  • This was the original concept for the finale to the film but the music was cut and did not appear in the 1995 theatrical print and video versions. In 2005 it was mostly restored except for a few lines of dialogue and some cutting of the "If I Never Knew You" reprise at the end.

      Right? Truly a smooth transition from one song to the next. John Smith didn't leave with Pocahontas physically, but he left with her spiritually through the wisdom she taught him in the scene when she sings "Colors of the Wind". It's almost like a musical way of saying "if I never knew you, I would have never knew how to paint with all the colors of the wind and sing with all the voices in the mountains." Then John Smith waved goodbye to her the way she taught him 🥲 so much deepness in this movie

    Personally, I'd prefer it if they kept Nakoma's line. That way, the ending wouldn't be so contradictory. Powhatan saying you should chose your own path (something that Pocahontas had clearly shown a desire to do earlier in the film), but Pocahontas decides that staying just completely contradicts what she was hoping for. It makes more sense to have Nakoma remind Pocahontas that she was a harbinger of peace, so, she must stay so as to prevent another war from happening. So, that would give her better reasons to stay behind.

    • @Evilriku13

      It wasn't made by Walt Disney studios though. The thing was, in the early 2000s, Disney wasn't making any money anymore, so Disneytoon Studios, the people that made the cartoon shows, made a bunch of cheap cash-ins to try and squeeze some money from the popular classics. And people like my mum bought several of these cheap sequels, so obviously their plan worked. And Pocahontas was one of the many films that got cheaply forced into a stupid sequel that I had to endure as a kid, and have my little six-year-old hear squashed in the process. Sorry for rambling, I'm still angry. :)

    While I'm torn on the vocal reprise of "If I Never Knew You" the orchestration in this version is so much better. Firstly, the individual instrument parts are clearer, allowing you to hear more soloistic lines, especially in the French horn and upper woodwinds.
    I'm glad to see that sound editors have since moved away from the practice of cleaning orchestra parts so much that sound like fluff. I did a side by side comparison, and while the orchestration isn't BAD in the final version, it might as well be synth because of how...overly cleaned up it sounds. People in the 90s and early 2000s only liked to hear strings I guess, since often orchestra parts were so fluffed that you totally lost the double reeds, flutes and seldom heard low brass. Pizzicato (hopefully I'm spelling that right, I conduct Wind Ensemble so my string terms are rusty) lines also lose a lot of their punch in the final. You can really hear them here.
    Also, I was sorely disappointed that the French Horn solo in the build was cut from the final. My Horn player friends would be really upset.

    I'm so glad they cut their singing out and decided to go for a less broadway vibe! Some people criticize the movie for being too serious. But despite not being as successful as other movies from the 90's, I think it was important to have more movies directed to all audiences. The Hunchback is a great example of a movie that wasn't made only for children and remains one of my favorites!

    • @michelmoutinho

      ***** I think it's silly that Disney tends to make their movies so child friendly. I miss more serious stories and edgy characters! If you could connect to Pocahontas at age 5, it means it's possible to tell stories with more depth and still be successful in the box office.

      I don't think THIS song should've been cut. Their romance seems... pretty lackluster without it. Disney movies tell a lot of their story through songs, and cutting out the big romance song makes Smith's and Pocahontas's relationship kind of boring in the original cut.

    • @adventurethings601
      @adventurethings601 9 лет назад +14

      It was a terrible mistake to cut this song out of the film, it's not childish at all it gives a lot more of emotion to the story and the ending is way more powerful than the official version. They could have done the best Disney movie ever just letting this song be, but they didn't, so The Little Mermaid takes it's place instead.

      @@xs0528 I still think the song was pretty cute. I think Nakoma bit was to show ..well first what peer pressure looks like, to which her father followed up with "you must choose your own path" but its to explain why she stayed behind; she recognizes her responsibilities. In the real story, she ends up going with John anyway so, whatever. i thought the song was cute.

    What really strikes me with this scene is that Pocahontas` final choice of staying is pretty much a full circle for her relationship with her father. In their first scene together, he`s chosen the path for her (of proposing her to marry Kocoum). But after the execution and realizing her maturity and independence, he lets her choose her own path at the end. So it truly makes it a full circle.

    This should've been added on to the 10th anniversary DVD. I do wish she had gone with him, though. I don't care what history says! They're meant to be together forever!
