- It's a real blast from the past. Developers Lucky Mountain Games and Sumo Digital have crafted a fine tribute to Sega's best racers of the 90s. You can catch flashes of Outrun and Virtua Racing, all blended into a modernised arcade racer at 60fps. Flat shaded textures and low polygon models are the order of the day - as John and Tom discuss.

I can't believe I loved Ridge Racer for ps1 as a kid. It literally had one track. One fucking track!? But damn I loved that shit. And the really long hard process of unlocking the secret black car. It'd turn up midrace sometimes and you had to beat it in the race despite it having maxed out stats for speed, acceleration, handling, all of it. I managed to do it once I think. It was like 25 years ago. But I think I managed it. Might have been with my Xploder cheat device though (like a game genie/game shark)
Today racing games should have like 20 tracks minimum. Even mario kart 8 deluxe on switch is really lacking with content. It doesn't even have a story mode. It's such a lazy attempt at a game. But yeah these days, shouldn't every racing game come with 100+ tracks? We have the hard drive space now, not limited by CD or dvd or even blu Ray size capacity. Yet even today, you see premium AAA racing games with like 10 tracks and that's it, and no story mode. All of it. Shameful and lazy. Ridge Racer I can excuse because it was all about the spectacle of how pretty and 3D it was. But not racing games of today. At least Ridge Racer was corrected, with Type 4 which low and behold had more than 1 track. I know, right? But yeah despite stuff like the huge open worlds of breath of the wild and GTA 5, there's not much that's a similar amount of content but for racing games. You know?
The reason the gran turismo games were so good was because of the insane amount of content. Gran turismo 2 even came on 2 discs. All I want is a gran turismo style game for the switch, with the big and involved story mode and licenses you have to get and different types of cars like F1 and stock cars and touring cars and rally cars etc. GRID autosport is somewhat like that but really by comparison is a very cheap imitation, it's lacking in actual content.
@@duffman18 I’d much rather have 20 finely tuned and fun tracks than 100+ average at best tracks in my games, it sucks that racing games take a bit of a back seat. I feel a lot of racing games nowadays are more reliant on tight gameplay and refined courses rather than loads of content with an alright driving model, games like Mario Kart are so popular due to mass appeal with the refined gameplay which is vastly replay-able due to how varied each race can be.
I want Ridge Racer back so much though, I still regularly play Ridge Racer 1, 2 and R4 on my PSP.
@@mookid2223 i know exactly what u mean mookid, i played the hell out of Ridge Racer 4, i remember the yellow casing it came in, it was a two disc game back in 98, or 99,.........sure miss ridge racer, especially RR4, when i saw Hot Shot, it just brought back fond memories of Ridge4, now i'm playing the crap out of Hot Shot, taking some time off from playing destiny2, but what a great and fun game to get away from all the looters and shooters game types every once awhile, really enjoying HSR🏎🏎🏎👍

Horizon is more akin to Top Gear, a SNES Game. This one is more like Daytona USA

@@TrevorJones1 No Virtua Racing is a 3D racer in terms of how it plays, HCT is like Outrun where you "strafe" left and right on a track.
Textureless 3D graphics look so good in high resolutions and framerates.

Outrun2006 is a free download on abandonware, practically the same game, works well with a wheel and pedals, you’ll need a PC though

@@Orochi_001 Well, with their new standalone mini arcade cabinet, maybe Sega will be more willing to release packs of classic arcade games in the future. There are plenty of arcade games Sega made which never got faithful home ports.

Sega needs to port Daytona USA to current gen consoles. Their likely to be compatible with next gen unlike the 7th Gen (360 Daytona USA isnt in the XBO compat list I believe).

I remember how "WTF AMAZING" that was when it first came out on, what was it, xbox 360? With the terrain deformation in the mud, snow and sand. That was the most insane thing i ever saw in a racing game that time LOL.

We need more franchises resurrected from the past! How about an updated golden axe ala SOR4 style?
Honestly, I think that if they want to reboot Golden Axe, they should do it in a God of War style. But Sega will never spend the money for this.
Gameplay wise, Golden Axe was cool at the time, but unlike Streets of Rage, I don't think it would translate as well.

The problem is that in many countries, the arcade industry has been in decline over the last two decades because gaming became more mainstream. So the arcade departments need to make a game that's actually playable for a longer time at home.
@Dirty Pixels I loved that series indeed. Personally, I also liked the original style of Need for Speed. Beautiful street tracks and cool standard cars with no tuning.

@@cocobos the funny thing is on the Dreamcast, if you turned that effect off with a code you can get a solid 60 fps.

I had the pleasure of producing 12 songs for the soundtrack on __ Hotshot Racing! __ I grew up in the arcades in the '80s and '90s and to be able to really put that inspiration into the music was a dream come true for me. I even went as far as to use gear from the late '80s and early '90s for authentic sounds that would have been used on video game OST's back then. It's for sure a hybrid OST.
I am SO happy to see everyone enjoying it. I began writing music for Hotshot in 2016, so this is a LONG time coming for everyone at SUMO, Lucky Mountain, and Curve! I hope to see you all on the track online!!

I digitised a copy of Coast 2 Coast which fortunately still works flawlessly on Windows 10, that's really the best option right now.
Outrun 2 with bonus Daytona 2 and Scud Race tracks
Unfortunately since Outrun 2 and 2006 used actual Ferraris, they would have to keep paying Ferrari to use their cars in the game. That's also why you don't see Sega Rally Revo around either which is a rotten shame! These games are some of the best racing games ever made and they definitely deserve re-releases but Sega would probably lose money to make them legal to sell again.

@@CubamusPrime They could. They need to get the developers who made Horizon Chase to show them how to make the cars look almost just like the real thing without infringing on copyright. Either that or get Criterion to show them. They've been making their Burnout games with good looking fake cars for 2 console generations.
@@OldsXCool Sadly, Sega seems to believe the Ferrari license is integral to the OutRun experience. It does add something - the red F40 is genuinely iconic as the classic OutRun car - but I'm sure most people would happily accept driving a lookalike "Farrago F1-11" if that's what it took to get OutRun 2 / C2C back on sale for current systems.

Anyone into arcade style retro racers should really track down Horizon Chase Turbo also, it's a belting game.

no, that was a wanabe game, this is the real deal, that game tried so hard to imitate the games of old, it looks great, but the feel is not there, this on the other hand is a dream come true.....
Horizon is trying to emulate console racers from that era, not arcade. So I think it does that fine, even if the map designs arnt that amazing to race

Don't sleep on *Inertial Drift*. It's a twin-stick racer [yes, twin-stick]. Loads of fun if you can ignore bad character design, storytelling and some average looped menu tunes. The racing gameplay, music, and visuals are solid! Has a 90s vibe!
I would be so happy if this came to VR headsets, I'm not aware of anything like this for VR right now and it looks awesome.

I love the fast, smooth and arcade style racers.
The game looks great, and I'll probably buy it soon. I already loved Virtua Racing on Switch, and Horizon Chase Turbo. And here's hoping that "90s arcade racer", a.k.a. "90s Super GP" eventually gets released.
Additionally, so many great Sega racing games are still left stranded in the arcade, whether it be out of their ill will, licensing issues or any other reason, to the point where it's borderline criminal.

Great idea. Cant see any pop in either on Pro consoles.. 1 question though. Outrun 2 had great draw distance for its hardware in 2d is 3d hindering 'draw distance' in modern games ?
Outrun 2 was 3D. That game was adept at streaming assets in, and they were very clever with the track design. This game seems to be lap based, its likely that the whole track is loaded into memory from the beginning of the race
Looks like Horizon Chase, which is good because that game was awesome and got the retro vibe extremely well done.

In the first Ridge Racer on PS1 drifting put the car on rails meaning that you could initiate a drift by turning the wrong way and over take your friends while confusing them with a counter rotational 360. Skillz.

I JUST picked this game up. and boy let me tell you it's a diamond in the rough! Having grown UP in the Ridge Racer arcade era, this game hits all the right spots perfectly. I applaud the game director for this title. It's like he/she either grew up in this arcade racing era or did A LOT OF RESEARCH bc right from the start this game felt like a proper 90's cab racer.

Honestly I would love to run the game in native 320x240p to create jagged edges and make it feel like a Saturn, PS1 style game completely.
Maybe you could force it to run like that? In the video driver, or via Windows commands applied to the executable?

It's great to see the games industry come full circle and return to this style of game. We need so much more of this type of game. Sometimes, you just want to play a game, not sacrifice half your days for weeks immersing yourself into another universe. This brings us back to an era where gaming had this certain "one more turn" magic, that just sucked quarters, or dollars out of our pockets. We slowly turned away from this style of play, focusing on more complex, and more involved games, but it left a huge hole in where these games needed to be. The past decade has shown us that while AAA games can be awesome, and also help puch hardware forward, sometimes we just need a simple, fun diversion for an hour or two.
Hope there is a physical release for this eventually!
Im a little confused about why it's not able to hit 1080/60 on XBOne. If it really is flat shaded (which it looks to be except shadow maps), then all the gpu really has to worry about is vertex/face shading and texture sampling. There's not a lot of polygons so I can't imagine they'll have much trouble with the vertex shading. Then since almost all the lighting is done in the vertex shader, the pixel shader doesn't have to do that much, so I don't see why resolution is an issue.
Another great video. I've been enjoying this game on my Switch. It's great to play a Sumo game that runs at 60fps on Switch. I wonder if they'll get this on next gen running at 120fps...
I haven't even completed the first minute of the video and you already said that it's a racing game by Sumo Digital, so I know it's great.
Picked it up a few days ago on launch for Steam. Wish the levels were more "active" (regardless of generational setting) and the music could be better, but it's a fun game. Need more Indie/small games from this era and the PS1 era!
I can't help it, I love the non textured polygonal style.
This one seems to have also 4 players split screen on PC, which is awesome.
I'm just not entirely convinced of that sliding mechanics. I'm playing with manual gears, and I'm doing anything I can to not make the car go in "slide mode", it's so detached and forced.
More games like this we need this.)

How come you didn't talk about the PC version? I bought it on Steam and it's running at a solid 60fps on a GeForce GTX 2060 at 2560 X 1440 (the native resolution of my monitor). I could probably run it higher but that's as high as my monitor goes.

9:50 I personally prefer using the face buttons for racing games over using the triggers. This also looks like a game that I'll be playing more on Switch.
That Outrun 2 game looks similar to Cruis'n USA that I played on the sit-down arcade that was in store's.
Think about how Michael Abrash and John Carmack were blown away in VR by a simple room with facebook screenshots plastered on the walls as textures. You can make something beautiful as a small team much easier if you scale things back.
I turned off my adblocker and gave you a Like because your co-host gave praise to the God game, Ridge Racer, boi. That whole series is God-game-tier.
Track Mania Turbo has excellent arcade physics, I wish it had more traditional races rather than just (very high quality) trials. Same goes for Absolute Drift.

I love the look of this game. It’s the throwback of polygon graphics that I always wanted to see on home consoles. It’s so crisp and sharp.
I much preferred "90s Racer"'s look, but at least this game will come out, unlike 90s.

Souljastation 5 It’s all about simplicity, stylization, and uniformity really. The “gaming hipsters” can have the blocky pixels in their 2D games if they want, it’s not my thing. I respect those people though, because if it weren’t for them no one would be playing video games today.

I call gaming hipsters those people that didn't lived the 2D era and think that "sharp pixels" (i.e. a horribly pixellated picture) is the way to go, while actual developers of the time did anything they could to try to mask the blockiness of the limited visuals of the time.
I play 2D games mostly on CRTs, but when I have to play on a flat panel I always choose the "blur" filter (better if with scanlines), conceptually it's no different from a modern anti-aliasing filter.

Configurable controls would be nice, get gear changing mapped to the face buttons instead of LB/RB. A great game and worth a play especially at the cheap price.

i had the same problem WITH VR. granted it was a vive in like 2016, but project cars looked like a blurry underwater mess. i couldn't see corners coming due to the shitty resolution, even though it was running on a then state-of-the art overclocked 980ti
