Scofield is totally unique. He can play bluesy and funky but he also can play, with total authority and authenticity, the most advanced bop. He really knows harmony inside-out and he has that elastic phrasing that guys like Charlie Parker had but you don't hear in guitarists who come out of fusion. He's a great composer, too.
Right on! I really appreciate John Scofield. Such a vast library. I will admit, about 35% of his work I could take it or leave it and maybe 5-10 % I do not like at all. But damn, considering the amount of material this guy has put out and continues to put out, it amazes me how much wonderful and unique material one artist can manufacture on a consistent basis for so many years. His playing puts you somewhere that no one else has the ability put you in, which is my standard for what I consider “truly unique”. Not to mention that fkn tone. That chorus/fuzz tone that he uses at the end of this jam and randomly throughout other numbers of his (not exactly sure what effects he’s using) is so thick and soulful, even at a quiet volume. As time goes on, I appreciate Scofield more and more.
@@82camino96 When Scofield solos he does what the other jazz masters did in the past, which is tell a story - you hear him in the process of discovery. Most modern fusion players tend to play chops and they're impressive but for me what they play lacks the depth of master horn players like Joe Henderson or Sonny Rollins who really took you on a journey.
You too can shred like Sco if you wear socks with your sandals! A Go Go was one of the first CDs I ever got, haven't stopped listening to it since. And this version of Chicken Dog is pretty special!
love the keychange at 2:04 and 2:14 -2:20 is just killer.scofield epitimizes playing from the soul(in my opinion)he talks with his guitar...these guys are some of my favorite players
Can't think of a band in funked-up jazz I like better than MMW. I've been hooked since "Combustication". Add Scofield, and it's like having a birthday cake when it's not your birthday ;)
Saw them last year in Memphis sitting in a puddle of mud...literally! It was a great experience for me and definitely one of the best performances I saw there other then Snoop Dogg (haha)... :)
Nice. Great grooves. I always loved how they seem so attached to their music when they play. Entertaining to watch and to hear. I wonder what Scofield gets so pissed about at the very end. Literally, the last 3 seconds, he looks down and...something is messed up.

I wouldn't consider that a mistake...it fits very well as a passing note (A Bb C: all of them in D Aeolian), though anyone can have their opinion. Personally, I really liked note A there...
this song is really minimalistic, but i get the notion that these guys are really enjoying playing this song. they are all moving around a lot on stage, kinda doing the 'chair dance' thing. seeing medeski singing to his notes really makes me laugh
Well, I think his tone is cool - but it's that chorus effect he puts on his guitar, if he used a more clean sound his tone would be better. I think he kicks major ass and this is my favorite song by him.
you know this was old because john medeski is skinny and has almost a full head of hair. and billy martin looks like a little kid. but like fine wine, these guys have only gotten better with age.

@urlhammer they are singing their solos outloud as they play them. It is a technique that some people find to help them while improvising.
Nobody could have put it better. That's exactly what I think about this Master Guitarist. Also, MMW make a great team to play with him.
