I just realized that your suggestion that what allows him MacReady to act without the same kind of attachment to their (former) teammates when taken over by the thing is that MacReady was always the outsider of the group, is actually foreshadowed and established right at the beginning; everyone else lives in dormitory-like living accomodations within the compound, but MacReady lives in a house on stilts. He's quite literally an outsider.
Oh so what your saying is, A man pushed the limits of special effects, plot, health and budget and made a film way ahead of its time... And everyone hated it...
Uhhh yeah there is a reason is called ahead of his time, if aliens gave us the ultimate perfect tecnology how are we supposed to used it when we don't even know what it is?
The Thing is one of the only films that scares me every single Time I watch it, not just from the visuals but from just from the idea of the thing and also how much of the the things movements and sabotage is left out
My theory for Blair is that he believed he was infected, and tried to hang himself to keep from turning, but then the thing took him over completely, removed the noose but didn't know it was an object of murder/suicide so it left it up.
I saw someone argue that the thing is attempting to use reverse-psychology. Blair-thing wants to work on the ship and does not want to get back in the base so it intentionally makes itself sound overly suspicious
Hilariously enough, my opinion of The Thing is like that of society’s. My dad made me watch it with him when I was 14, and I hated it because it creeped me out and I thought it was too pessimistic. Now, years later, it’s one of the few horror movies I actually enjoy, and i enjoy greatly.
It's kind of relieving when you find out all Saints are sinners too. Police men work only for a check, your public safety is just a trade. Politicians are slime, all act only at the whim of their party. Even Mr. Rodgers has some dirty laundry I'm betting. That's what the movie makes me think, that everyone is still carnal, still just trying to survive. At whits end, when you're at death's door, no one is worth more to you than yourself.
I think I first watched this when I was like 13, I really loved it for the psychological horror aspect(I'm actually a Psych major now), and it gets even better the more you realize how "real" it actually is
the way that the critics brought up their distaste for how realistically the characters acted really shows how out of touch a lot of people today choose to be
And considering how horrible the inner workings of Hollywood are (which people have become aware of because of people like Weinstein being exposed) it makes you wonder if those critics were simply made uncomfortable due to seeing a familiar reflection of themselves.
I watched the Thing as an adult and initially I thought how terrifying can practical effects be now? That spider head scene creeped me tf out! It's incredible!
I know right?? People absolutely LOVE practical effects almost universally to the point where you can market a film based solely on that, but for whatever reason Hollywood always goes the CGI route smh...
I don't know why in modern horror they insist on CGI over practical effects. Any other genre it's fine but horror should be practical effects first sprinkling in a very small amount of cgi to enhance the practical effects.
All crowds are made up of singular people. I understand the quote but people think they are immune to group think. We all do. I do it sometimes and it worries me.
The big issue with critics is that they're still people and still vulnerable to peer pressure and the Overton window. When that window is against edgy stuff, they likely will be too and any critic who doesn't step in line (Just Reviews who does albums and pop songs) will be heavily ostracized and possibly even de-platformed too.

@@popopop984 It's not meant to be entertaining and enjoyable on a visual/narrative level. A bunch of people get super paranoid and die in fear isn't exactly meant to be heartwarming. It's enjoyable in more of a cerebral way, putting yourself in their shoes, thinking of how you would act, or what they should have done differently. Asking who's right, who's wrong, and who's just crazy. It's more of a philosophical 'entertainment', much like all those thought experiments of "What's the most painful way to die?" or "What are the odds of something terrible happening to me?" The answer isn't really something you want to know, it won't be satisfying, but in some morbidly curious way it would be interesting.
Wait a minute, if each cell can be a separate monster and split off from other instances of the Thing, and with some theorizing that Macready himself could have been a Thing and fairly early on at that, is the suggestion then that the Thing finds itself in conflict with itself? An imitation doesn't know just by looking which of the crew are also initiations so each instance is also in a state of paranoia about the others? That would add such an extra layer to the movie if the monster doesn't even know who to trust. Whoa.
I think I’ve heard it said the thing has been shown to deliberately attack other “things,” if it means it can allow it to deceive people and to survive and further the cause. And yes I think it’s been established that each thing can recognize a kindred thing. But that’s kind of an interesting take
I've always liked to think that by the ending of the film, Mac and Childs are both assimilated. It's a pretty grim outcome, but at the same time it offers a little hope for humanity. You've got two Things that are sitting and squabbling with each other, which ties back into a moment of the book concerning the Things essentially getting lost in character, and also demonstrates the inherent flaw in the strategy of intelligent creatures that use deceit and treachery to get by: eventually, they're going to turn on each other.
No, if you watch carefully you can see that the infected are looking out for eachother. For example, when MacCready burns the thing, the 2 we later find were infected are RIGHT out front with their fire extinguishers. There's other easter eggs as well. It knows what it's doing all along...
The Thing is still one of my favourite horrors that relates to body-horror. I am absolutely smitten by the special effects, even to this day. In a timeperiod where CGI is prefered to practical effects, I think it's important that we hail the films of ages past that are powerhouses when it comes to effects that aged really, really well - The Thing, Alien 1 (that chest burster, so good) and Lord of the Rings (specifically the battle for Helms Deep with the scale models of the keep) are just some of the films that can still make my skin crawl from the sheer talent. Thank you for this unexpected but entertaining dive on a film I love.
Glad he 'shined the light' on the cinematography too as when pointed out i finally realized just how essential it was for the practical effects to be as effective as they are.
@@cockroachafro for real. film-making at its finest. I'm happy that today most of us realise the importance and the value of John Carpenter's The Thing.

I believe Blair was already assimilated when they went to ask him about Fuchs, he was getting ready to neck himself when Norris-thing got to him, or Palmer-thing if he had already been assimilated too.
Nah, Blair was assimilated already by the time he had locked himself in his office. He wouldn't have had enough time to grab all the spare parts from the helicopter and tractor to make his craft if he didn't get assimilated until around the time Fuchs death happened. I mean, it's pretty much assumed that Blair is the shadow figure passing the lab and who got to Fuchs. Blair destroying the radio and vehicles was all a ploy and distraction to make it look like he was keeping anyone from leaving but you have to consider the fact that, Blair-thing already had other plans for getting to society. He destroyed all the equipment to prevent anyone at Outpost 31 from contacting the outside world and warning them. That way, he successfully isolated everyone and could then assimilate or kill the rest and then bail. This also helps his backup plan if the main plan fails. If it did fail, then they would still be cut off and by the time help came to check on them, all humans would've died from freezing to death and the thing could freeze and lie dormant until found and THEN attack. Therefore, Blair had definitely been assimilated early on, assumed by most to be off screen, my thought being by the dog and before the Palmer/Norris wall shadow assimilation. The dog, when walking down the hallway, could've been just coming from attacking Blair. But yeah, it just makes so much more sense that way. It would be way too much of a coincidence if Blair had destroyed the vehicles and stuff as a human to stop the thing from leaving and then a day or so later as Blair-thing, end up using that to it's advantage. Anyways, cheers!
There’s an extremely acclaimed theory about the Thing: An advanced alien race which had already developed space travel, discovered a strange creature on a different planet, which had the ability to amalgamate and perfectly imitate any organism it consumes. The aliens decide to study it and maybe use it in one way or another. However, the Thing samples somehow escaped, wiping out the entire alien race. What was left of that race tried to escape and colonize other planets as their home. The Thing once again managed to hijack one of the ships. The crew members pulled an Among Us and died off, one by one, being assimilated by the Thing. The last alien finds a planet, Earth. The alien then decides that destroying the monstrosity that wiped out its race is more important than its life. It crashes headfirst into the planet, but the Thing survives and assimilates the alien, then bursts outside, but freezing in the Antarctic expanse, later to be found by the Norwegians, and ultimately the Americans.
Definitely makes you wonder just what kind of planet a creature like THAT could come from. What ELSE lived on that planet? Are there some life forms even The Thing can’t or won’t devour…?

I agree. I’m sure E.T. is analyzed for its brilliant story telling too. Seriously, John Carpenter was dealt a bad hand, at least his work is getting the appreciation that it deserves.
Just like the protagonist of the movie feels so threatened by the monster, so does the audience of the early 80s feels creeped out by how different the movie is from the standards. They were so close-minded to the elements that made a movie "good" to them at the time, that the sight of something so terrifyingly new made them act more on instinct and to reject it, much like animals react to something they have never seen before. it wouldn't be until later that more open-minded audiences would start to fully appreciate the movie and to understand how innovative it truly was.
@@succubastard1019 I completely agree with what you're saying. For as close-minded as they were could they at lest be more specific? Criticism is just insult without any real reason behind it.
Watching this film when I was young, I would always just watch it purely for the effects. As years have gone on though you really take in consideration how smart and just expertly crafted this film is, even with the limited ranged score. I watched it last night and it gets better and better with every year.
Fun fact: the person who fly the plane tried to warn the group about the dog being the monster, but they didn't understand him due to him speaking Norwegian
In regards of public reusage of Carpenter's idea I kinda like "God Eater" - when anime meets The Thing meets Fallout. I always wondered where they got idea of all-devouring cells creating their own versions of what they eaten, only after The Thing I realized it was this movie except alien dominated the planet and humans adapted parts of it as a weapon.
Ah yes. The one movie that scared me out of anything back then and even now. It just made me even afraid to say goodnight to my parents. My mind would wander off saying to my self "is that person a thing?!". Truly terrifying.
Childs wrongly accuses MacReady of being a murderer, but the shooting was in self-defense, because Clark tried to stab him in the back with a scalpel. Thus, MacReady's act was not murder, but justifiable homicide. 7:13

@@Winasaurus It’s more like I could never enjoy something without any warmth in it. Like why would I? So I get fear and depression or something? It’s a fair critique. How can something be entertaining yet just be pure despair and fear fuel
Whoa.
Very very late, but I need to archive this comment because that’s brilliant.
@@ZebboGeesucks they had a comic and it expands on this question also they breath/eye thing is a give away.

@@FilthTribeFTP So then what’s your explanation of the noose?
There’s an extremely acclaimed theory about the Thing:
An advanced alien race which had already developed space travel, discovered a strange creature on a different planet, which had the ability to amalgamate and perfectly imitate any organism it consumes.
