Let me be very clear, when I say "Do or talking about pretty much anything", I mean that as "All of the Above". No matter the content, your engagement engages others. From lightbulbs to UFOs.

The only downside to a poll is that I can only give 1 answer. I love watching the rare old artefacts, teardowns, chat and complicated build projects, but for a poll I would have to select just one of those. I love this channel as it is, I might miss the occasional video but enjoy watching all the variety of content that you produce.
ATTENTION FRAN:
Being forced to choose only one response is NOT the same as rejecting all other possible responses!
If the poll had allowed multiple choices, I would have selected all but one. So "watching Fran doing what Fran feels like doing" (to paraphrase the selection) was the obvious ”ALL OF THESE" choice!
Another thing: 5% of people choose "Teardowns videos" maybe because the public is already satisfied with the amount of those videos. The question was What do you want More. The 5% result has maybe nothing to do with the appreciation of the subject itself.
I want to see tear downs but I voted for "my doing or talking about pretty much anything" because I assumed that "anything" included tear downs. Same for complicated build projects.
Exactly why I chose this answer as well. Don't read into the results of this poll too techically Fran... we're all here because we all enjoy what you're already doing!

I was in the 37% part and in my mind it just meant "all of the above plus anything else you want". I didn't take it as mutually exclusive with all the others! And I believe that this is the way most others understood it as well!

Absolutely, I find old, rare, electronics very interesting, but if there's an interesting build or teardown, I will definitely watch that too. Random talk or I spores rant, that too - depending on topic

Well ”what do you want to see more of” doesn’t preclude the other stuff! I also selected rare artifacts but your other content can be interesting too. Why not tear downs of rare artifacts or build projects including them? Wrt. to build projects, I personally like descriptions of the theory of operation more than prolonged soldering sessions.

I agree, my fav example of a channel that's done well with this is "Atomic Shrimp", who mostly does cooking, foraging, and scambaiting videos.
Fran - When I looked at that poll, I wanted to see "all of the above", but since there wasn't an option for that, I just chose my favorite, which was the rare artifacts. All the things you do are great, and I wouldn't want to see you stop doing complicated projects or teardowns! Please just keep doing everything you do!

Don’t missunderstand, I like seeing all the types of videos you do. Rare electronic artifacts is just my favorite.

I feel your Poll is flawed. The reasons I watch you are multitudinous. All of the above would have been my response.
Doing anything includes teardowns in my book! Transfers that 37% into that category!
Its a common dilemma, Fran. Thoreau wanted to write in his journal, and swim in Walden pond, but he had to make pencils for a living. Most of us work at jobs which may not be our passion, but which bankroll the things we are passionate about.

This was a bluff. Fran has engineered some kind of weird signal that makes her channel heavily addictive she knows that none of us are leaving anytime soon.
personally, my vote for "my doing or talking about pretty much everything" meant that I like all the videos you make because whats great about franlab is your point of view on your interests, including electronics tear downs etc

I'm very surprised at the 12% teardown, but it makes sense given that you could only select ONE poll result. I did the same poll but more in-depoth and allowed multiple selections and I got many that were around 50% or over, teardowns being one them. I'd repeat the poll using Google surveys or something.
Agreed. I can't remember if I even responded to the poll, but I would have been in the "whatever" camp. I would hate for FranLab to become nothing more than another teardown channel but that doesn't mean I won't watch interesting teardowns. If I had to pick only one it would probably be "projects" but the eclectic mix of electronics, space, and even personal issues is what makes FranLab interesting. Fran, just keep being you! I signed up for "Fran."
A viewer might have chosen A in Fran's poll because he has a mild-to-strong preference for type A videos, because he likes only type A videos and won't watch any others, or even because he thinks Fran likes to make type A videos best and wants to make her happy. A "ranked choice" poll might be helpful, but the best guide to what type of video people will watch most is, perhaps sadly, probably what type of video they have already watched most. As for teardowns not polling higher, Fran is known for her beautifully detailed analyses of beautifully intricate vintage electromechanical devices, and her fans know the number of those available to teardown is pretty finite, too.
I often opt out of polls that don't include an "all of the above" or multiple selection option, because I don't want to influence a channel away from content I'm actually interested in.
Edit: I usually just leave a comment instead.
I was going to say something similar. If had to put them in order, teardowns would have been 2nd behind rare electronics. but the polling system doesn't allow for that.
People who want you to talk about anything whatever would be open to you working on your complex projects AND speaking about whatever. Like Luis Rossman does when he does repairs. We watch him repair stuff AND just rant and rave during the repair.
Fran, you are absolutely right. What makes your vids special is YOU and YOUR interests as you follow them. Your enthusiasm shows when you are interested. Please don’t start “performing” for the poll responders. Being you is what is endearing to see !

This is a lot of the reason why I strictly stick to build videos and avoid speaking about anything as much as possible. I want to do build videos. I started this channel for my benefit as much as everyone else. If I feel the need to be forced into doing something that I don't want to do just for $, then I'll go back to my job as a carpenter where I made more $. I could tap into pop culture trends and spend 10-15 minutes gabbing into the camera about general things and bring in more traffic and earn more ad rev, but then more and more of the audience becomes people who just want to listen to me talk about crap vs people who want to watch a build and learn useful skills, and eventually the build videos get less views because a larger portion of the audience isn't watching which suppresses exposure on the home page and in recommendations. If you want to do build videos, then I say continue doing build videos and you'll attract the audience that appreciates them. It won't make your channel grow like talking about UFO's does, but wouldn't it be more exciting? I mean, my channel is roughly the same size and spend a LOT of $ on my projects, but I don't care. I'm having a blast and still make enough $ to keep the bills paid. I'm not looking to become an obnoxiously rich internet celebrity who rides trends for content ideas. I hope that never happens. If it does, cancel me.

@@Finn_Anwarunya because it's unsustainable and will split the target audience. There's a reason why most youtube channels don't produce 'variety' content and that's this.
Personally I find it really quite unfortunate that Fran's UFO video blew up. It's so radically different from any of the other content that it effectively left her with 100k 'inactive' subscribers who won't watch any of her other videos unless it's some other conspiratorial bs (not saying Fran's video is bs, but most people who subscribed from that video are into other conspiracies... )
This leaves Fran with 2 choices:
1. Pander to the UFO conspiracy crowd and abandon her older audience and the EE community in general. This has massive growth potential for her youtube channel but I seriously doubt this is a move Fran will be happy with.
2. Pretend the UFO video never happened, be left with 100k inactive subscribers who won't watch her electronics vids, and keep getting the same 10k-20k views per video she's been getting for years now.
It's really quite unfortunate because I really love Fran's videos, as she was one of the people who got me into electronics back around 2015, but I really don't see an easy way for her to keep producing the content she does and simultaneously appeal to the majority of her audience :(

It is not your job to make content that other people find interesting, It is your job to make content about things you find interesting. If you bring "YOU" and your enthusiasm, you will be rewarded by creating an audience that is genuine and sincere. It's not about what you cover, It's the way you cover it.

I think teardowns of vintage and unusual equipment might fall under the category of rare artifacts... maybe don't take the poll results too literally - people interpret poll items very differently. On the whole, people really respect you and your thinking... not something to be too disappointed about...

Do whatever you want. People are watching your videos to see and hear you talk about your passions and what interests you… YOU are who people want.
People got to concerts to “SEE” the musicians play the music…they can hear the music anywhere.
There has to be a balance between the original mission of a channel and what the subscribers want it to be. Just do whatever makes you happy Fran as that is what most people would want too.
I still like to be surprised, so keep making what you enjoy as much as you can. I will be watching and still be a Patreon.
I think I can speak for many when I say we’re here for you! There’s lots of RUclips channels that do that other stuff (and I follow them too), but they aren’t Fran. You’re cool and unique and always entertaining. Just keep doing what you like doing. We aren’t going anywhere. ❤️
