i know youtubers don't watch other youtuber content but cgdive already covered this a long time ago.
For anyone who want to gu further in their rigging journey pierrick picaut and cgdive are the other 2 major tutorial channel talking about rigging in blender.
Yep they are legends!
There's also antCGi youtube channel, he has great rigging input. It's in Maya, but the principles he teaches reach to very advanced rigging.
100% true, i follow them both as well as many others. There are more gems in youtube which have a solid understanding of Rigging and have very good videos about the subject
and for your reward of watching the video one minute after posting: 360p resolution
Haha give it ten minutes :)
the legend himself returns! always great tutorials thank you mate
Trying to increase the content frequencies! I think I have about 12 hours of videos to edit
Your videos are always a highlight to me. Even though I'm at home in Cinema 4D I learned so much from you.
Excited for your next videos! Cheers from Germany!
Thanks for watching mate!
really fun to watch, i don't use blender but i like to watch your videos! Good job bro!
Thanks for the support!
Hey Dikko, amazing video, as always :D. My fear with Blender books in general is that Blender updates so fast that the books maybe outdated in a fell months; that being said, this book looks like an amazing book.
I have a question: Blender will change from bone layers to bone collections in 4.0, this will probably impact rigging and maybe animation, do you have any plans to make a new rigging/animation serie or a video explaining the changes?
Kuddos from Brazil :D.
Regarding your first concern, while it’s true that Blender does tend to update quite rapidly, it’s rigging suite tends to remain the same on a fundamental level, so the information in the book should hold up for some time especially in the context of game engine rigging.
As for your question, yes I do have plans for an updated rigging series!
I'm currently using 4.1 alpha (building from source) and going through a rigging course based on a version of Blender from several years ago (2019 or earlier, The Art of Effective Rigging). Bone collections replacing bone layers does not make the important parts of the rigging course obsolete. You'll just need to make some adjustments to your workflow but nothing major.
Is there a tutorial for that character you used? Like modelling and texturing? It's absolutely sick!!
Nah no tutorial for this dude, though there is a bunch of old livestreams of me making him
holy hells, this would be amazing for me, as I specifically value blender for its toony bendy bones. Is there any way to get it working with handles still? like the usual absolute handles to do bends by hand posing? It's my preferred method and knowing that would let me feel comfortable with making game exportable rigs.
Yeah you definitely can do that! All you gotta do is split the single bendy bone into two, then have a handle bone as a child of the ik, then make the stretch-to constraint of the bendy bone go to the handle bone.
Other software packages can't immediately do bendy bones, but that is not to say a similar function can't be made in other software. I understand your statement, but it's slightly misleading.
Spline IK or NURB Ribbons in maya, for example, can give a similar result.
Blender can do spline Ik as well, but only Blender can take one bone and dynamically and non destructively subdivide itself higher and lower without any plugins or scripting. It also automates the twist functionality in just a couple clicks which Maya can’t do without some script to automate the process
would you recommend this book, if I already have bought the "the Art of effective rigging in Blender" course by Pierrick Picaut?
There’s nothing wrong with multiple sources of knowledge :). Both are fantastic
Im struggling in rigging i will give that book a try
The moment I saw that thumbnail I knew I needed to see that character doing some sort of MC Hammer dance.
Here's hoping cuz I'm not gonna do it. (Well maybe someday...)
Maybe I can do it :p
Love the face reveal and great content as always!
Really interesting. I've never heard of anyone using that method before. Never knew it was possible.
Same here!
this guy is the Stevie Wonder of blender
I damn near had a heart attack after clicking the link and seeing $230, because i didn't realize it's dollarydoos LOL. Anyway sorry if this is said in the video but is this book just for beginners or does it delve into more advanced stuff, like specific weight painting techniques or non-human rigs?
Haha sorry about that! The book is like 60 bucks American I think. It definitely delves into advanced information that you’re looking into. As for non human rigs, it focuses primarily on humanoid stuff, but honestly you could easily translate the information to non human rigs
@@Dikko Alright i'm in, sucks it's not on apple books tho. Thanks for showcasing it for us!
Amazing knowledge. 😮
Love your work man. Really. Keep it going please. Your talent and teachings are very valuable to me ❤
I’ll keep going as long as I can :)
one of the problems I had before is when I rigged a fps arms model in blender then exported as skeletal mesh to unreal engine with some animations , So when I used these bones in UE for some programmable stuff like precaudal animation or controlling ik by code , i got stuck !! it was really hard to use code beside of baked animation on the same rig!!
can't wait for your new hot ass video, You're the wizard bro
Thanks dude!
hey Dikko thanks a lot, i have a simple question, is it easy to switch from rigging in maya to rigging in blender?
The fundamentals are the same. Personally I find blenders armature system much more forgiving when it comes to fixing mistakes
this was helpful, i can finally switch to blender now without fear of learning rigging from zero in blender, thanks for your assistance.@@Dikko
Thinking about switching to blender now ;), btw of did you make those "lines" effects on the character at the beginning ?
There’s a feature in Blender called the grease pencil which it’s 2D animation component. But because it’s Blender, you can also add a modifier to a grease pencil object which traces 3D objects and then also displace the lines
thanks a lot!!@@Dikko
Does the book cover any "industry standard" plugins like Rigify or AutoRigPro? I put industry standard in quotes, because maybe the standard is actually to do this from scratch. But I doubt it.
No, just vanilla blender.
This is awesome for exported baked animations, i wish there was a way to make this bendy bone functionality be usable in a setup like for example using ik and procedural animation in Unity (not pre-baked animation).. I wonder if the book tackles that part of it too, would be cool to learn
It would work with unity’s IK system because the main arm bones (the parents of all the little bones) also carry over in the export, which in turn you would use to drive the unity IK system
@@Dikko ok the way I understood it was that the bone segments copy the bendy bones, and if the bendy bones didn't export to unity you would lose that functionality?
@@Dikko I'm specifically interested in achieving that squash and stretch functionality in Unity. I've tried some bodgey experiments but this approach seems promising
Definitely adding this book on my "to read" list.
Doesn't blender still have free tutorials on their website? Why would I buy a book?
You buy the book if you're really serious about rigging in blender. Like you have been using blender for a month or so.
I got the book and I got to the part where it taught me where to place the bones.
Those are great as well but you’re rigging for games you need to follow some pretty specific paradigms
Those are great as well but you’re rigging for games you need to follow some pretty specific paradigms.
Can i use this method for film making also ?
Absolutely! I’m definitely going to
it would be super cool if you made a short version of this video.
I’d probably do a simpler, more direct video once I work on a new rigging series. 4.0 is around the corner so that is when I plan on doing a new one
Dikko out here looking like a Rock Star, damn!
Haha cheers mate!
😮unbelievable… guess I’ve got to add to cart before it runs out of stock
It seems to be doing pretty well on the Amazon charts for its category!
Honestly the 180 flip being due to quartanions is something i didn't know
Yeah I have a solution for that which I hope to discuss in future videos
Do you have cats?
2 cats! 🐈🐈⬛
Does it cover skinning? Skinning is the most boring task I have ever accomplished... Even more annoying than retopo.
Yes!
This man really wearing sunglasses in doors... You don't have to try to look cool bro.. You're already very cool. lol Thanks for the video tho!
My guy really called maya MEYA 💀
Bro thinks he's Des Rocs
Great tootorial tho
