    I remember as a teen, my Grandmother taking me down to Union Station in Los Angeles. We went up on the platform and there was a line of old F-9 class locomotives, one lead unit had a rabbit smashed on the cow catcher. Like they left the fur and the skull on there as a morbid souvenir! LOL Nonetheless, *when the pneumatics went off on those things, it wasn't the gentle spitting sound of these modern units. They all fired off like a shotgun!* These were 3-unit locomotive sets. I'll never forget that... 6:10

    Around the 8 minute mark there are doing a brake test at full throttle which is required before starting out on the run I believe...

      Older engines had the air compressor attached to the main crankshaft. You would throttle up to run 5 to pump up your air. New engines there is an electric motor for the compressor, so you don't have to throttle up.

      Thanks! These sounds were very beautiful! I wish they would've sat there longer. I'm glad I got 8556. And speaking of getting locomotives, this may be a little off-topic, but I caught my first KCS Southern Belle locomotive earlier today.

    I've never heard of a talking speaker warning system before. Fascinating.. Why is there danger from another train coming?

      Suzanne Moore So pedestrians can know if a second train is coming.

      METX210 those ATWS signs are pretty effective but, they can use some adjusting. I realize half the time, they go off even when the train is just pulling into a siding!

      Railfan Brony Sorry for the late reply.
      I've actually witnessed that before.

      @GMTX-kg8ep 7 лет назад

      METX210 yeah,
      But, other than that, they are pretty useful. No wonder, I've not heard of anything serious besides the Fox River Grove bus tragedy.

      Railfan Brony Me either. Or nothing on that scale of tragic.

    Is that UP dash 8 even running?

    • @AwesomeDesertTrains
      @AwesomeDesertTrains 7 лет назад

      its s dash9

    • @silicon212
      @silicon212 7 лет назад

      Nope, it's a dash 8. Look at the trucks, look at the radiator. The dash 9 uses split cooling and has a thicker radiator section. The dash 8 has the old 3-axle trucks, like the -7 and U series. The dash 9 has the hi-ad trucks aka the 'rollerblades'. Also, look at the fuel tank. The dash 9 has a less angular tank. The dash 8 has the same angular tank as the older GEs.

      LiLJRAE The sound you're hearing is moisture being purged from the air system.

      Those are the air dryers expelling water vapor from the air tanks.

    • @gordonvincent731
      @gordonvincent731 6 лет назад

      Automatically blows out condensation from from the brake lines.

    • @shaedbuech7361

      Pressure, moisture Purge, one of my old rigs had an issue with the air dryer, would sound like a locomotive, at an 800rpm idle. Pressure relief would keep blowing
