mexican here ✨ to comment on the calavera masks thing: i wouldn’t say it’s very disrespectful but just very random. those kinds of masks aren’t really sold in markets or worn by people on day of the dead. it’s more random and kind of stupid to use that, connected to the strange “foreshadowing” images at the mall. but yeah, just playing into the lazy, racist, and reductive world-building of the film

I just discovered your channel and I'm really loving your content could you consider covering Challengers staring Zendaya and the way they depict relationships between Art, Patrick and Tashi.

Have you seen el sexo de los ángeles ? This was another MMF dynamic and I really appreciated the realness it showed of some of the messiness + healing that can come from discovering you’re polyamorous

I didn't catch some of the more racist aspects of the film when I first watched it (except for Chon's entire character; that was obvious and I never liked him because even in fiction I cannot stand military men lol), but man, this movie is so goofy and I recognized it then, even if the polyamory kind of dazzled me at first. It was absolutely not my queer awakening, though. It's a *very* heterosexual movie. I will say that it kinda sorta introduced me to non-monogamy? Like, at age 20/21 when I first watched it, I took Ophelia's "nobody can be as equally in love" line as her just kinda seeing herself and Ben and Chon as special. I actually walked away from it thinking that it *was* very possible for three people to be in love equally. The goofy parts of it though, keep it from being a super enjoyable movie. Take O's kidnapping in the first place. At this point in the film they've lied to Elena's men saying they're gonna take the deal they offered, but are actually gonna dip and flee to Indonesia and they're in the process of wiping everything. They know they're being closely watched. Why the *hell* do they just let Ophelia go shopping one last time?? What is the point???? Literally all she had to do was just stay at the house and wait to leave for their flight. They let her drive herself there, they have one of their security trail her, sure, but he's immediately killed by the cartel within 5 minutes. Another thing that pissed me off. There's a scene (I think it was actually a deleted scene but I've watched it before) where Lado straight up beats his wife when she threatens to take the kids and leave (because he's such a savage! Get it?), I think he even threatens to kill her, slutshames his preteen daughter, r*pes Ophelia later on (cuz he's a savage!!! do you get it?????), *doesn't* get shot by Ophelia in the dream sequence (seriously, it was the most badass thing she did and it's not even real), and then we see him at his son's baseball game cheering him on like he's a good dad. No consequences. Are we supposed to root for him more than Elena? The film kinda implies that. It's so nutty to me! I'll still watch this movie from time to time cuz I like looking at Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Blake Lively, but it's so dumb and, yeah, kinda overtly racist. I can also confirm that the book does in fact contain the "wargasms" line and the "Buddhist/Baddist" line. Written a little differently, but still stupid. Ophelia is also called O in the book because of her loud orgasms. I did not finish it. 💀
Sorry for this essay, this movie has been one of those "I hate it but I've watched it five times" for me and I don't really hear anyone talk about it, let alone mention the polyamory. Thank you for allowing me to yap about it, and I really enjoyed your video. I was wondering if you've seen the movie Newness with Nicholas Hoult? It's not about polyamory so much as a couple having an open relationship, and while I don't think it's a bad movie at all, and there are parts of it I *really* like and appreciate, it's message on non-monogamy at one point, I think, is...kinda harmful in my opinion? idk. I'd be interested in a second opinion if you've seen it. Also your tattoos are sick.
