• 5 Things I Never Knew ...
Hi here, Stefan from the future. Again great video! After having tested surströmming now I can assure you the taste is quite a bit stronger than anchovies or sardines... would love to see your reactions though 😜
👍👍
Don't say it's rotten, fermentation is done to prevent food from become rotten, used world wide before anyone had a fridge...the modern day fridge is also a Swedish invention.
If you want to eat surströmming it is wise to open the can under water and that removes a bit of the smell
From an acctual Swede: You are a VERY brave and suicidal man. I would NEVER even concider eating that disgusting food xD
I´m from southern part of Sweden, and i love surströmming very salty tho.
Oh... Surströmming. 🙄 When people try it on RUclips and just eat it straight out of the can. It is not supposed to be eaten as a whole piece out of the can. Chop it up and put it on thin bread with pieces of boiled potato, raw chopped onion and (if you care for it) some creme fraiche.
So is the issue that it's too fishy, too salty, or too fermented when you take too big of a bite?
Rule "not open in side"
@@Ann-louise74 Jag behöver inte äta det igen, men det är inte äckligt så....
So basically slightly stronger than Durian?
@@ReactToTheWorld Yes, a strong, salty flavour. But since I grew up eating it at festive occations I have never had a problem with the smell. My brother's wife (who is from the south of Sweden) can't stand it though. 😁 I think a good example would be if you found the brittish chef Jamie Oliver when he tried it. He did everything right (🙄 though the toppings on the bread can be argued).
Actually the reason i think you react in a bad way towards the ketchup on pasta is because the ketchup in US is so much sweeter in the teste than in Sweden. The ketchup in Sweden has a little more of a bitter taste and goes well with the flavors from the pasta.
Tomato always need a bit of sugar, if you make tomato soup and don't put any sugar in it (even italians to this) it's gonna taste crap. So ketchup is basiclly extra sweet tomato pure. And yes Sweds are the kings of using ketchup on stuff.
50/50 Heinz ketchup and mayo works with everything :D
Yes to ketchup on pasta!
You'r right!
The best
ALWAYS
Naaah, Butter and Aromat!
Surströmming is one of the worst smells in the world. It is EXTREMELY strong and pungent. The correct way to even open the can is under water in a bucket, 10 or more meters away from your house. The smell is so strong it will linger for weeks or months outside, and might never go away completely if opened inside. You guys should look up that one video of the american who opened a can INSIDE his car. It was the best shit ever LOL That's one hilarious way to completely render a car unusable.
As for the taste, it's not bad. It's nowhere near as bad as it smells. It's kind of a fishy salty taste that goes well with onions and potato, it's not an overbearing taste.
OMG. laughing so hard over this 😅

Could you please to The Mamas - Move - Sweden 🇸🇪 - Official Video - Eurovision 2020, it´s the Swedish entry to Eurovision this year! It would be fun to hear your opinions!
Brännboll is not the Swedish version of baseball. Brännboll is not a sport, it's a picnic activity
Thank you! Would never call it a real sport
You should react to the swedish melodifestivalen🙂
elin hovah YYEEEEES!!
YAS you need to!
Clothing manufacturer Gant is a bit interesting. The company was founded in Conneticut in 1949. In 1981 they gave Swedish "Pyramid Sportswear" the rights to design and market Gant outside USA. After some turbulence Pyramid bought Gant in 2001 but just 7 years later it in turn was bought by Swiss "Maus Frères" but it remains as a separate subsidiary. The headquarters of Gant is in Stockholm.
Yes, you get 480 days paid paternity leave to split with your partner, except for 90 days each, that is yours, no matter what. That is so that the father can be home with his child with the same amount of payment as the mother. Another differense between Sweden and America, is that you are not allowed to drop your child of at daycare or anything like that until the child is 1 year old. So the parents have to stay home for atleast one year with their child.
And hey, brännboll is NOT lame! It´s funny as s**t. Especially after a trip to systembolaget.
surströmming is called fermented baltic herring in English and you can get it online at www.surstromming.com/. smells bad so be outside when opening the can, but tastes great. eat it on Swedish crispbread and with fresh potatoes, chopped chive, chopped red onion and sour cream.
Ikea sells Swedish rye crispbread. don't plan important meetings right after eating it but the next day you don't smell anymore.
I always get surprised when people get confused about ketchup on pasta. I have seen many Americans do that. Pasta can be very dry and ketchup and flavor. It is not weird at all but rather brilliant.
Surströmming is simply fermented fish. And sure it smells really, really bad if youbdonit wrong. But if you open the can under water and rinse it in flowing water you get a good result with next to no smell. Then you eat itnon they traditional flat bread with potatoe cut in fine cubes and fine chopped raw onion and its actually quite delicious. Of course you should not forget a teaditional bitter flavoured schnapps to it as well.
Hi 👋🏼 I have a little more information about the paid paternity leave, is for 480 days plus that you can save your days up to and including the day the child turns 12 years old or when the child finishes form/grade 5 in compulsory school.
The non-pregnant parent our other family member can receive compensation for 10 days of leave in connection with the birth of the child. These days shall provide the opportunity to be at the delivery, get to know the child and to help the mother.
We also have Care of a sick child (vab) is when you stay home from work or cannot receive unemployment benefit to take care of a sick child. The compensation you receive when caring for a sick child is called temporary parental benefit. from the day when the child is 8 months old up until the day before the child turns 12.
Stay safe 🇸🇪
Our version of baseboll is simply for entertainment. Last midsummer we played with the elderly, kids and a dude in a wheelchair had a go. We drank and had fun. It's not exactly a sport as it is a game.
"if you like durian babe, I don't think this will be any problem whatsoever"... Famous last words!
:D :D :D

So just to clear things up. You can’t buy alcohol in any “normal” store in Sweden, systembolaget is the only store you can buy alcohol in and.. the government is running it. You can just buy ”light” alcohol in a normal store. Like 2% alcohol, beer or cider. But all the other alcohol you need to buy at systembolaget. (Often called bolaget) xx
Mikael E ah sorry, missed 1,5% there 😅😂xx
Durian smells bad, surströmming smells worse XD
Though as said in many comments, doesn't taste nearly as bad as the smell. Buuut you pretty much have it just to hide the taste of it with the other toppings ;P
Typical swedish foods:
Reindeer and elk meat.
Pickled herring which I actually like (muuuch different from fermented herring/surströmming).
The swedish ordinary way of making pancakes, usually with jam such as strawberry or raspberry or ovenbaked pancake.
Differently prepared salmon, though to be fair, ovenbaked, fried or boiled are the only good ones in my opinion (or of course as sushi, but that's not really swedish now is it).
Pyttipanna (don't know if, but they should, have it in IKEA) which is diced boiled potato and diced beef with some onion. Often with diced ham or sausage as well and usually served with beetroot and eggs.
Palt which is kind of like steamed bun dumplings but much bigger and with the dough made of potato, served with lingonberries and butter.
Falukorv (Falusausages?), often served with macaroni or sliced and cooked with creamy tomato sauce to make Korv Stroganoff which is served with rice.
Black pudding, served with lingonberry jam and bacon.
Last for my list is Flygande Jacob (Flying Jacob) which is a casserole with chicken, cream, chili sauce, banana and peanuts. Most have bacon (I usually don't) and I hate bananas so I skip those but it's easily one of my top 5 foods. Not typical swedish ingredients but still a swedish dish :P
I don't think there's any airline company that allows surströmming shipments anymore.
Come to the north of Sweden in autumn instead (thats when you eat it) and eat it in the correct way. 🐟🥔
No, bandy is a sport that have world champions with Russia, Finland and others.
You should react to some of the contributions from the Swedish Melodifestivalen 2020. For example: Dotter - Bulletproff, Anna Bergendal - Kingdom Come, The mamas - Move.
I just saw your channel for the 1st time. What fun! I'm an Ikea fan so I would like to suggest when things get back to normal - the Ikea restaurant offers a smorgasbord usually 4x/yr for major holidays (Jul-Dec, Valborg-Apr, Midsommer-June, and fall-Sept). It's an all you can eat of everything on their menu - all the Swedish favs. Well I don't remember spaghetti, or gyro pizza on the table. Last year I ate so much, I hurt and couldn't eat for 2 days even though I'm vegetarian except I 💙💛🇸🇪 salmon. Mmm so good!
In Sweden we have this game called "burned balls". First, you hit the balls as hard as you can and then you run like hell while others try to burn you
A game you say...
IKEA does have a lot of Swedish food to buy, even surstömming when in season so do check them out. Tip: open the can under water.
Just one tip for you about the surströmming, when you open it do it under water because then you dont get the stinky smell.
It was 450 working days of leave when our kids was small, until they where 8 years old.
Come to Sweden and I'll show you guys around!😊
Hello, I am from Sweden. It,s fun that you are doing a reaction about our country. About surströmming, I woudn, t eat it If I where you, it smells terrible and taste even worse, but I am from the South. In the North they love it. I loved your videos about Marcelito Pomoy, he is my idol. He is not so wellknown in Sweden, yet, but I hope people Will recognise him soon. Keep up your good work, love from Sweden.👍🥰
Much love from Las Vegas to Sweden!
If Im not wrong US actually have a few bandy teams, but the sport is very small there. The main countries that play bandy is Sweden, Finland and Russia
I’m from Sweden and we got to taste surströmming in school and it was only me and my friend who liked it out of 23 people, soooo it’s not very common to like it....
Surströmming isn't rotten fish, it's fermented!
Where is ketchup supposed to go, if not on spagetti (and hotdogs)?
I am Swedish and like duriam, no problem with the smell. But the smell of sour herring beats everything, but is quite ok to eat
Jepp its fermented herring and when you have learned to appreciate the taste its just delicious... by the way archeologist have found 6000 year old prof of the practice of making surströmming in southern sweden.. Do not now if it was the smell that led them to it :)
Paternaty payments is the state that pays out in Sweden not companys. Many of our social bennefits are defined by the state and payed via our taxes. Thats why we have high taxes on everything :P
I sometimes add bbq sauce with pasta bolognese :)
Surströmming is not allowed on aircrafts so you have to go to Sweden if you want to try it.
Have a friend in N.Y that opened a can of surströmming. After 15 min. the police knocked on the door .They asked where the dead body was
10:27 Casually throwing up a picture of Filippa from Thundermother holding a can of Surströmming. :D
You should visit Sweden soon! You know who to contact if you want a place to sleep while visiting the most southern part of Sweden! 👊😎❤
I think our travel plans are on hold for quite a while now... 😢
@@ReactToTheWorld Yeah, of course! 😢🤧😷
And by the way if you call "IKEA" meatballs good again.... i would be careful saying that in Sweden. Thats like me calling a burger good, because i have been to Mcdonalds.
Jonna Jinton has out up two more Songs on her channel that you should check out :)
Ketchup is a Europén thing not just Swedish for exampel Heinz ketchup is the original made in Nederlands
And innebandy (floorball) is a big sport around the world...
2:45 She is totally like: "lets move now! RIGHT NOW!"
Whait a minut “brännboll” is a sport? I though it just was a game! ( I am from Sweden )
"Brännboll" or as the common swede refer to it as: "moving monopoly - destroy your friendships twice as fast"
Get a postbox for us to send things from Sweden
Please, don´t miss Jonna Jintons The Night of Light! 😊
really popular in sweden...eh...never heard of the guy before and I've been living in sweden for the last 36 years.
Yes, please do a Surströmming taste video! Bwahahaha ...
Would be nice to see you guys test swedish candy/snacks. :)
You guys don’t put ketchup on your pasta??🤔
Oh yeah
bandy actually comes from England and took of big in Sweden and Russia. and the sport is just about dead in England
Actually... You have the right for paternity leave, unpaid though, for 1,5 year. And then you have 480 days that you get compensation for. So if you afford it, you can be at home for almost three years, without having to resign from work. Then after that, you have the right to go down to working 75%.
Please react to ”bulletproof” by dotter from melodifestival this year. She came second.
The smell of surströmming is pretty bad. Some funny guy poured the gravy into a school locker, you could clearly smell something odd when the people with adjacent lockers opened their books that semester 😂
IKEA has some Swedish food! Maybe “World Market” as well!
Haha, durian is nothing compared to surströmming, I´m married to a Thai woman, they have something similar to surströmming to get flavour to there som tam.
“That looks yum” ......heeee...
Here you can order your next experiment with surströmming worldwide, www.surstromming.com . Just remember, never open the can inside a building unless you want to hurt the buildings owner bad... ;-)
If you think durian smells anywhere near as bad as surströmming then i dare you to try it
"I can eat this". I believe that when I see it :P
I have watched maybe 40 people attempt to eat this. Maybe 38 of them was throwing so much up that they never even tasted it. 2 took a bite an then threw up right away. It is difinitely worse than sardines!
TeTea the thing is that about 99% of the people who post vids eating it are doing it wrong. 😝
@@Templarofsteel88 Yeah, exactly :P
Durban is number 2 on the list of smelly food. Only beaten by surströmming😅
3:36 Although, the connections ain't that strong in all households :( They are just some people I know, pretty much..
I can add that if you as a father dont take time off to be with your child, you better have a realy good reason
I'm a Swede and have never eat surströmming. The smell is so bad and I can't see any reason for me to try something that smells worse than vomit 🤮😂
im from sweden, Imagine going into a public toilet when someone has been bad in the stomach, thats how surströmming smell
i would love to talk to you about Sweden, I love my country and im so proud of it, but ppl ho moved her and lived her for like a year dont know a thing. I mean I wanna talk, not write, ok?
Have u tried Kaviar
Fish eggs? Oh yeah, that's good stuff!

Yeeeej!! Swedish muckbang!
durian fruit does not even come close man.
You open the fish, under water Smells disgusting., but it tasts good.
Trust me as a Swede. Surströmming is discusting.
Italians: Pasta+Ketchup=Sin What!?
Sorry Father for i have sinned and...
Never mind, just remembered swedes are atheists now.
You know what makes it possible to have 1 year leave? unions.
Durian got nothing on Surströmming....
The guys vomiting in the pic with the Surströmming is vomiting from the smell, not the taste..
!Brännball" it´s a kids-game. Not a sport. Adult play it to.) But , no, nobody have ever done it as a sport. (No league, team and so on.) By the way. On a more "pressuring objekt" (You understand the joke later). f you promise to open the can in your apartment/in your home and eat it, I send you one or several cans (several - if you want to have a really "fun" party with former?! friends). Naturally I send it all for free.
Don´t worry i´m not a coco... The can is coco enough (Just be aware - It´s noting wrong with the can if it expanding to the point you think it might explode.) That´s usually what happen.(The expanding part, not the explosions. That´s a non-issue, okay?!) I´m going to be nice now. Open the can UNDER water. (Preferably at your balcony or something.) Way less smell that way. (The neighbors might still talk to you if you do it like that in the video - Otherwise they might call the cop - And they might call the coroner...) You get the picture... Do it that way, please! For no other reason take my advise on this so that there is no risk that the pressure from the can make the liquid from the can spray all over your apartment and/or you.
After that just remove all the part you usually don´t eat from a fish, bones, internal organs and so on and prepare it with
thin bread?! (Flatbread?) sour cream, almond potatoes (any potato will do), red onion, sour cream and chives. The fish is ready to eat. You don´t need to prepare it in itself.) Or just make your own blend from your culture with the fish. Who know, you might invent something good?! Anyhow the fish actually taste good - But the smell is the worst I experienced in all my life. That´s realy says something. I eat anything - Have been in more than 40 countries and tried a lot of strange food. Noting beat surströmmings (fermented Baltic herrings) smell.
If you only eat the fish it´s going to be a bummer. DON´T do THAT! OKAY?!
Nobody eat surströmming
Durian is nothing compared to surströmming.
Please
Spotify give you Paternity leave all over the world.
Eat it all up and be a real Swede
Talk about steeling some one else idea.... Make your own movies...
