Your diaphragm could no longer pull on your lungs to open them because the chest is air tight. He was. He really loved the cool dummy prop but he was also glad to finish on Vikings and to go on to other stuff. They didn't give him much to work with from season 2 onwards, made him wait for 2 seasons to even get back to his main storyline, then made it as short as humanly possible but nonetheless blocked him for years from taking some cool, epic other jobs that are a real loss (can't say more but he had an offer for an even bigger series). So, yeah, he was happy at this point.

The back isn't as sensitive but how does it feel once it's hacked open and they hack into this HUGE wound again and again and again? And then, they didn't do it in this scene, but I've read they also would rub salt into the wound on top. 😖 Maybe that was even too brutal for Vikings (not to speak of King Aelle not actually being a villain).

It IS an incredibly painful way to torture someone to death. But even though the open back wasn't real, there were quite some real pain and injuries involved in creating the blood eagle scene. I'm just editing the part of Ivan's big Vikings interview where he talked about all the physical discomfort of the last two scenes.

Yes, there is dispute about it. Not much evidence that it was actually done and what we have seems to be unclear as to how the wording should be understood. Plus, literary reports aren't necessarily reliable factually. It could've been a literary device to spread fear amongst the enemies. But IF it has been done, this is how the art department of the show thought it would've looked. Some people have said it would look differently, because the shape of the upper body would be distorted if the ribs were cut off the spine and I think that's very probable. But I think they didn't want to make it look THAT gruesome.
As I remember it, the prosthetics guy said they were never going to show the back but he couldn't resist creating it anyway. I think payment was REALLY good on the show if he did this sort of work just because he felt tempted to. In any case, I'm happy he did and shared it on social media. 👍
