- Home-built fluid bed coffee roaster. Now Artisan is fully controlling the heating element, and it's able to decently follow the background curve. 500g roast (516g to be more precise).
I also made a backup switch. If Artisan crashes, I can toggle to Manual mode so the Autonics TC4S PID controller takes control of the SSR, and I don't lose the roast (already happened).
- 120x350x5mm custom made borosilicate tube.
- Re-wired heat gun heating element 4000W 220V.
-1100W Vacuum blower.
PID settings on Artisan:
P-4.0 I-0.32 D-40
Lookahead 0sec. Sampling 0.5sec
Automated with Plugin Roast Modbus interface.

Hi, I’m sorry but there are no plans. I planned while building it, and kept changing a lot during the process. The funnels are the only custom made parts I ordered.

@@niepamietam Hi! The TC4S is just a backup to control the heater manually if Artisan crashes. I’m using a modbus interface “Plugin Roast”. Their website is on the description.
Do you think 3d printed plastic for the funnel will be able to hold up with the heat?

1- Custom made with a local welder
2- It varies a lot. I made a second unit and the PID settings were quite different, but on this one I’m using P-4; i-0.22; d-108. Started with D=0, but the more I kept raising it, the better it followed the ROR. With the D higher than 60 it was already good, but now it follows much better than when I made this video
how are the heating elements arranged?

It’s a heat gun heating element rewired for 4kW. It’s inside a stainless steel tube. The path is blower > stainless tube with the heater > lower funnel. You can see the thermocouple Im using as ET. The tip of the heating element is less than an inch below that. I just ordered a new type of heating element that I think will be more efficient, will heat the air better and the air will go through more freely with less drag. I don’t know how’s it called but there are some examples below

I imagine you used a Pyrex bake-a-round for the chamber like Alex Campbell did. What did you use for the metal funnel-like pieces that encase the chamber?
The bake-a-round is too small and very limited in terms of volume. I think he mentions this in one of his videos, that this is a major thing that he would have done differently today. With that in mind, this glass is actually custom made. I found a company that makes test-tubes here where I live and asked them to build a 120mm diameter borosilicate tube. This way I managed to roast 800g at full power and 650g Artisan controlled. I’m about to start another build with a 150mm glass hoping to reach 1kg. The funnels are stainless steel and are also custom made.
@@ifr3293 look up Alex Campbell's roaster if you haven't. Perhaps for a small production roster a bake-a-round is too small which it sounds like is what you might be doing. I can't imagine you need to roast a whole kilogram at a time for personal use.
Haven't seen the video where he talked about the parts. I'd like to know where to get those funnels made.
@@josephplaugher7324 I found a local welder who made them for me. I’ve watched and read about every home roasters I found online before building mine. His roaster is awesome , I think he commented that about he pyrex on a forum maybe, don’t remember exactly where.

Which dimmer are yiu using to control blower? Heater is controlled via ssr?
The dimmer is actually from the blower itself. It’s a pet dryer/blower so it came with variable speed built in. It’s just one potentiometer knob. The heater is controlled via a Fotek 40da ssr, it goes to the Autonics pid controller and to a module that connects to artisan, and there’s a switch where I can swap which one “commands” the ssr.

I really wanted that, but this module I found to buy locally was made to control drum roasters only, so it’s incapable of controlling the air yet, that would be awesome. Maybe one day I’ll try that other tc4+ module, but I would have to buy everything ready, I have no idea how to assemble or program it. Maybe someday
@@ifr3293 random fire ssr and zero crossing detector is doing job fine, mine is working as expected, just dont buy robodyn as its a crap

How much it cost you?
I have no idea because there were lots of tests, things that went wrong and had to be adjusted and re made, I’ve tried more than 8 heating elements when I was building it, but probably something around U$1200. Im building another one and it’ll probably be quite less than that, with lots of improvements on aesthetics and size, but with the exact same functionality, and trying to get a larger batch capacity
