  • Cross-overs and SUV's are all the rage in motoring world wide. As the fastest growing segments in terms of sales, new models are being added constantly by almost every manufacturer. In most cases, a standard hatchback model is now complemented by a "Jacked-Up" or high riding sibling.
The Honda Jazz has been around for many years now through numerous generations. Late last year, Honda SA added the crossover version dubbed WR-V to the range to appeal to the countless motorists who are now looking for the raised ride height that this genre of vehicles offers.
Built on the Jazz platform, the WR-V gains approximately 40mm in length, width and ground clearance. Interestingly it also gains a small amount in wheelbase length too.
On the exterior the new model is distinguished by lots of body cladding and roof rails, plus the noticeably increased ground clearance. The range topping Elegance, as tested, has features like LED headlights and foglights plus keyless entry and starting.
The interior is largely familiar to anyone who knows the Jazz, so is overall a very comfortable and spacious place. The Honda "Magic Seats" system for folding of the rear seats is there for extremely versatile loading. Once again, Elegance spec gives you a 7 inch touchscreen with reverse camera plus cruise control.
The WR-V in SA has been launched using the familiar 1.2L 4 cylinder petrol engine as used in the base models of the Jazz. The figures of 66kW and 110Nm are telling and I personally cannot understand why the 1.5 engine is not available as well.
The smaller engine is fine around town but is definitely wanting when cruising at freeway speed. At 120km/h in 5th gear the little engine is screaming at 4000 RPM. Also, the lack of torque is just too obvious when hitting even the slightest incline. The stubby 5 speed gearshift is a pleasure in operation and all controls are light and easy in general use.
Fuel economy is a strong point and after a week of commuting and freeway driving a figure of 6.8l/ 100km is very acceptable. A freeway cruise showed 6.2.
Although this model is fitted with LED headlights, I found that the lighting on normal or low beam was not as strong as I would like. High beam was excellent, but obviously courtesy to oncoming drivers means that you can't use this much around town. Perhaps it's simply a matter that the beams need adjusting on the test car.
The Jazz has always had a reputation for quality and reliability which are apparent in the WR-V as well so I'm sure that the new model will win over many buyers in this category. Fit the 1.5 engine and this will really become a strong contender.
The Elegance model is currently priced at R319 900 and this includes a 4year/ 60 000km service plan.

Hey John. I am about to purchase this car second hand. If you ended up getting the car would you please share your experience? Also, are suspension issues pricey to fix if you know?

@@AmaniMohlabaniKolotiKata-yb6nyHI Sir. If you purchase it for only town driving it is excellent. On the Highway , more than 110kmh it is very very poor. No power and VERY NOISY. In town, no prob. Good car.

Great review, thank you :-) just one thing, the audio is too sharp, would probably be better without the mic setup
