It is 3:34 or 3:35 am; he’s trying to write a song but is experiencing writer’s block. In the days of actual clocks, it was customary after the half hour mark to call the time as “20 ‘til” the next hour rather than 40 after current one. Chicago is awesome! Thanks.
You have now witnessed what is widely regarded as one of the greatest live guitar solos of all time. Terry Kath was a genius and taken from us way too soon. RIP guitar master.🎸🔥
Having grown up in the 60’s& 70’s, I can honestly say that I was in the era of great music, musicians, and raw talent. I miss Terry Kath. He was Raw Talent at its best.
Keep in mind this is 1970. Just 10 years earlier the prevailing music was lollipop rock n roll, girl groups, and songs about nothing but sweet kisses and long walks on the beach. Early Chicago from 1968-75 continues to be among the most underrated and underappreciated groups in the history of rock.
Yes, Hendrix once famously said that Terry Kath, the guitarist for the band Chicago, was a better guitar player than him. Hendrix made a comment after seeing Chicago perform in 1969. He was reportedly so impressed by Kath's playing that he immediately went backstage to meet him.
Not all are trumpets, One trumpet, one saxophone, one trombone. Terry is rated as one of the best guitarist. Terry passed away at 31 years old in 1978 accidental gunshot.
In the early days, Chicago opened for Jimi Hendrix. After the first or second show, Jimi went to see Bobby Lamm (piano) and asked “WHO IS THIS GUY? He’s better than ME!” His name is Terry Kath. And he did EVERYTHING Jimi did - WITHOUT USING electronics!
These are what are called musician, pretty rare in American music nowadays. Far too many claiming the title cant play an instrument, cant sing without autotune, cant write a song, couldnt write an arrangement if their life depended on it. Its all fluff and FX and studio fixes. You judged Terry Kath on his clothes and was surprised that he could play. The biggest stars today for the mot part are doing pitiful pop with a lot of ass-shaking, hoping that you wont notice. WTF does how he dresses have to do with anything?
There is an excellent documentary on Terry Kath you can watch for free on youtube called “Chicago: The Terry Kath Experience”. It tells about his life and the band, he was much more than one of the great guitarists. The documentary also talks about his death a week before his 32nd birthday when he shot himself in the head with a gun he thought wasn’t loaded.
Hendrix had the greatest respect for this guitar player Terry Kath as well many others . He was amazing ! Terry was also a very soulful singer you should listen to him .
Since you asked... "I'm A Man", "Make Me Smile", "Colour My World", "Free", "Lowdown", "Saturday in the Park", "Feelin' Stronger Every Day", "Fancy Colours". These are all from Phase I Chicago. When Terry Kath died the band's sound changed and so Phase I ended. Phase II is a softer sound.
Terry Kath is so fun to watch during that solo. He looks like one of the Muppets with his hair in his face and rocking that guitar but not moving from that spot.
Me too. I began playing drums in 3rd grade in 1970. Played with the stage, concert, and marching bands up through high school. Chicago got played a lot. 25 or 6 to 4 was certainly one of my favorites.
I read they were up all night, partying, in the hotel room and one guy asked what time it was. That was the answer and he morphed it into a song. Also, the story is Hendrix was asked "How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world?" Jimi answered "I don't know. Ask that guy from Chicago."
Awesome, back to when they made real music. If you like horn sections try Blood Sweat & Tears to get your fix. So the story for this songs like this. They were recording a new album and needed one more song because they were going in to record in the morning. This song is Robert Lamm sitting around trying to write a song and couldn't come up with anything so he just started writing down what he was doing at that time and when he looked at the clock it was 25 or 26 minutes to 4 o'clock in the morning. This song just happened to become their big hit off the album. Terry Katt was the shit on the guitar.
The thing about the great music of the 60s & 70s is that there is so little great live performance footage. Chicago is a great band with members that are still touring. The guitar solo here.....awesome. Great reaction. 😊✌🏼💙
Go dig up their debut album when they were known as The Chicago Transit Authority and play these two tracks: "Introduction" and "Poem 58". Guitar player Terry Kath wrote "Introduction" and sang lead vocals. He was called "The White Ray Charles" by his bandmates. Soulful baritone voice! "Poem 58" is nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. Kath's guitar will have you needing an ice pack for your jaw after you pick it up from the floor! ruclips.net/video/j8aJiLUaWGI/видео.html When they were "The Chicago Transit Authority", they were the house band at the Whisky a Go Go in LA. One night between sets, Jimi Hendrix, who was in the audience, went to their dressing room after catching their first set. He walked up to their sax player Walt Parazaider and said, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs and a guitar player that's better than me! You wanna go on the road?" They said "YEAH!". And that's how they became Hendrix's opening act on a national arena tour.
They started out as Chicago Transit Authority and that was tbe name of their first album. Then the Chicago Transit Authority, the ones who run the El and busses in town said hold up, you can't use our name. So after that it was just Chicago
Back in the mid to late 60s until about 1973 about 99% of men in this country had very short hair, I mean no hair over the ears or touching the collar, you could not even get a job with long hair back then, so this was considered real antisocial behavior back in the day, but the girls loved it! Why do you think men grew their hair long and started playing in a band? It wasn't to impress the men!
Truly this performance was historical. Without a doubt one of the greatest rock bands ever! FYI Jimi Hendrix said Terry Kath was the best guitarist he knew. And the great Buddy Rich said this drummer was his favorite rock drummer.
In the '90's the band told a story about staying up to the wee hours of the morning "six to four" presumably meaning six minutes to 4AM. Growing up in Chicago when this album came out we heard a different story. The question was whether to do another 25 micrograms of acid and stay awake or take a Quaalude to sleep. Quaaludes had a 624 stamped on one side.
I am amazed. You are the first person that I know of who has guessed the closet to the true meaning of the song's title. Next try the same concert, but "Make me Smile".
I’m so glad that younger people are getting to appreciate the music that I grew up with. Great reaction. Never get sick of Terry Kath, he was a master. Hendrix is still number one to me, but Terry Kath was lapping at his heels.
Jimi Hendrix bows to Terry Kath. Eric Clapton bows to Prince. Music is UNITY!! and I wont live without it!!!! Terry Kath, Jimi Hendrex, and Prince are all dead.. yet their music is alive and well.. bless those musical soldiers|!|! Robert Lamb, the composer who wrote the song is on keyboards. ! xo
There used to be a video that had the complete concert at Tanglewood, but I don't know if it's still up. If it is then absolutely check it out, it's worth it.
The reason the band is "chillin" as you said was that if you look you can see 1st the keyboardist and then a roadie is helping the drummer fix his cymbals.
Terry Kath is one of the most under rated guitar players ever Jimi Hendrix seen him play and said he's the best guitarist he has seen and became a fan of his and just think Terry was self taught for the most part
I was 7 when this performance happened. Obviously I was not there. This has been one of my favorite songs for a long time. This is what you would call a God Tier guitar solo. I don't particularly like long solos but this one is something else. Initially I was attracted to the song by the horns.
Mind Blown.. I've seen this maybe 50 times and it gets me every time. It's freaking 1970 and live and the sound quality is top notch.. would have given a bit more to Terry but it's still one of the best live performances I've seen. Amazing indeed ♥️

I got the album when it first came out, I was probably 15. Still today at 68, Terry’s solo still blows my mind. It’s like he has extra fingers…lol.
WELCOME TO OUR ERA, YOUNG FELLA. NOTHING LIKE IT IN HISTORY. GREAT TIME TO BE ALIVE.
Robert Lamm, who wrote the song, is the keyboard player.
Yep. Lamm thought the song was more suited for Peter to sing.
Yes, Hendrix once famously said that Terry Kath, the guitarist for the band Chicago, was a better guitar player than him. Hendrix made a comment after seeing Chicago perform in 1969. He was reportedly so impressed by Kath's playing that he immediately went backstage to meet him.
Chicago toured with Hendrix briefly.
Two of the all time legends. Imagine them playing together.

Never pause in the middle of a guitar solo, that’s reaction 101!!
Or just seconds before the big finish, with the band wailing !!! : [
No one’s ever told you?-pausing during a guitar solo is a definite no-no, especially THAT guitar solo.
We saw Chicago in concert a couple of years ago. Not all members then are the same now, but still put on a show.
The next song should be “Introduction” it was the first song on their first album and really sets the tone of who they are!

Since the saxophone uses a reed, it is considered a crossover between a brass and a woodwind. It is actually classified as a woodwind.
