How to use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) with Authy

  • This video will show you how to use 2-Factory Authentication by using the Authy App. These apps will generate a One Time Passcode (OTP) that refreshes every 30 seconds and you enter that 6 digit code in after putting in your password. If you do not put in the correct passcode shown in the app it will not let you login. This is a great an easy way to lock your accounts to minimize the potential for having your account compromised. The app I prefer is Authy, linked below but Google makes an authenticator along with lastPass and a number of other companies.
    Authy - authy.com/
    Google Authenticator
    Google Play - www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...
    Apple Store - www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...

Adam, Thanks for the informative video. Looking forward to accessing more videos from you on this topic. Have a question about your video. At the 12:05 mark you talk about the back-up codes and saving them elsewhere. I assume that each site you setup with 2FA, you'll receive a box with codes--correct? Do you save those codes with a different app or eventually print/store them elsewhere? I was also reading from a security website that using SMS as part of 2FA isn't very safe since it can be redirected. Would be interested in getting your views (maybe in a future video) on the topic since some banks/credit unions are now using that option. Thanks.

    • @AdamOnTech
      @AdamOnTech  2 года назад +2

Thrilled you enjoyed it!! Yes, they will give you a bunch of numeric codes that usually has the option to download them. Most of the time I just screenshot the codes and save them to my Dropbox Vault. SMS is definitely not as secure as a bad actor can do a SIM card swap to get those codes. For 99% of people, we aren’t important enough for someone to do this usually but there are scenarios. Once I get over this cold I will do a video on this when my voice doesn’t sound like Dart Vader. I have a few more security videos on the list!!

Sorry for the delay, did you save the backup codes they give you when you setup 2FA on any site. If not you might be out of luck. One of the reasons I like Authy, it’s not tied to a device as you can download Authy on a different device and login.

Once I get my code and enter it on the website, I can't seem to shut authy down so it's not using up the battery when I'm done with the code. Am I missing something here??? Thank you!

You can completely quit an app the same way on Android and iPhone, swipe up from the very bottom of the phone and you will be able to scroll through all of your open apps. Swipe the app up on Android or iPhone to quit it completely. On Android you can swipe all the way to the left and tap on Close All and it will quit out of all your apps. Otherwise it shouldn't be running in the background, only when you open it up!

Thanks for the great video. I wonder if you could expand on this in terms of how to set up 2FA with Authy with multiple devices. For example, I have some accounts that have 2FA enabled on them. I have set them up on y desktop and phone. I have hired a remote virtual assistant and need to allow her access to these accounts. How do I have her set this up? I do not what to give her access to my Authy account as she would potentially have access to accounts I don't want her to access to. Info on this would be fantastic.

Glad you found it helpful!! Authy doesn't have sharing capability. Probably the best way to do it is to setup a different Authenticator like Google or Microsoft and put the ones you want to share in there, then share that account. The other thing you can do is if you see those devices the other person uses, put in the code yourself as the device will be remembered so you wouldn't have to enter it again.

Great video! I have Google 2FA and I need to convert to Authy. I scanned a Google 2FA QR code that I saved on my computer for an account and the Authy code is the same as the Google 2FA. So far so good. However, Authy asked if I wanted to use this as a backup and I did. I saved the backup PW. Is this a good way to convert the Google 2FA to Authy? Seems simple. I believe that I have saved the Google 2FA string of numbers for every account. Authy seems easier to use. Will I have a backup pw for every account? I subscribed to your channel. You make security seem easy. Thanks!!

That shouldn't cause any issues as both Google Authenticator and Authy are login based. At most it may ask you to put in your account password again for your Google account or your backup password again for Authy but you won't have to set everything up again since they are all tied to a login and not your specific device.

The reason I am asking is because I will be moving overseas soon and want to use my email instead of cell for 2 factor verification. It really depends on the bank. Most banks don’t allow for something like this to be used but it is slowly starting to show up. You would just need to check with your bank. Also, most banks and many other companies won’t allow to use 2FA with a Google Voice phone number or similar.

Adam, I am not tech-savvy at all. I had 2FA set up with Google, Authy and some other app. I decided to clean things up, but I managed to delete critical info. Now, I cannot log in to any of the sites I had 2FA set up for. When I try to access one of these sites, they first ask me to check my authenticator. Of course, I am now unable to do that. Then, it offers me an alternate way to log in, and takes me to a site that asks for one of my backup codes, which I do not have. Is there anyway to obtain access to my sites and start over again with 2FA? Thanks!

There is a little back and forth between the site/app and Authy to set it up. When you start going through the setup on the site/app it will give you a code you have to past into Authy. Once you have the code, go into Authy, click the plus to add a new site, it will ask to Scan QR Code or to Enter Key Manually, click on Enter Key Manually and then past in the code you were given. Once that goes in, Authy will generate a 6 digit code you need to enter in on the site/app and once that goes in you are all set! Once you do it a couple of times it is pretty quick and easy to setup.

I would screenshot the QR code and email it to myself, open it on a computer or tablet, then you can scan it. Not ideal but does work, they also usually give you a manual code you should be able to type in instead of scanning the QR code.
