Excellent video!! Lots of fun!! Makes me want to visit, but with travelers like you!! And I enjoyed the closeups of your face, you can see you were enjoying the trip and you were giving honest opinions and observations!!
Thanks so much! Yeah it was a lot of fun, mainly due to who we were with. The train was a non stop party, everyone was drinking and having a good time, including all the Chinese and Koreans on the train. Everyone was just really open and friendly which was great.
Great Video! I love the way you are constantly applying critical thinking to everything and not trying to sugar coat everything like other NK RUclips videos.
Thanks a lot Donald! Glad you like it, I have playing around with the style for a little while but I'm still trying to perfect the formula, I want to present the experience first and foremost, with intelligent commentary/witty comments, and leave out opinion. Hopefully it will provide something a little different to what is already on the platform.
Thank you for this - very interesting to watch! I am surprised that the DPRK hasn't smartened up everything along that train route especially if foreigners are using to visit.
Your entry was different to ours (we went in September), we took the same train to Beijing to Dandong but cleared Chinese customs upstairs in Dandong train station and then crossed the Yalu on a North Korean train that took us to Pyongyang. The train stopped in Sinuiji for the North Korean entry stuff which was much easier than I was expecting.
Paul Eagles interesting, at the time I thought it was a train over the river too, maybe the bridge wasn’t available/built/working, certainly makes it easier if you don’t have to get on and off a coach. So I guess the customs was all taken care of on the train in Sinuiju, you didn’t have to get off?
Having looked again your train from Beijing was different. Our train had Dandong as the destination as the departure board and was a Chinese train. Was yours an NK train? After crossing the bridge we stopped in Sinuiji for a couple of hours. NK officials came on the train, looked through our luggage (it was no more than a cursory glance really) and then went off with our passports, NK tourist visas and entry cards. They came back about an hour later and gave passports back. At that point we could get off the train and buy refreshments (I really like that NK beer, the number 2 especially!) but we didn't have to get off.
Actually I never thought of that, it was 2 different trains plus a coach, I just assumed that was the only service to Pyongyang from Beijing and that’s how they put it up on the boards. You went over the same bridge though? Was it old or new? For some reason I think they have built another bridge there recently...
Do you remember roughly what time you departed Beijing? We were on train K27 that left Beijing at 17:27. Yeah, we went over the same bridge, the one parallel to the bridge that got bombed during the Korean war. There is another bridge, south (I think) of Dandong but although the bridge has been completed the train track stopped dead on the NK side. I suppose there's different ways of getting into NK but your video is the first time I've seen it done that way.
I think they must have just changed up the entry procedure, we were also on train K27 at 17:27, the depature board is correct... you're saying you didn't even change carriage? it was definately 2 different locomotives and 2 different carriages for us, though seemingly advertised one single service from Beijing.
This was great, thank you. First video of your I've seen. Just one criticism: several times it was hard to hear what you were saying because the background music was so loud. Maybe just my speakers - but it's not an issue with other people's vids!

Of course people start to move when the train arrives, have you ever been to a train station? it's what people do. They wait for people arriving, they wait because they are about to take that train, etc. Why else do you think they would be on a train platform? visiting? walking around for fun?
That was sarcasm... what I'm saying is that people on the train platform are all waiting for the train so of course when it arrives they seem to "come to life". That's just what people do. Everywhere. Including you.
I don't agree - train stations are usually more transient places which exhibit a more regular flow of traffic, rather than an 'on or off' scenario. People generally aren't waiting for a train to arrive inside the concourse, rather outside in cars or not at all. Not sure how many trains arrive per day at Pyongyang station, but it is not that many. In any case, this is just a tiny observation and not a key take away from the story. It is strange that you have focused on it.
Really? you find it strange that I focus on your preposterous statement suggesting that everyone on the train platform is an actor paid to look busy for your viewing pleasure ? and maybe there is PSA right before the trains arrives "20 seconds left, please get really to look busy or soldiers will take you away and shoot you..... 10 seconds.....5, 4, 3, 2, 1 aaaand action!". Hey, maybe I'm an actor from NK trying to make you doubt what you saw, who knows... or maybe I'm CIA and I'm paid to make you think I'm an NK agent ahah.... I'll admit though, I don't know what "concourse" means, english is not my native tongue. How many railways are there?
It's not really preposterous, just matter of fact. once the train arrives, everyone comes to life. I was there. I saw it. You're not making me doubt anything. I even say 'I'm not saying these people are actors'. If you don't know what concourse means then you should stray clear from words like preposterous.I'm happy to keep language simple to have an honest conversation.
