      I noticed for all these old races from all the networks, the announcers are just as iconic and legendary as the drivers and tracks. I forgot a few. These all bring back better times and days.

    It's shocking the lack of safety features these cars had compared to today's machines.

      Yet the cars were still quite safe considering they were hitting concrete walls for the most part. By the late 80s seat technology was rapidly improving, the restraints were quite modern and the roll cage had pretty much been perfected. Still, drivers side hits (got Bobby) as well as fire and eventually sudden stops would be the defining issue.With all this said, drivers did suffer a lot of broken bones (especially legs) back then because the restraints were ultimately limited allowing arms and legs to flail about during a wreck. Even so, all things considered, safety was at or above the standard of the era relative to F1 and Indycar. These cars with soft walls/hans devices and injuries would have been cut by 80 or 90% probably.

    Today's fans that go to talladega dont know the struggles of going to a race back in the 80's and 90's when the races were in june and July. The temps were between 85°-95° and you would sweat a couple of pounds off. Thank your lucky stars that they moved the dates to where the weather is much more comfortable.

    1:19:50 boy how times have changed. nova computer systems
    2:06:36 Dale throws the late block on sterling once again.
    {those drivers would have a history of tough battles and Schraders in the middle of it too}
    little did we know how the dance would go.
    AND JUST LIKE cbs TO GO OFF THE AIR WITHOUT A VICTORY LANE INTERVIEW, BECAUSE THEY RAN LONG AND golf is scheduled.
    at least its not ABC's wide world of sports where you would have to watch lumber jack compettion and polish yatzy Ping-Pong tournament
    just to catch a fleeting glimpse of the race tape delayed of course.

    Darrell was pretty fast at the plate tracks during this time but kept getting outran till the 89 Daytona 500 when he won on fuel mileage. Schrader or Earnhardt woulda got that one had there been another caution late... Also, Schrader was a pretty good wheelman so it's pretty surprising that he was only able to win a handful of Cup races in his career, particularly since he took over that car Richmond dominated in...
