- OSRS has been out for more than 10 years, and it's crazy how every single update has marked the beginning of the end of this game. I'm truly heartbroken to break the news to you, but today Sailing has passed another poll which marks the end of the game as we know it.

Many comments have said Jagex already addressed the hiscore problem and that they plan to add a legacy hiscores frozen in time from right before sailing comes out so that the people with 200m all can compete for the new rank 1. I wasn't aware that solution had already been proposed by Jagex so apologies, I just talked about the first solution that popped up in my mind while making this. Just wanted to get this video up ASAP while sailing proposals were still fresh in peoples minds. The 200m all hiscores affects such a tiny part of the playerbase that it probably wasn't even worth me bringing up in the first place, sorry for any confusion.

It definitely was relevant. Maplestory did the same thing with a Legacy hiscore for players that hit the max level of 200 (IIRC it was for the Big Bang update which halved the amount of experience needed to max), which took 4-5 years of 10+ hours per day. Today, level 200 is obtained in a few hours to a day (maybe a week, if you're brand new).
@@aeoliun My assumption is that by that time sailing comes out there's going to be maybe 50-100 people that can actually compete for the new rank 1. 200m all taking only a couple weeks isn't my base case for 2024/2025. But to each their own, none of us have a crystal ball after all
I dont understand why people don't want sailing, it seems like it would fit perfect. Also so much content has been added to osrs already. The only people that dont want this are honestly just people that are thinking selfishly. (Losing max capes, hiscores, etc.) Its sad..
I think it’s pretty cool that the devs made consideration for this already. They really didn’t have to with how small that group is. Yeah there would be backlash if they didn’t, but it would probably be able to be swept away with time since it is a pretty dang small amount of players, albeit some of their most dedicated. But instead of taking a slightly easier route they said they see those extremely dedicated players and lovers of the game and made something extra. Pretty damn cool.

@@SilverionX Its a bullshit point, a lot of the people the sailing drones say dont want change in the game thought the other skills looked more promising and are upset that they literally changed the rules of the vote to rig the poll to force one of those suggestions in even though none of them were unanimously supported. They want to act like we dont want change, but the truth is most people dont want bad change. I love skilling and would love a new skill but sailing looked terrible to me out of the 3. But the only way these people have a point is when they argue against shit nobody said, so thats why they argue against made up quotes

2277 will always be an iconic and nostalgic part of many peoples lives. Like if you get a family member or pets name tattooed then they die, it doesn’t change the fact they were a huge part of your life at one point and had a meaningful permanent impact on you still
Big boy logic! Good on ya, so refreshing to hear this take. I'm right behind you in lvls and not feeling cheated or pressured at all. The only disorienting thing I'll have to adjust to is if they rework total lvl worlds. Maybe they will get funky numbers, or not haha.

I'm against Sailing because it's another skill. With 99 Fishing, Cooking, Mining, Smithing, Firemaking, Woodcutting, Fletching, Hunter, RuneCrafting, and Herblore... we have so many skills that serve no purpose.
Sailing is being pitched as, "Potential" - we got a whole lot of potential, and you're asking for 100-400 hours of my life, when the history doesn't bode well. If you have 6 empty jugs, somebody offering you another because, "It has potential to be useful" doesn't feel all that good.
I voted yes to Sailing on 2 accounts against my better judgment.
I've always considered you one of the most genuine OSRS players / content creators who no matter what, always seems like you genuinely love this game. I'd love to see more videos of you just talking about your thoughts and giving your 2 cents about pretty much anything OSRS

The high level community has stopped the game from becoming so much more incredible. They're the ones that invest the most time in to the game, but they're also the people with a mindset that a minority percentage of players will have. We tried the whole "keep the game the same" thing in 2013, and it took almost no time at all for people to start getting bored and decide that the game needs fresh content. We still have certain skills that have absurdly slow XP rates despite the game being out for 10 years old purely because people have the mentality of "if I had to grind 99 with low xp rates, everyone should have to".
Basically the game needs to be remain fresh, constant change is required in order to survive otherwise people will just get bored. A new skill is great because not every player is interested in questing/pvm/pvp content.
At the end of the day, the game should be appealing to the widest range of players instead of those who invest the largest amount of time playing it.
The people that say "it should be a minigame not a skill" can kick rocks. You can say that about almost every skill.

My only issue with sailing is any time it was talked about it just kind of seemed like "Agility 2". Nobody talked about what sailing could be, just all the things they could put behind it. "New slayer mobs, and dungeons, and islands with hunting and fishing" and it's like man at that point, you're not interested in the skill at all, you're just interested in the content that gets locked behind it. I honestly thought it was the least interesting of the three.

I get what you mean, but the reason a lot of people level up a skill is because of all the rewards behind it. Similarly, locking parts of content behind a skill will make people have to engage with content much slower.
@@TheTundraTerror I get where you're coming from but the whole point of introducing something new is to have it be new. Introducing an entirely new skill just to be a reward gate just seems kind of like a missed opportunity when the other options were legitimately really cool.

Sailing "could be" anything. It could be amazing, it could be terrible. It's such an incredibly broad concept, and such a huge departure from what an OSRS skill traditionally is, we should all be honest that there is risk in this. Sailing "could" make the game worse, it "could" make many people quit. Skills are such an integral part of the game, it's not going to be something people can just ignore if they hate it.
As long as I’m not getting evolved combat or micro transaction pop ups when I open the game, I’m happy. Those are the things that made rs3 feel different to me. It’s gonna still feel like home to me with a new skill.

The idea that people would vote no to a new skill solely because they don't want to have to re-acquire a max cape is so unbelievably stupid to me. If you truly despise skilling so much you can't bear the thought of training a new skill for a month or so, why even bother getting a max cape in the first place? It's a game ffs, no one is forcing you to do any content you don't want to. It just seems so shortsighted.
I agree with the thought of wanting shamanism polled against only sailing. I thought shamanism sounded better, but I still want new skills in general as long as they fit into the core tenets of old school.
Inb4 they introduce a version of the game called ‘old school OSRS’ which rolls back the servers to the way they were in 2007 again

I have to hard disagree about locking in your 200m all rank even if someone beats you there post sailing. There can be a "legacy" high scores that show what the leaderboard used to look like. But, once a new skill releases, its fair game for someone to get #1 rank again.
Hadn’t even considered that, that’s a cool idea if jagex is able to copy the hiscores to keep a separate page for them frozen in time. It would be cool to look back through the hiscores from the past since you can’t do that with wayback machine. I have hiscores screenshots from 5+ years ago but being able to search through a copy of the hiscores from a given date would be a trip. So I’m sure people would appreciate that years after it was created
They can stick it in the box where they keep the League 1 and 2 highscores.

As a RuneScape 3 player (alongside OSRS), I personally disagree with the 200m all sentiment. The hype around the race to world first and speculation around "who the next rank 1" will be is something special in it's own right. Having said that, jagex has already shown willingness to create a frozen archive of pre-sailing hiscores. So I suppose that's a good middleground.

The only thing that will kill the game is the playerbase at this point. OSRS is bigger then RS3 and I think Jagex knows that OSRS would theoretically tank them if it fails. I love how they give us the power to decide what is getting implemented, but I hate how much power they give us at the same time.

I maxed last year in November, before a new skill was brought on for the community to consider. I quit RS3 in 2015 because I got burnt out from the max grind, and because none of my friends were playing it anymore. I wasn’t on the same kind of nostalgia kick that a lot were when OSRS released.
When I started OSRS, I vowed to never focus on solely just making a number go up, to not set my goal for an mmo to reach the only sort of tangible end. In the 7 years I played before I finally hit max total, I just did what was fun and achieved what I thought was cool. I started bossing at lower than recommended levels because it sounded fun. I joined a clan and when Raids 3 came out, I made a serious effort to teach and introduce players to it even if they never tried higher pvm before.
When 2277 total level was etched into my skill tab there wasn’t a feeling of finality. I also didn’t share the sentiment that I can finally play the game. I’ve actually never played each day more consistently since I maxed.
We all make the game to what we decide to make it. There will be updates that we like more and some that we like less. This game will change. What will never change is that it is a game, and that if you can’t make a game fun , or enjoy it… then perhaps you’re playing the wrong game.

Old School describes how the game plays. Not the type of updates. Its Old School Runescape not '07Scape.
The entire idea of OSRS was no EOC and Treasure Hunter. Anyone who uses the "Its not old school" argument should be ignored. If you cant understand what the name of the game means, how can you know what a good update is?

jagex dont rig the poll's but they do tend to put something they want in game into the poll over and over again hoping for better results even if it failed multiple times, this is a fact.
The second fact is: we botters see that jagex's anti cheat team and the jagex client "better at combating bots" (their advertising words) have almost non existent systems holding us back.
In my opinion Jagex should introduce sailing in few parts. It should not be the race for the #1 highscores right after releasing skill. They should add few sailing courses to everyone, so the playerbase can test all locations, not only the most efficient ones. Lets say they block experience so in first 2 weeks you cannot get experience from sailing over level 50, then next 2 weeks lvl 70, 90 and 99. That would focus people attention on actual content, than speedrunning another skill.
I dont think we should have a new skill but atleast sailing has history around the game

Skills are a core part of what the game is. This won't be something people can will feel they can just ignore if they hate it, just like what happened with EoC. For better or worse, sailing is SO MUCH different than any other skill. So there are real risks to doing this.

im actually starting to get annoyed by polling system all together, i dont remember the last time i was exited for new content mostly because you already know everything about the new content before its released. same thing with sailing, why would an average player not want a new fresh skill made specifically for osrs and if they add it they should poll as little as possible about it. i quit rs3 long time ago and i gone and played on necromancy release and diving into a new skill knowing literally nothing was just amazing. so honestly polling would just ruin the experience. i feel like if we trust jagex with mechanical aspects of new content we should put more trust in them in terms of rewards of it etc. they can always hotfix stuff later
im tired of it as well, especially when they change the rules of voting or straight ignore it to just add in what they want anyway. just defeats the purpose and I think games are better when the people making it are free to work on their own ideas and take the game in whatever direction they want. then again, thats how we got eoc, and eoc existing is the main reason we have polls so they cant do some dumb shit like that again.

Spot on. Only thing I would add/edit is that I think it is more likely the 2200 worlds become 2250 worlds rather than keeping 2200 and also adding 2300. This way, the total worlds will follow the pattern of being every 250 levels and avoids the need for more servers or changing regular servers to total worlds. 2250 would be 94.7% of 2376, so slightly easier than the current threshold. Personally, I don't really mind either of these options, but there is a certain satisfaction to having all the total worlds follow the 250 level interval pattern.
That's a good point, it's been so long I've gotten used to it, but 2200 does stand out from the others that are 250 intervals

Only thing i disagree with is the highscores rank point. Whoever hits 99 sailing first(assuming they have max everything else) is then ur new rank 1 player, and say jace hits 200m all first, he's now rank 1 until they release a new skill even if Lynx were to come back and get it 2nd, he would then be rank 2.
16:38 that's not the kind of "caring" you want because it's just straight up toxic in those comments. Honestly it's surprising how accepted it is given how many people in the industry will explain how bad it is for a game.
At the end of the video I think that's what it comes down to: real life circumstances, mainly free time. That's essentially what all arguments boil down to since it predicates our ability to even play this game, but many don't have control over how much of it they have given work/family/etc. Hence frustration which can lead to nonsensical arguments.
For this reason I have high hopes for sailing because it feels like the whole point of "sailing" doesn't need to be behind some 100 hour time barrier like most rewards from pvm/skill training updates, and therefore will be less controversial when it's actually in game.
Ok so hear me out, I don’t really want sailing to be an skill. I been playing since 2011 (so maybe I’m bias) but I do want it to be like an new mini game instead. Where it be an mixture of tempross, temple trekking, and fishing trawler. That’s sounds better to me and you can buy stuff like ba,pp, or nmz.

If anything i want more OSRS bosses. So why not make a whole skill around it, to push more pvm bosses? Literally call the skill Bossing. Itd work along side slayer... Just like how we do wc/fm. Fish/cook. Mine/smith. Etc. Itd be slayer/bossing
better idea than sailing
Having played the game for well over 20 years at this point, Runecrafting being the first new skill release for me, and after watching the mods' videos about sailing, I am confident that they will not be handing us something terrible (like Summoning). The entire game is based on progression unlocking new content. At this point you generally unlock content via quests, but I strongly believe having a skill unlocking other content is a good idea. I am also a maxed ironman, but care very little about the max cape or flex gear in general. For me it is a useful item that I'll happily regain at some point at my own phase after the release of the skill.

As someone who has a max cape and got it within the last year saying " I don't want to lose my max cape" isn't a good reason for me.
I will just go get it again. It's one skill like I will just go level it. If I was able to get agility, mining and runecrafting to 99 I can get sailing to 99.

I've played rs since 2008. I've heard about sailing skill forever now. My 2 cents I would like to see it added BUT not as a skill but as way to train other skills. Build a ship trains construction light the lamps fire making Go diving to for lost treasure trains agility so on and so on. If it's added as a skill cool I'm not leaving any time soon but I did vote against it.

A new skill does promote longevity for the game, but also the acceleration of content we are seeing is giving me serious RS2 vibes where content was being added faster than you could ever hope to keep up.

I agree with the points of basically “more content = more good” trying to sell this game to people that don’t have the nostalgia is extremely difficult. So newer content might be a draw it needs. Like all the dead content in OSRS. Like ah yeah you can play castle wars… but good luck getting an actual game of it and not dragged into bots / boosts.
However your argument of locking in 200m accounts I don’t agree with. To me it’s getting those at the top to fight for their title. Maybe have a old hi-scores but I would have zero interest chasing that 200m if it doesn’t mean anything over someone that got it a decade ago. So archive those hi-scores for their own nostalgia but creating an opportunity for fresh blood to make a name and the oldies having to fight for their place just makes sense to me.
