to see it grabbing stuff. Maybe fetching water bottle from kitchen With jut voice or something greater.

do you break down how you set up the arduino/ rasberry pi ?

Sure, it's modular so you can reconfigure as needed. You'd have a challenge with the 'wandering around the back yard' bit, but wheels might work ;)

If you have a 3d printer it's not as expensive as you might think. Most of the cost is in the head, and none of that is really essential. 🤑
