I've been saving £35 a month since last Xmas, so nearly £400 to pay for presents and a couple of meals and and some extra food. Usually put it all on a credit card and pay it off over the year. Not this year :)

I am grateful that I am not from a gift-giving (ie, gift-expecting) family, nor do we celebrate Christmas (which helps a LOT from a spending standpoint). Still, here in NYC the decorations went up right after Halloween and it's hard to ignore the holiday and easy to get swept up in the buying frenzy. Luckily I don't have to travel since my family is mostly nearby: Thanksgiving was just a few miles away. My biggest recommendation when it comes to the holidays: keep it about the people and not the stuff, which, let's face it, almost nobody ever really needs. Fun video as always, Austin -- looking forward to more creative holiday content!

I use my budget binder to save for my baby cousins throughout the year. I have no children and since I am an only child, I have no nieces or nephews. I tell my cousins to just put the money in a savings account for the children's future or education.
I also never want anything for the holidays. My father died on Christmas so I like to spend the day being Peaceful. Throughout the years, I have wanted less and less material things. I am grateful for what I have. I am grateful that I have a roof over my head and money coming in from my job and other projects. I look around and know that my life could be worse but I have the ability to change it for the better. The holidays are wonderful for celebrating and creating memories with a spirit of gratitude

Thanks Austin for another helpful video. I agree with everything you said except with getting a permit to cut down a real tree. I used to always have a real tree, however, in more recent years I have reconsidered and now use an artificial tree that I got for $10 at the thrift store. I agree 100% that real trees smell nicer (I mean, artificial tress don’t smell at all😂), however, considering the environmental disaster that is currently our planet I can no longer justify cutting down any tree, not even farmed ones. Our planet needs trees for all kinds of reasons. They absorb carbon dioxide (48 lbs per year per tree), they prevent soil erosion, they provide habitat for birds and other animals, etc. I don’t think buying a new artificial tree is responsible either as the resources used to manufacture and transport them are not justifiable in my mind. So for me, the only way to still participate in the festivities is to have a new to me artificial tree. Happy holidays to you and your family.

This is followed by a potluck dinner so the host doesn't need to shoulder the food expenses. Heck we dont even let the host cook, given that they volunteered their home and we make sure we help up with the dishes and the cleaning afterwards. A party well spent full of fun without costing a fortune! Now that's a merry Christmas 🎄

My brother came out to visit and we've been splitting the spending on eating out and we've done some things like order a pre-packed Thanksgiving family meal, so that we can spend less time cooking and more time enjoying the holiday. I also got a couple of minor gifts for my family, but I did splurge a bit more on myself than I normally would. The good news is that I've saved a bit of money and I'm planning on making sure I stay out of debt this holiday season.

Also you have to give minimum $10 to each of the two owners so that they can purchase a gift for each of them that they intern can give to charity. Quite frankly, I don’t want to partake in any of this , any money that I have. I prefer to either spend on my grandchildren or not spend it all, but I don’t know how to get out of this without coming across as a cheapskate. Help!

I've had the same decorations since 2003, when I got my first house. I bought some stuff here and there, but nothing since 2007. I would never buy something with the purpose of throwing it away, just cause it was "cheap". That is the thing I see and hear the most from fiends, family and neighbors, they throw perfectly working items just cause they were $10.00 or less. As I tell them when they look down on me because I still have an iPod that I run with.... My iPod cost me $300.00, that was a full days worth of work, to get the one item. I respect myself too much to throw away my labor, or the fruits of my labor if you will.
Regarding gift giving, I keep it super simple. If you don't go to church at least 12 times a year, you don't get a Christmas present, because in my eyes, you are not a practicing Christian. I tell my friends and family that religion is not a buffet table where you get to pick what you get to participate in and what you want to sit out.

I disagree with your first suggestion; it is not sustainable neither convenient; it is better if we use plastics christmas tree. They last a lifetime. Real trees once you cut them take 10 years to grow. Real trees once you cut them and take them
Inside your home from 0 degrees to +20 degrees Celsius loose all their leafs. Then after Christmas is over you have also to take them to the garbage center. You always give very wise suggestions but this first is a totally CONSUMERISTIC Advice!

Giving culture is toxic over there. Oh my. I remember being unable to buy basic groceries without being solicited at the supermarket's entrance. 😬
Same with restaurants asking for tips. It's like you don't have enough taxes to collect money to help the poor over there, already.
