I enjoyed your vlog and your beautiful paintings. I am just back from a week in nearby Gairloch, which was beautiful. Remarkably, I had a whole week without midges, due to an everpresent and very welcome westerly wind. As others have commented, the beach you showed was Gruinard Beach. The beaches at Gairloch, particularly Big Sand are magnificent. For those that haven’t been there or to Scotland, then a visit to nearby Inverewe Gardens are a must. In addition, Midges are not a problem across all of Scotland, and are mainly confined to the west and north highland areas, where there are forests and/or heather. The east side thankfully is free of midges. .
Beautiful country. Yah, gotta love midges - not! They sure can ruin a nice outing! Thanks for taking us with you! Love the countryside AND watching you paint!, Barb
I live in Poolewe. The 'overlook' is a place I played as a child and took my children to play, my daughter now takes hers there. Its even more beautiful to us.
OMG I Was excited to see you stopped in Dingwall, spent a day there a few years ago on a Scotland visit as my Grandfather’s middle name was Dingwall (as were his maternal ancestors)! He was from Edinburgh and grandmothers family were from Glasgow. Love Scotland!❤️😃 All the scenery and paintings were just gorgeous, thanks so much for taking me back to Scotland on a regular basis!
It is always nice to be able to to keep You company on the trips and see more of Scotland. There are places that I wanna see when we will come and check the Scottish Island, maybe we can meet and say hello, maybe paint together or just having a blast
Great stuff Sarah. I go to the Storehouse when I'm across to stay with my cousin in Strathpeffer, it's a smashing place. Summer is my least favourite month, those wee beasties are torturous. October through to May for me are the best. You managed some lovely sketches, and I'm pleased to see you didnt cover them in winsy black dots 😉😄 Thanks again for taking me along, Alioban xx
I've lived in, Edinburgh for 18 years now but I've still not been further up the West Coast than Oban. I know the East Coast and Aberdeenshire area really well, but I'd love to get to the Islands and West Coast for some exploration. Scotland is such a small country, but you could spend your entire life exploring it and never really see the same thing twice. I really apreciate these videos you show us. The totally stimulate the senses and creativity. Also, Sarah, this is a pain in the butt question, but what paint brush were you using in the Car on you last painting stop. It was a good size but seemed to hold a tip really well.
Totally know what you mean!! I've barely touched the surface of what I can explore. And even places I've been to ten times still surprise me. The brush is a Silver black velvet #12 round. My favourite!
Another fantastic video Sarah. I recall trying to photograph Glencoe and being forced out of it by the midges or better known to me as the "Flying teeth"
19 denier tights and two spar poly bags. one bag on thr head then tights. then second poly bag. tights for mitts all good. we fished on clyde ardmore point. people came from glasgow and thought we were mad next week they were doing the same
Yes I think I switched the naming on my hard drive! It’s such a beautiful place. Maybe it’s good this one remains more ‘secret’ (although it’s still off the main road) 😅
That's such a beautiful area...I feel your struggle weve got black flies and sweat flies arghhhh there terrible..thats why I'm a winter gal no buggies....thanks fir showing a bit of the beautiful area..mikelle ny mom....👩🎨🎨
Love this! It's my dream to drive more around Scotland since I never saw the western coast, hopefully next year. I already know I will hate the midgies...=(
Wonderful video Sarah. I really love it when you combine your painting with the Scotland scenery and travel. I'm assuming "midges" are basically mosquitos?
Masses of tiny mosquitos normally appear late May to September at usually at dusk or early morning, predominately in the west coast, though in some areas they can appear at any time if cool and moist and wind-free. Use Avon skin so soft, or Tabard or a midge net, not a mosquito net.
@@sarahinscotland Your country side is so beautiful❤️. Watching the sun move across the mountains….so magnificent. I can’t imaging seeing all of this in person…..priceless. Thank you so much for taking us along on your journey, and having the opportunity to watch you paint. So sorry your journey was cut short but so happy we got to see some awesome views!
Haha ! The midgies are absolute hell aren’t they ? But consider how busy these beautiful places would be without them keeping the real pests away……. Tourists - 0 Scotland - 1 🙂
Hello Sarah Do you mean mosquitoes or do you call midgies, what we call sandflies (much smaller insects, and much itchier bite, and more bites per limb?) Wow you did heaps of work and driving in one day....it felt like you had one day to do all this, with other commitments, kiddies and partner.... I like the paper in your sketchbook, and think your quick sketches are delightful. What paper and what ink are you using there? Your drone work is beautiful, and still. You got heaps done despite the weather and the midgies...... In kindred spirit Eliza, Dulwich Hill, Sydney xx
@@michemman I can confirm they are not mosquitos, nor sand flies. They are tiny, but ferocious. I’ve just spent a week in the same area and for the first time ever, I never saw any midges due to a strong wind, which they hate. The previous year, however was a nightmare, particularly at dawn and dusk.
I loved this so much Sarah! I wished it was longer... so the circle on the ground that you flew over with your drone, do you know what that was? So is this the trip you planned to camp in your car and what was your solution for the windows if so? Finally, if you go on trips in the winter are there still midges?... we have midges by the river here in Florida but I rarely see them and they don't bite I don't think so it must be a different variety...
Do you mean the little island? There are several islands on Loch Maree. In fact it's the only Loch that has an island with its own lochan that contains an island. So meta! And no, midges are only around like late April until maybe October. Yes this was the west coast trip that I planned for a while but rather than sleep in a hot humid car I went home late. I did make curtains by cutting up a blackout curtain and the pieces are attached to the windows with magnets. But I'll show that in a future video when I do an overnighter!
@@sarahinscotland towards the beginning when you first flew the drone, you flew over a peice of grass that was a distinct circle shape, maybe an old collaped wall for containing sheep or something...it was interesting and I wondered what it was. Old places with so much history is interesting.
I always wanted to ask: was it difficult to get used to driving on the left side of the road and having the steering wheel on the right side of the car? 😳
Been to loch Maree, really beautiful loch. Midges....have you never heard of 'original' Avon skin so soft? The British commandoes use it, as do I. 1 bite in 5 years says it all. Buy it, use it, no migdes!. They are a pest but be prepared, they are no longer such a nuisance.
Yes I’ve heard of it. It doesn’t work well in some areas because we think the midges have acclimated if you know what I mean. We tried it a few times and they still destroyed us 🤣

You have to pick the weather to minimiise the midges - breezy or full sun. A clegg bite is worse
