Who remembers the magic of a PlayStation Demo Disc? I do. But I equally remember the magic - or more accurately, strangeness - of the Official UK PlayStation Magazine, which is where the PS1 demo discs and even PS2 demo discs came from in the first place if you lived in the UK. There was a US edition, plenty of spin offs and unofficial magazines, and even alternatives for other consoles like Nintendo Power, but this isn’t them, and you aren’t watching AVGN. Angry Video Game Nerd, sorry. Reading a PS1 magazine or a PS2 magazine was like reading your favourite book, if somebody kept on updating it because of new information. This magazine not only hid all of the classic PS1 demo discs that I talked about in my demo disc review video, but ended up becoming the best selling gaming magazine IN THE WORLD by 1999 after featuring a Metal Gear Solid review and Metal Gear Solid demo. The success never reached those levels again, but the magazine itself is still going today and managed to survive through the dawn of the internet, eventually ending up into the Official PS3 Magazine and nowadays the Official PS4 Magazine. I’m saying ‘official’ a lot because I think it’s important to stress that this wasn’t a third party magazine - it was Sony licensed, and as the magazine transitioned from PS1 to PS2, I’m surprised it was still Sony approved. Like any time a franchise or product reaches its highest sales volumes ever, this also means sales eventually do drop - and when this happens, to try to recreate initial high sales volumes in the early years, sometimes you end up completely losing it and forgetting what made you so successful in the first place. I bring this up due to what ends up happening to the Official PlayStation magazine - form the PS1 to PS2, it slowly became an adult-oriented and sleazy magazine for lads in a desperate attempt to reinvigorate the hardcore fans and bring in more casual people than ever. You won’t believe what you see towards the end of this video, and won’t believe this was an official publication from the heads of PlayStation themselves. Hotlines galore, inappropriate comments, weird articles, gross pictures, it’s got it all. Get ready for my longest video yet, grab your popcorn, and let’s look at these pages with our mouths gaping open together. Rate Your Mate, indeed. Welcome to the Caddicarus PlayStation magazine review, featuring Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima, Abe’s Odyssey, Abe’s Exoddus, Jak and Daxter, Heart of Darkness, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Enter the Matrix, Rascal, Tekken, and plenty of really old Nokia mobile phone ads for Java games and ringtones of early 2000’s hits.

What I find fascinating is an argument is often "you can't criticise sexism in the past, as it was just a sign of the times, you can't criticise something in the past by today's standards".
But, literally, the editors acknowledged that pandering to that audience isn't relevant to a magazine about a video console. They had a set of standards... Then went back on those standards they had set themselves to.
I wouldn't say you can't criticise things in the past, just that there's not much point to doing so after a certain point.
There was a negative reaction to the questionable content at the time, which was enough for them to change their minds, but if they hadn't, criticising them decades later wouldn't change their minds or any body else's now. If you want to express moral outrage, it might as well be for something relevant which people are still forming opinions about.
Everything worth criticising so far has happened in the past. Since there's too much bad stuff in the world for anyone to care about all of it, it doesn't make sense to complain too much about old news except for the sake of nostalgia like this video does.
that "past sexism" argument sounds like it'd only be made by people who wished they were in the time period they were defending...for all the wrong reasons...
I kind of agree, something in the past should be judged by the standards of that time. But since they obviously had standards better than that, so can’t say it about them.
@@SineN0mine3 Very true. It's not worth being angry at stuff you cannot change because it has already happened. You can only think about the present.
Later that day, the head of Sony called either the head of Nintendo or Masahiro Sakurai and asked "Why did King Dedede send us a form asking us for a copy of Cash Banooca 2 Gringott's Steak House?"

Not to put too fine a point on it, but around the time the UK PlayStation magazine lost it's goddamn mind and became the print equivalent of every pervert character in every anime ever, the American equivalent, from what I remember, was still just a straight forward PlayStation magazine. Yes... the AMERICAN magazine was more subtle and respectful than it's UK counterpart.
Even as an American... this seems backwards... what even is reality anymore?
As an American, its probably that you probably don't realise just how vulgar and tasteless British Humour can get.
Not meant condescendingly, but when people from the States talk about British humour, it seems they mostly see the witty sarcasm of Blackadder, rather than the crass garbage like the Keith Lemon movie.
Well, they're able to get away with more stuff being shown in media in britain, and it seems that they thought that they were trying to appeal to their audience in the worst possible way.
Irony much?

The UK has always had a lot more saucy humor and also magazines.
If you ever get the chance look up the sun. If I remember correctly they had something called the three-page rule where basically every three pages they had a nude woman

The Sun stopped do Page 3 in 2015, but when the PS2 magazines were being published there were 3 or 4 newspapers that had naked women in every issue.

Now I know why.
ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT
Same for a channel in Latin America called Animax, it started as a 100% anime channel, later adding some video game commentary, which was ok. Then added more and more live action and reality tv and game shows because according to Sony "nobody watches anime all day".

Thanks Ben
"Hey man, you're cool," a commenter remarked.
I love reading old gaming magazines.
Like when they talked about how excited everyone was for Silent Hills.
I'm not crying, you're crying.
Well, if Chris Pratt can play Mario, Brad Pitt as crash bandicoot is plausible
"WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!"
[AVGN flashbacks ensue.]

Funnily enough, my Gran literally did own a Playstation. Crash Bandicoot was her favourite series
Your gran is the coolest person ever
I wish my Gran was like that...
One of my grandmas (yeah, I got two) owned a PlayStation 2, and I remember playing it at her house a lot.
She had some games I could play, from PS1 games to PS2 games to even a couple demo discs! I remember this one demo disc, lemme reminisce for a moment. It had this sorta factory theme, where the intro FMV showed the demo disc being made, set to this industrial, booming yet bouncy music. I don't remember much about it, but I do remember a couple of the games on that demo disc:
Bust-a-Move 4, Abe's Exoddus, and... no wait, actually, that's it. Anyways, uh, what were we talking about?
mine loved final fantasy and zelda
Im so happy for your grandma

Oh God! I know the early to mid 2000's where embarrassing but that stuff made me genuinely uncomfortable. I can't imagine how it felt for girls reading the magazines at the time. I stopped reading PSM after the PS1 so I don't know if the same thing happened to the Swedish branch that I grew up with, but I certainly hope it didn't.
I wonder if its how modern day feminism in the video gaming industry came to be? XD
@@BlazeHeartPanther I don't think the industry needed PSM's help to be perceived as a dudebro club but they sure as hell didn't make us look any better.
The 2000's was a wierd decade
They were not the target audience.....that simple.

Urgh, God, when you showed some of the horrible crap that were in those particular Playstation magazines... I think I suffered psychological damage.

The question "why are you licking component cables?" will probably never be asked again in human history.
I still have all of those magazines and wierdest time was when they included 4 full pages of nude images and web links for hentai and saying those are links only for people getting all A in school. It is damn gaming magazine.
why does it say ......oh no for the thumbnail now

wow, this a really interesting video! I'm glad you made it, it's really cool looking at stuff like this from the past and the culture it was made in- heck, I wasn't even alive or able to play video games for most of the time these magazines were made, and it's really interesting listening to you talk about them in such depth
