- In today's scale RC helicopter build of the Roban EC130 800 size heli, we're getting the tested mechanics installed and getting the EC130 airborne.
I'll be covering important scale RC heli build items such as battery placement, fitting the mechanics, fenestron blade clearance, RX current draw, center of gravity and how not to fry your lighting system.
We'll then get this big beastie up in the air for the first time with the fuselage fitted, further checking operation, vibration and post flight log data.
By the way, motor to main shaft reduction ratio of the Roban HSM 800 mechanics is 13.8:1. I only mention this because I had a hell of a time finding it, and it's of course needed for correct head speed calculation in your governor setup.

It's so good to know that there is a person that knows the only appropriate music to play is classical.
I love big scale helis❤❤Best of the best looking machines.
John, You always continue to impress me with your level knowledge and expertise on this hobby. I love it! 15 years ago we never had anything like your channel to enjoy. THANK YOU!
🙂
As always enjoy your videos and learn something new every time👍. Best regards, Jim
Thank you! Cheers!
Congrats! Such a beautiful model so cool to see it fly. Well done
3:24 legendary 😂
I fell in love with scale flying about a year ago, and have gotten my first heli. It needs some fine tuning by someone more qualified than myself(for now). It's an Align T-rex 450 Pro, and it has some nice electronics with it, and I am excited to get going. Very interesting build and love the EC130!
Very cool, it even hangs slightly right skid low like the real thing!
John you did it again.I can see your love for the great hobby.Everything you always doing is perfect finnisch the job,no shortcuts. The music you selected saying it all.
Good luck….
amazing model!!
Respect from a german rc guy
I love the No Tar.
Awesome John - awsomee! Just about to embark on a Bell 222 Scale fuselage but then the Roban Apache. Luv your channel - i have my own. It's baby.....but it's mine.
Thanks & have fun with your scale build.
Get to the choppa! Man it does look badass in the air, and 20# isn't a pocket sized unit at all.
thats a great build, I've learned a lot from you over the years all the best keep up the good work awesome.
Thanks and happy flights 👍
Congratulations !! What a lovely heli and that fenestron look very cool.
Very nice scale!
Good luck from Austria!
Very fun to watch. Great job. I love the look of that helicopter too its what sold me on it!

Glad you like them 🙂
Great job mate
John you have done it again. This Heli Sounds great and very smooth, it looks Fantastic and a Superb build overall! I can't believe that the Cabin floor cleared the batteries... Sensational Build once again, btw I expect no less from you! Tipping the scales at 20 LBS, no John I've never flown a 10 Pin Bowling Ball. lol.
The Goosky is a terrific little Heli, I think you will really like it! Stay Safe and Healthy my friend.
Such a nice bird John.

Every one of these I ever built I struggled with the CG. Yours went pretty smooth John. Beautiful machine
Thanks
John that is so cool, can’t wait to see you fly it out in the field 👍😁
Me neither 🙂
Very beautiful
Very nice John! I'm about to start a new build soon and can't decide between the 130 and 135. Watching this is swaying me a bit toward the 130 though haha.. Keep the videos coming!
congrats on a beautiful heli! well done. I hope to get into scale helis in the future when i mastered my 470lp
Gorgeous bird
👍
greetings from the other side of the Atlantic ocean John and congratulations on a successful maiden of this beautiful bird. Thanks for letting us watch the progress and thanks for giving me a BIG LAUGH at 09:57min in the Video. („…shit hitting the fan…“ -priceless! 🤣)

Thanks for visiting
👏 👏 👏 beautiful. Love it.
What a nice model. You really know how to do 🙂
Thanks & Cheers
pretty cool.
très belle réalisation bravo a toi 😍👍
Nice job
thanks
Looking good! I'm about doing the same thing... just flew it in the fuse today... my tail servo gets up 100-110F... and it's got a lil weird shimmies... like it will be holding 'okay', then do a lil kick- mains are all good, tracking balance, etc... no noticeable vibrations...
Houston we do not have a problem roger niner sierra bravo looking good
Hi john!, you have a new suscriber, love your video and the natural way you share your experience. Very useful for me due I'm on the construction proces of Roban Bo-105. Love the dummy fuselage, I go for it before any scale mouting. Thanks for your help and good flights.
Thanks and welcome 👍🙂
Saweeeet! Congratulations.
Thanks 👍
@@Rchelicopterfun you bet! I need to make a "Flindstone flier" rig for the Huey. I think that's a good idea before I try to mount it in the fuse. Wish I had not installed the interior first like the manual suggests. I'm gonna have to cut a hatch in the bottom to add ballast I think.
Anyway. Can't wait to see more EC130 flights! My brother flies that exact bird in Las Vegas and I got to go up with him last summer. Lots of fun.
Seemed most stable at 1200 rpm and to me still looking just a touch tail heavy
But what a beautiful bird
Really excellent job putting it together
Can’t wait to see it fly all tweaked out
Thanks
Yes, thanks
Money well spent !! Superb Mr Salt....!! Hope you will do a video at dusk ( not in full darkness )with the lights and the pilot and the interior...
Yep, kinda looking forward to that myself.
She's beautiful , I'd be way to nervous to fly anything that expensive,
😎👍
🙂👍
Fabulous
🙂👍
1:40 press the Min Max button on your Fluke and it'll capture the peak current draw for you!
Nice 👍👍👍
Thanks for the visit
Beautiful but would be too afraid of crashing I will stick with my Blade 150S but that is very beautiful and a wonderful job building.
Very nice! I WAS kinda anti Fenestron for an RC heli since I haven't seen that many positives about reviews on them, at least with the Roban models, anyway. Your positive experience with this model has me considering the possibility of picking up one for my next heli purchase.
Yep, certainly way better than I was expecting - so far.
Muito top você teve que almentar a rotação do motor sabendo que a fusilagem é pesada
Man this is really awesome. I'd love to have something like this but you and others are making it seem like I need some sort of degree to operate. Yalls perfection is kinda killing it for people.
I love this model, I wanna do something like this on my channel.
R2D2, snap on tools and a 986 😎 I think I’m on the right channel
😄👍
Gorgeous. Is it better to put a fan on the esc,, get a larger spec esc or a larger heat sink perhaps with thermal compound?
Nice paint job, I prefer Maverick
I like that way to build models, neat and tidy ! Great works !
I have a question regarding receiver positioning , I saw that u place the receiver antenna at the font of the frame, have u check the RSSI and VFR % when the heli is flying away from u , will the carbon frame and mechanics cause signal drop ?
Hi Peter, The RX antennas are actually at the back of the frame mounted to the FBL gyro plate (shown in the build video ruclips.net/video/eDRr7n3Zq4g/видео.html around time index 8:45).
RX antenna positioning is always a compromise and a deep topic - way too much to cover in a simple YT comment response. I have a full page on my website covering it in detail: www.rchelicopterfun.com/rc-antenna.html
To answer your question however, I always do range checks with any model and most certainly this one. Like all of them, I'll lose practical visual range long before RF control range regardless of orientation.
Great job! Yeah, had plenty of change your underwear moments for me too. But that's what adds enjoyment to this hobby. Nice heli. Where can I buy a heli like that? LoL , just kidding. I know the frustration. Beautiful , enjoy.
Yes - spoken (written) by another enthusiast that understands this hobby.
Amazing machine. Congratulations. What TX/RX you using?
TX: FrSky Horus RX" FrSky X8R
Quite a lovely machine John so do you use a certain flight controller for your heli,s how do you handle altitude control ? is it all throttle or the f/c ? i know when i am training the use of throttle can be very tiring as i need to concentrate on positioning of the heli .Thanks for great video,s .
@John Blythe - I'm using the Bavarian Demon 3X flybarless system. I go over the electronics pairing in this video: ruclips.net/video/ycq4jW7JVao/видео.html
Like all collective pitch helicopters, I control my lift vector with collective pitch only, not throttle. Throttle/head speed is fixed and governed. Only electronic flight management offered by the Bavarian Demon is cyclic stability (replaces the mechanical flybar) and of course tail gyro. 🙂
it is really beautifull where it was impossible to fly on batteries it is now better than gasoline .
I like the red helicopter in the video your working on the 130?!? Is it
hi John.....very nice Scale heli.....witch Roban model would you recommend
That is impossible for me to answer for the simple reason I don't know what large scale RC helicopter building and flying experience you already have. For example, I wouldn't recommend any Roban model if you haven't built and flown a larger scale heli before. All of Roban's super scale 700 & 800 series are classified as requiring advanced level building skills.
If you have ample amounts of larger scale helicopter building & flying experience however, then I would suggest getting whichever Roban scale fuselage model you like the best. They all use the same basic Roban HSM mechanics platform, so they are all more or less equal in terms of mechanical quality. Of course, the more complex the mechanics (as is the case with Fenestron or angled tail drive or multi-bladed heads), the more difficult & maintenance intensive they become. As the engineering adage goes "complexity hampers both execution & reliability".
hi john how stiff is you tale to move by hand
I have been looking to get into scale helicopters, but I have no experience with building. Is there a specific model you would recommend for a beginner, or maybe some advice on how to start learning a build like this?
You first learn on Pod & boom (you never mentioned how much experience you have flying collective pitch RC helicopters). You can't learn to fly a larger collective pitch heli on scale (too fragile, to heavy and too costly). If you can already fly a fairly large collective pitch heli however (500 or larger) and rarely crash, then you can progress into larger scale. I cover options and suggestions on my Scale RC Helicopter Page on my site: www.rchelicopterfun.com/scale-rc-helicopters.html
As that page states, most people start with a scale fuselage that fits one of their existing Pod & Boom helicopters and slowly progress at your speed up to models like this from Roban, Vario, Alterbaum, etc.
Is it just me, or were there only 11 beeps when the flight packs were connected on the bench? Shouldn't there be 12 for the 12S setup?
Hmmm, not just you - that is all I hear as well. Will have to look into that.
Hi John your Roman is beautiful. I was wondering do you know where I can find information on scratch building an 800 series helicopter.
What does that helicopter cost, and where do you get them from that's so big?? I've had poor experience with obtaining one and one that flies-sign disappointed! If you build and sell, let me know what you charge??
I flew 3d helis for years but would like to build a scale heli. What kit do you use ? Do you build your own heli frame per the size of fusalauge or modify an align kit ?
Roban kit. Full details in description and in this build series.
This Helicopter is great, If I can purchase it. it is very expensive for me. It would be dream for me.
Hello friend a question I like your radio what brand is it?
FrSky
are the fenestron blades locked down or can they led / lag a little
You just tighten them enough so they are snug and stay in place. When they are that tight, they can lead and lag as required.
Hallo John,
Groeten,
Leo van Dorsten
I have another video with faster flight showing the tail performance better: ruclips.net/video/1Grlqsldf6M/видео.html
Yaw rate on mine is more or less consistent in both directions, but no question it will yaw to the right with greater ease going with the direction of the reactive torque. It's just way more efficient in that direction and won't pull as much power - just like a full size machine. I find if I run under 1100 RPM head speed, the tail response will be a little sluggish. I personally like 1150 RPM on this thing, but that is just me.
@@Rchelicopterfun
Bedank voor uw reactie,
ik heb ook de EC135 en EC145 van Roban,en deze hebben dat niet, maar ik vlieg de EC130 met 1250 RPM is zal proberen met 1150 RPM .
He’s we’re did u get all ur parts or did can u buy a T. rex 700 and use motor and rest
It's a Roban Super Scale 800 Kit (comes with custom mechanics and fuselage). Links are below in the video description as usual. Covered the unboxing of this kit in the unboxing video, part 1 of this build series: ruclips.net/video/3qM_1fg9110/видео.html
Flight at 15:01
what the price sir
hello friend I'm making one from scratch size 500 I'm demonstrating the whole step by step one look you'll like it!!!
Hello A question how long does a battery last or minutes of flights.
Depends on setup, flying style, battery capacity and how deep/comfortable your specific LiPo discharge level is. With my specifics, I get a safe (no lower than 80% discharge) 7:30 minutes with 5100 mAh packs.
