For anyone wondering, the Shikoku Pilgrimage is actually a journey throughout Shikoku to 88 temples that span 1200 kilometers. One can go by car, motorcycle, bike, bus, or more traditionally, by foot -- it takes between 5-65 days depending on your mode of transport and speed.
It is an amazing experience and if you go by foot you get to see and meet people from a culture (and economy!) built around the pilgrimage. There are all kinds of insane sights, foods, and customs along the way. I will finish my pilgrimage tomorrow after 39 days of walking!
Congrats!! That's amazing :D :D
Wow! That's some serious dedication!
Sharla in Japan Thanks! +thank you for sharing the inaka side of the country :) shoutout to jpilgrim.com for anyone considering doing it, it saved me a few times
Nate Harris I am planning to do this in a few years. Where did you sleep? Can you sleep in the temples?
Nate Harris I would love to do this one day. 💪
Such an amazing place. Looks pretty close to perfection!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience! 💜
What a beautiful and magical looking place. Definitely a destination to put on my list of places to visit in Japan.
This lwayaji Temple is amazing and beautiful. The forest is sure beautiful! !
Sharla, thanks for showing such a beautiful place. Enjoyed it. Have fun :)
The scenery is like Princess Mononoke! So so pretty!
I've been to quite a few of the 88 temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, but I've never done the pilgrimage.
Shikoku is so lovely and I totally agree with what you said in the video.
Most people focus way too much on Tokyo and other main tourist attractions in Japan missing out all the good stuff that's out there. I always try to show the things that might be less known in my blog.
Even after living in Japan for 7 years, having travelled to all 47 prefectures more than once, there's still so much to discover. :)
These videos have been amazing!! Thanks so much for sharing! 😃
Hi Sharla! I LOVE watching your videos! They are so amazing, helpful and adventurous!
Thank you for sharing this video! :)
As always ... Sharla is amazing ... Norm and Sherry too LOL ❣️
I love these trips you take together ✨🎋⛩
I always looking forward to your videos up.
Oh this vlog really moved me. I'm planning my "one epic trip to Japan" this coming spring and watching these new videos of yours are really helping me figure out the best routes and experiences for my trip. Thank you!
This is so beautiful!! thanks for sharing it with us
I just want to say thank you for this video, Sharla. It's absolutely beautiful. Never stop asking questions ;)
it is so pretty, and feels so sacred, a must to see :) Thank you for showing it to us!
僕もいつか四国を訪れて、八十八ヵ所巡りをするのが夢なんです。
素敵な動画をありがとうございます。
This is the type of areas in Japan that I want to see. The countryside. Looks so beautiful.
Love your channel, very informative in various aspects of japan
Thanks for showing us this very beautiful side of Japan Sharla! :)
This looks like an amazing experience! Between semesters I really want to head out to the country side and have some experiences I couldn't have in the city, so thank you for this video! 💕
This is amazing! Thanks for showing us c:
I really love these kinds of rural temple videos, please do more temple videos Sharla!
I love your videos like this. You've really come a long way in your editing. Thank you so much for uploading such an experience :)
Very peaceful and soothing... until the big bells. 😃 nice.
Love the video! The forest looks so tranquil
that's the biggest worm I've ever seen!
I love these vids where we can see special parts of Japan - thanks Sharla
awesome video Sharla !! I can't wait to experience this kind of thing in Japan next year :) xx
I luv luv luv your videos! Especially ones like these.
I am scheduled to walk the Shikoku Pilgrimage this year! Great video! ~Mikio 😊
It reminds me of the countryside that Chihiro's family drives through in Spirited Away.
I have always wanted to walk the whole Shikoku Pilgrimage, it just seems so peaceful and different from many others things that people do
Love the video
I was thinking that the forest looked more like spirited away lol
yap
Unzen here in Nagasaki is the actual spirited away. It's amazing!! Actually, I think the bathhouse in spirited away was actually modeled after something in Ehime, but Nagasaki's Mt. Unzen looks just like it, and even has smoke coming up out the the ground everywhere, even from the streets and the sidewalks. Totally feels like a different dimension.

Not all,
Some are like Mononoke princess or Totoro.
This reminds me a little of Fushimi Inari! There's just something really wonderful about hiking your way up a mountain and seeing all the shrines and statues along the way... I'd love to visit Japan again for more experiences like this.
Sharla! I love your videos! They are so informative, fun and enjoyable! You've inspired me to go to Shikoku island and this place! :)
Wow, stunning!
I really enjoy your videos outside of Tokyo! Looking forward to seeing more of the Japanese countryside.
I'm loving this series so much Sharla, you're doing a fantastic job - these videos are really beautiful!
It really bothers me when people even just go to Tokyo and don't visit any shrines or temples, there is so much more to it than pop culture.
Not going to have time to visit here this time but it's going on my list for another trip!!
It's amazing! Those views of Japan nature really caught my heart. I would like to see them when I visit Japan. I hope I could get there someday. :) I'm waiting for more videos like that! Thank you for making them! :)
if I ever win a trip to Japan, I will be sure to visit the temple.
one of your best vlogs. Thanks :)
All the history! Nailed it!
I think it is an interesting and great thing to experience a country as a tourist and through the eyes of a local. If I were to ever go to Japan, that's what I'd do. Lovely vlog. Thanks for sharing it.😊
Thank you so so much for this video Sharla! Been following your vids for a few years now and this is the kind of Japan I imagined! Just like Studio Ghibli's imagination! Love it! When I finally get to come to Japan I will come here! Now I know where it is :D :D Thanks again! xx (a follower from Wales UK X) xx
Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage | Iwayaji Temple #45
Класс!!! Дружба на всегда!
i want to gooooo :O thanks for showing me such a new and interesting side to Japan!
The most beautiful place💜
I love to see these more traditional parts of Japan, I'd like to see places like these for myself once!
Hello Sharla I love your videos! im a big fan of you. 😝💗
Omg 100 times! I'm pretty sure I would manage to fall down before I get to 10 lol. Love the place! It reminds me of how beautiful Inari is and how I suffered to get to the top. Thanks for sharing Sharla!
This video reminded me its been 10 years since I was in Japan :( Need to go back.
I am reading a book about the 88 temple Pilgrimage , in one part it says about this temple 山海岸 , it is how amazing I can see the actual place , thanks for posting the video .
Very beautiful Place, thanks for the Video and again, a Vending Machine :D
Hello! Random, but your"Totoro' scene really reminded me of this amazing place in Mie prefecture. It was called Akame 48 waterfalls. It was stunning. It's a bit out of the way, but not too difficult to get to from Kyoto. It could easily be done as a half-day trip. I think that seeing things like that was more rewarding and interesting than seeing the oh-so-popular sites of Tokyo, or even Kyoto for that matter.
It's so wonderful to walk all 88 temples. I'll finish 2nd round next year by partial walk every year since 2010. See you there at the walking route.
So pretty and cool! The red bridge reminded me of Haku from Spirited Away :-)
I did went with my mom on a big trip on Japan for 12 days!! It was awesome and from Tokyo to all the way down to Shikoku 😍😍.. my mom like it and enjoy it a lot, I loved the country side part of Japan. I was a really fun and I learn a lot too. My tour guide was awesome and show us some cool places, I will defiantly go back to Japan.
going to japan for the first time in feb...excited to find your channel!
this is just amazing and so educational I loved this and learned
It looks like such a beautiful place to visit
Such a beautiful vlog :)
Thanks for making videos like this! It reminds me that there's a lot of Japan to enjoy and explore outside of city "walls."
Also thank you for always bringing content that we don't usually see RUclipsrs do! Hopefully we'll be able to cross paths in Japan someday. :) いつもありがとうございます!これからの動画を楽しみにしています〜
If I ever go to Japan this is the type of place I'd love to experience. Since I'm not sure that will happen, I'm glad I get to live vicariously through you! Thanks for sharing your trip!
loved it!!
I feel like going to temples were no one else goes is always nice. Of course the famous ones aren't famous for nothing, but sometimes the secluded ones are the most fun.
When I was living in Kyoto we went to a temple in tanukidani, which is still part of Kyoto but like in the middle of nowhere. And we hiked up the mountain to it and there was only one other person and it was such an amazing experience. (Also there is a shrine for the toilet god トイレの神 which was just hilarious)
Thanks for showing us Ehime... I want to go there once myself, but until then your videos will do :P
Stunning!
Wow that Place Looks sooo Stunning
thank you for this video :-) im studying in hiroshima next year, and am so happy this is nearby
Hi Sharla
Great vlog! Ive just come back from Japan & I wish i did this! Im missing Japan!
wow.. I always want that kind of experience...
Wow sharla! Your experience in this temple is really great!
Hope Japan is doing well.
From, Spiralixx
Wonderful!
beautiful!
7:42 really loved the way he moved the camera, it ACTUALLY caught on camera the size of those trees. That's usually quiet difficult to do.
Hi Sharla, my name is Malissa I live in Wellington nz and I really enjoyed watching all of your videos.
The locations are amazingly fantastic and to understand more about Japanese culture I love it.
Some day I'll travel to Japan.
The video started and ending with the same song, I like that, gives a feeling of closer
Dawn girl, stop posting videos of amazing places of Japan, I can't go everywhere in my next trip D;
Now seriously, it's great to get to know new places like this and learn new things about Japanese culture through your videos, and never stop making questions!!
Hector sakamoto
Loved the vid!
great video really enjoyed the content
on one hand i'm so thankful to see all these beautiful places in videos
but on the other hand my list of places to visit in japan does not end- it's so hard to choose ;/
but thank you very much for sharing, this is exactly what i want to see when i finally get there
life goals: travell to Japan as often as possible
I'm going to Japan for 3 weeks next year spending 1 week in Tokyo and the rest traveling round Kyoto tsumago Mt koya and other places and I'm looking forward to travelling a lot. It's my first time and I hope I can visit again!
this is the kind of Japan that I like and fell in love with and I am so happy that sharla can make these videos ^_^ keep up the great work
That ruled! I like it! I like it!
Japan is so beautiful!
Good strategy! "Ask questions (to make what you see more interesting and learnable)!"
とっても可愛いです。これからも楽しい動画出してください!応援してます📣
+Sharla In Japan
Thanks for doing these videos showing more of the traditional and historic attractions in Japan. Please make more if you can. Hundreds of channels focus on Tokyo and cool things to see and do there, which is fun too, but a lot of us who have yet to visit Japan really want to see and learn more about things like this, not just Tokyo.
I also agree with your friend that it's great that you ask questions and are curious. I think that is so important. Sadly a lot of people don't dare to do this, many because they are shy or scared of being seen as uninformed or uneducated, but that is just silly. Asking questions is how you STOP bing uninformed and uneducated. Maybe it's just an attitude my mother instilled in me because she was a teacher, but I have always been asking questions when I don't understand or find something interesting. IF (and that is in fact rare) you don't get a very good answer or someone gives the impression they find you stupid for asking, well that says way more about that person than it does about you, because at least you are trying to learn.
Sorry for the long comment. Keep up the good work!
Lots of love from Norway :)

I just found your channel yesterday and I Love it!
Welcome to my channel~ :D
so great video awesome a love you so beautiful place
Awesome video
lovely video
Aah, the nature looks so pretty! Everything's so green ;O; We already have full autumn almost winter going on, everything's so dark, wet and cold ;_;
Hey Sharla I just wanna thank you for introducing this side of Japan to us. I agree with Norm, the reason why I love your vlogs and videos so much is because unlike other channels, you're always very informative about everything, in a positive manner. Do you know now facebook can take your panorama photos and wrap it as a 360 image, without having an actual 360 camera? Try it!!
it's so pretty there 😻
So pretty! Thanks for showing us the countryside...that would so be more my vibe, but I don't know the geography of Japan enough to know where to go...now at least I know one place. :)
This pilgrimage is number one on my bucket list. It's the major reason I love Japan and with to live there. After doing fire watch in Alberta next year I'll be doing this in the fall.
beautiful
お遍路さんのコスチュームもシャーラが着るとスタイリッシュでかっこいい!
