Thank you for this John! I totally forgot I fixed my N64 this weekend. My N64 digitals flex cable needed resoldering and I had completely forgotten I fixed it on Friday. I'm going to play some Space Station Silicone Valley! 🤜🤛
@@lldjslim PSX had quality and quantity, in 97 alone, FF7, Castlevania Symphony of the night, MegaMan X4, Crash 2, Tomb Raider 2, Grand Theft Auto, Alundra, Gran Turismo, Tekken 3, Final Fantasy Tactics, Breath of Fire 3, Bushido Blade. I can keep going.
Turok was so much more than shooting dinosaurs. The huge labyrinthian levels were so easy to get lost in. It really felt like an adventure, and the HD remaster holds up really well today.
I got the Nintendo 64 in 1997 and it came with Diddy Kong Racing. I still have it, as well as many of these games as well. I still love the Nintendo 64 to this day.
I recently bought the DS remake of Diddy Kong Racing and was disappointed about all the changes and terrible touch screen levels. The N64 version is so good.
I remember going into a place called A1 Games with my best friend every day we could, and would pay for time on the N64 so we could play Goldeneye 64 since neither of us had one. I don't even want to know how many dollars we spent for 30 minutes of deathmatch with strangers.
Yes, it was one of my most hyped purchases from watching Monday Night Wars, and getting to play dream matches before they ever happened on PPV. I still feel it's my favorite one, I just like the bare bones feel without all the added content that just slows me down.
It's nice that 25 years later we can look back on these games without bashing them for being "kid-friendly" as DKR often was at the time (and even though it's not in this video, Banjo-Kazooie).
YES! I always played Goldeneye and Perfect Dark with the 1.2 control layout where you move with the C buttons and look around with the joystick. Everyone thought I was crazy and now that you mention it I think it was because of Turok.
1997 was my favorite year, so many good games. Didn't have a PS1 or PC until later, so N64 was an entirely unique and mind blowing experience at the time. The 4 player on so many of these games was a blast too. Sub Zero got strategically re-shrink wrapped and returned to the store. lol
I never had an N64 but the games I played a lot at my friend's house: - Mario Kart 64 - Xtreme G - F-Zero 64 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Star Fox 64 - Diddy Kong Racing - Goldeneye 007
So many ideas in that game, with so many unexpexted events that just happened, one after the other- riding a cat, a tricycle, fighting a birdman who flirted with the main protagonist, at some point an older character is introduced and when we see hia grandson again while we're doing some Olympic games pastiche we find out the old man's DIED but he... didn't do anything important. Just showed up, then died of old age. That game was so committed to keeping you on your toes, and it's seared into my memory ever since.
Extreme-G was the game that I bought with my N64. I played it to death. It's great! I think I own every game you covered here. My friends and I played some 3 player Hexen Co-op recently. We got to about the 3rd level after several hours. It's one of those "where do I go" kind of games.
Been playing goldeneye with my son for a few weeks now. He loves it. It is so cool that I can sit down and enjoy the classics that I grew up with and have him appreciate it just as much as I did. I got a free 40 something inch crt tv and the magic is still there. Great video. I had forgotten extreme-g.
4:35 my mom gave me star fox 64 as a present when I got out of middle school. My brother was home from college and we spent a good amount of time playing it over that summer. We even took the n64 with us on a trip out of state and hooked it up to hotel TVs.

Hard disagree on Tetrisphere. That game was great on its single player and brought Mum, Dad and us kids around the TV for hours multiple times a week even after I got my gamecube. Like any puzzle game it just requires learning.
Best game for the 64 was Goldeneye. But... I have to disagree with you on Tetrissphere. I absolutely loved that game, and you just had to keep at it and then when it "clicks" in your head, the game was AMAZING. I do miss the N64 days.
@@edgarfriendly4731 When playing retro games, you always have to keep that in mind. For their time... The cool thing is that the XBox version of Goldeneye controls like a modern FPS, so it is amazing! Nostalgia with great controls, all in one.

The first Aki wrestling game released here was WCW vs. the World for the PlayStation (which was also awesome) and WCW vs. NWO: World Tour is its direct sequel.

Automobili Lamborghini was one of my favorites, you just got to play real cars that you never would see in other games for a while. Yeah, that first year with the N64 was HOT!!!
I still remember in the 90’s, walking to Toys R Us with my younger brother early in the morning just to stand in line to buy an N64. It was a long line and tiring but worth it! Especially when WWF No Mercy came out so much fun for hours 😊😊😊
Yeah, I'm still working on making it more tight. Just 'here a game, here' what it looks like' I'm not one to review, just talk about cool stuff we played when it came out.
Finally someone mentions Extreme G! I remember my cousin renting that game while we were on school holidays and then eventually buying it! Was such a fun game! I had the PS1, so I was only an NES and Gameboy kid in terms of Nintendo, but this one was such a fun game!
My friend and I used to get baked and play San Francisco rush in his parents basement in 97. We would play that stunt track for hours. I graduated in 97. Hard to believe that was over 25 years ago.
I LOVED Tetrisphere!! Rented it a TON, but sadly, I don't own a copy. That being said, I might be surprised in a bad way after 26 years away from it, BUT I still really want a copy to see if my nostalgia goggles come off. They definitely did when I finally got a copy of Top Gear Rally.😬
Freaking John Riggs when it came to the World Tour WCW game and tossing out the AJPW/NJPW wrestlers, I remember playing as a kid having no idea who they were but having to look up years later. 1997 for the N64 was wonderful. Great video!!!
I don't like when people say some games aged badly. Flaws were already visible at the time, and a game doesn't suddenly get bad. x) For instance Turok wasn't that great when it came out if we're being honest, compared to Goldeneye 64 which perfectly stood the test of time. In my opinion games don't age, but players can age and see flaws more accurately.
I love many of these games. I don't care much for the FPS (not my favorite genre at all, although I did enjoy Turok for its setting and atmosphere, yeah, including the fog), but Blast Corps, Tetrisphere and, especially, Diddy Kong Racing are amazing. And I only bought my N64 in 2018, so no nostalgia glasses
Turok was the coolest game ever to me when I was 12. I remember putting in the cheats and just running through it. Turok 2 was amazing. Man 1997 was so good.
I knew most of those games back in the day. I think the reason why San Fransisco Rush was so good was because of the huge ramps and finding the secrets.
A lot of good games on Nintendo 64 Castlevania 64 Killer Instinct gold GoldenEye Super Smash Brothers Star Fox 64 Perfect Dark Pokemon Stadium one Pokemon Stadium gold Hydro Thunder Conker's Bad Fur Day Bomberman WWF no mercy Doom 64 Super Mario Tennis
That Turok game in the arcade with the big machine gun controller was so fun. When we rented the 64 one it was so hard to play because of the controls. It sucked!
While the graphics on N64 and capabilities certainly were better, the actual games do not surpass Super Nintendo, which is still Nintendo's Golden Era IMO.
1998 was peak N64. Banjo Kazooie, Ocarina of Time, Expansion Pak, Turok 2, Rouge Squadron and Legend of the Mystical Ninja starring Goemon. 1997 was good, but 1998 was better.
Upvoted for Mystical Ninja. When I suddenly started piloting a medieval giant robot and unleashed a superfast pummeling attack on another giant medieval robot... I knew I was playing something I'd never forget.
Wow, I remember Turok 1 but never finished it that I can recall I believe rental. Owned Mario Kart, GoldenEye, Star Fox cuz of the Rumble pak later got a red for the controller it had a switch so 3 or 4 memory cards and rumble pak in 1 was awesome, so glad rumble was put into controllers cuz take the pak out put in memory card, hit button wait, data save hit button, take card out put pak in hit button back to action. Someone please time that for a vid 1 haven't had a N64 in years! I did get an N64 USB controller tried a starfox emulator but there was no built in rumble, the program allowed Xbox 360 that with rumble worked but the buttons nope felt wrong so dropped emulation.
No lie. I had just turned 15 in 1997 and for my birthday I got more than enough money to buy one. I didnt want one in 1996 cause I had just got my PS1 in 1995 but by 1997 there was a game I was hell bent on playing wihich was Star Fox 64. I bought one with just that game and it kept me straight for hours. Nostalgia.
Mega nostalgia for Bomberman 64. Game was pretty hard. Also, while I'll give Mario Kart 64 the better characters and its battle mode, definitely say Diddy Kong Racing feels like a better game overall.
I had Turok as a kid and I TRIED to like it soo much but those controls, man. Just not an enjoyable experience. Of course I have a story with all of these on this list but Brutal Doom 64, if it was just brighter it was a really good game. I just wasn't aware of it back then because I couldn't see a thing. Heads up- now there's a Brutal Doom 64, and it is soo good. Tetrisphere is awesome. I noticed in the footage you didn't grab the pieces and move them side to side before placing your next piece. Definitely makes it a lot better! Mortal Kombat Mythologies I got for PS1 complete with the cheesy cutscenes. I loved it and hated it at the same time. I picked it up on N64 a few years back to find the cheesy cutscenes replaced with slideshows. Such a bummer!
This was such an amazing time for Nintendo! My fantasy was shooting dinosaurs so I loved Turok haha. It was definitely a case of quality over quantity every game had its own charm and each game was breaking new ground in its own way!

The controls were total garbage. I have my 64 still and went back to Turok after playing modern shooters for years. It’s not good
It heavily relies on nostalgia. If you didn't play it back in the day it controls like ass nowadays so it's basically unplayable.

I did get an N64 USB controller tried a starfox emulator but there was no built in rumble, the program allowed Xbox 360 that with rumble worked but the buttons nope felt wrong so dropped emulation.
bro I freaking love tetrispher its one of my favorite games on the n64
and some how the planes on Diddykong racing handeled better then the carts.
When I think back to my N64 days I realize that I didn't have time to play these games as all my time was consumed by playing Quest64
I love Mischief Makers! It was one of the first N64 games I played.
Nostalgia.
Duke Nukem 64 was Christmas Jam for 98!
Duke Nukem has always been my favorite I wish they would do another one! I liked them all!
Be great to get more of this series.
This was such an amazing time for Nintendo!
My fantasy was shooting dinosaurs so I loved Turok haha.
It was definitely a case of quality over quantity every game had its own charm and each game was breaking new ground in its own way!
Only thing missing was the Robotrek game.
