Hi, great video! How do you personally apply the polyurethane to the railing? I am planning to do this same thing to my railing except I will paint the ballisters and risers white.
I am wondering also if I should use the floor poly on the railing as well so everything matches?
Lastly, on the treads, would you only go up to 60 grit as well? I have oak treads that I just removed the carpet from.
Thanks!
Thanks Jeff. I used a brush to apply 5 coats of Fabulon to rails. Thinner coats are better. You could also use lint free roller.
Treads can orbital sand to 60 or 80. But I screen sand to 180 or 220 between coats of poly. Will be smooth as glass.
Yes same poly I used on floor.
@@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 Thank you!
Hello sir, thank you for this video
You said 3M has contour stripping pads. How do you attach this to the hand sander will you also please send me a link to the product and the product name?
Hi its not attached to anything, its used to strip finish off irregular shapes, its sold two per package.
The Home Depot SKU# is # 1002341337
How do you effectively strip and sand the turned parts?
For the turned parts I used the wire brush, stripper pads, and sandpaper.
I'm not sure I understand why you need to use the chemical stripper if you're going to sand it anyway.
Stripper applied to lathe turned parts makes it easier to remove finish with wire brush.
@@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 Ok. I'm getting ready to re-stain the stair banister and I was just going to sand with 180 grit then 220 grit, pre-condition, stain, then polycrylic. But now I'm wondering if the stripper is a necessary step that I shouldn't be skipping.
@@_Moto215 a wire brush and sandpaper should be fine
