What's your personal feeling about coalescence? You said something about not remaking this track out of spite. It sounds like there was a discourse of some kind around it.
I can attest to this as when ROR2 first came out I had to go on the forums of steam to get people to play with. Risk of Rain 2 really was the friends I made along the way on steam :)
_"March nineteenth, twenty-two fifty-five. Please state your name for the record."_ _(There's a long silence.)_ _"This is a safe place, my friend. Take your time if you have to. But you have to state your name for the record."_ _"...Commando."_ _"Mmmm. See, the thing is, that's not your name. That's the classification of your job title as it relates to your position on the UES Safe Travels, but your name according to the logs should have been [REDACTED]. Is that correct?"_ _"I don't know that name."_ _"I can't say I find that surprising. You've been gone a long time. Four years to the day."_ _"Far longer."_ _"So you've mentioned. How much longer?"_ _"Unsure. I don't know how long it was between deaths."_ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The creature stood on the edge of the road, a series of horizontal white lines before it. No, him, it reminded itself. Himself. It'd been a long while since he had needed a term to refer to himself. Petrichor had stripped that from him, the endless massacre, the bodies piled up, sparking husks of destroyed machines that he himself had battered and broken and- He shook his head, antlers swaying and the phantom arm mounted at his shoulder clenching its violet knife. A mantle of pieces and devices were stuck to him, loosely moving about even though he knew they would not detach. Two pedestrians stood beside him, nervously eyeing him. They were human. Partially modified. One had a prosthetic, one had glasses. Did glasses count as modifications? No, they were augments, he supposed. A temporary addition. He looked at them, the yellow dome of his head twisting atop his narrow shoulders, red lenses glittering. Without a word, they turned as one and started walking the other direction, crossing the road in a different place. Now that they were gone, he looked forward and down. Forty feet of road in front of him. A short distance. Such a short distance. Just one step forward, followed by another, and another, slowly moving over the crosswalk until he was on the other side of the street. An easy thing to do. All he had to do was take the first step, and then the second. The road wasn't blocked off. Hovercars and trams and buses drove past, some pausing for a moment as their drivers stared wide-eyed at the vaguely humanoid monstrosity standing in front of the crosswalk where it'd been placed by government officials trying to help. Where he'd been placed, he reminded himself. It was positive to attach humanity to himself. Although there were a few people who told him was alright to be an it. Pronouns and whatnot. He wasn't sure identifying as a weapon was healthy for him right now. A light turned yellow, and then red. Another light turned green. The crosswalk was open. Commando took a deep breath, the goat leg replacing his own twitching, the red whip at his hip swaying in a wind that wasn't there. One step. Just one step. He lifted his leg, and took one step. His foot landed in the next state over. Dammit.
Back at it making story's again can you make another one about the new the void boss end cut cutseance whene it's show all void monsters dieing I would to see a short story about surviver leaving the see that happened I would love to see it in comments so I like man
This is such a marvellously written little chunk of story. I love the equal parts melancholy and silliness of Commando's state of being, acknowledging the loss of his ability to recall regular life while also considering how bizarre and darkly funny it would be to be estranged from humanity because you've got a bunch of random junk stapled to you that's inexplicably made you uncontrollably powerful.
It's one thing for an experience to take your life from you. It's another for it to take your death, as well. Oh wait that's just a joke about movement speed buffs
I love how in the final level they basically allowed Chris to take over by having just a long walkway with music. That's some serious faith in your composer!!
@@AstronautDown hell yeah man, I was hoping that was part of the reason for the hallway, you've got yourself a great team in these folks, this song got me all sorts of teary eyed
When I first got here I was like "hmm, didnt expect the music to be so quiet" then the guitars kicked in and my jaw litteraly dropped, god teir song right here.
Considering the track "Your gonna need a bigger ukulele" exists, this means that commando shreds the regular sized ones out of existance for this song, and he needs bigger ones to replace them. Solution? Tesla coils. Not only do they do electric shenanigans, you can play music with them too, so its basically a uke in essence. Just, bigger, and better.
to translate the description; I thought of a world without memory, without time, I considered the possibility of a language that ignored nouns, a language of impersonal verbs or indeclinable epithets. Thus the days were dying and with the days the years, but something akin to happiness happened one morning. It rained, powerfully slow.
I thought the description was en español because I set all my apps to Spanish when I started learning... So its in Spanish for everyone? Huh I always assumed Chris was greek, with the surname and all 😅
I played risk of rain for the first time around 7 years ago. I was 14-15 when I first played it with my friend Davis. We would spend hours playing it until 3am, doing run after run before having to get up and go to school the next day. Coalescence has been on my playlist to this day, and I honestly think it’s one of my most listened to songs ever. I’ve bought everything Chris has put on Bandcamp, and I will never forget the good times I’ve had playing these games and listening to these songs. Chris, thanks for sticking with music. You’re one of the best.
I swear when I heard the beginning of coalescence in this song I literally had to stop playing and almost started tearing up, fucking perfect song you’ve made Chris
"This relic tells a story. But it is not a fairy tale, it’s a tragedy. A story of betrayal, regret, and sorrow. A story of two.” "Uh… okay…? How the hell do you know that?”
ok but actually, how the hell does he know that. like seriously how. the only people who could know is the heretic(i forgor the real name), mithrix, and providence. ok actually it’s probably providence. its probable that the lemeruians have some form of language, and providence could speak it. but i think its more likely, that perhaps providence told it to a few lemurians, and this is one of the lemurians that was told it, and talking to another one.
He said he'd never make a Coalescence 2. The absolute madlad. This blows the original out of the water by MILES, the pure atmosphere behind the track and the area it plays in was mindblowing. When that guitar kicked in, I had absolutely no shame in crying. I haven't choked up that hard in such a long time. Thanks for the memories, Chris.
Honestly I think this is so good because of Coalescence. Yes the song is legendary, but the emotion of it is just enhanced by the connection with the original.
@@deadlynova9941 Nothing _convinced_ me, it was something I had in mind very early on, before we even launch EA, as a way to come full circle thematically and this aligned with the what Hopoo aimed for the final level, so there it is. I'm not making decisions about a game I'm working on based on popular opinion or personal whim (or spite).
Those 4 notes right where the timestamp is remind me of "Balcony" from Cave Story, for just a brief moment. I actually thought that's what you were referring to at first.
People fail to realize the time And effort put into music like this. There is something deep and foreboding about the tone of this music. It builds toward a dominant force where you feel helpless, a despot of sorts, almost as if you can tell something malevolent is waiting around the corner. A fantastic finale to a well thought out and intriguing game. A job well done. It is something I will look back on with nostalgia. Impressive. The pure talent require to make music like this takes years. I cannot explain how impressed I am.
Coalescence was one of the most memorable songs I've ever heard, no actually just getting to the Contact Light with that song was the most memorable moments in gaming for me, and you Chris have outdone yourself, you raised the bar for memorable moments in a video game so impossibly high with con lentitud poderosa that if I were to make a list on the most memorable parts in any video game, the whole list would be full of triple A titles. Except one indie game at the very top being Risk of Rain 2 Con lentitud poderosa may not be the best song in the world, but it sure as hell is the most memorable. Risk of Rain may not have block buster level story writing Risk of Rain may not have the best gameplay Risk of Rain may not have the best graphics but it sure does make memories. Good job Chris, you win, you actually just win, the bar for memorable moments in video games is just set way too high.
we went from "coalescence" and "precipitation" to "con lentitud poderosa" and "You're gonna need a bigger ukelele" they're both used to same way, the walk up to the boss and the boss fight
I dont feel the same Risk of rain gameplay is amazing Risk of rain graphics are nice Risk of rain soundtrack is insane Risk of rain story is good for an game of its type Of course it isnt the best in any, but fuck off its good enough on what it needs to be
@@monikaisdonewiththeinterne2039 I sure isn’t the best there is but it’s damn good, not a single game in the world has stuck with as much as risk of rain
The swelling of the sound and the guitar(ukulele) at 2:07singing out so loudly and powerfully… dude, I had no idea that music could have this much raw emotion and feeling in it
I can't tell you how much this song and the entire risk of rain project helped me get through hard times but i'm surely not the only one that wants you to know, that no matter how hard things get you should keep going and always remember everything you have done so far wasn't in vain it was for yourself and the people that enjoyed it. I hope that this small amount helps you and please keep up the great work.
Amen brother. Same here. It got me through my partners pregnancy and shortly followed by a messy separation. Risk of Rain 2 kept me going through hard times and this is probably one of the finest tracks.
Beautiful message Robert! I will never forget the first time I arrived here, in this room. It did something strange to me when I beat the game for the first time. My blessings for Risk of rain, and everything around it :]
When it started showing all of the early access updates at 2:09 I may have teared up just a little. This game got me through some tough times lately and is one of the few things still keeping me sane during this quarantine. I legit don't have words to explain how much this game means to me. Thank you and the development team for creating this experience, i can't wait to see what the future holds for the game. Now the fun part, beating it on Monsoon with all the artifacts on....
True. But playing with all the artifacts is quite a different challenge than Eclipse. Not harder, not easier, just different. Honestly I'm most likely going to end up doing both in the future when console is released
I'm in the same boat. This game has been with me through two major relationships, one past and decimated, and one current and struggling. I've played this game with both partners (separately, of course) and have shared the love for this game with them. It got me through the impossible breakup that I endured, and is getting me through the rough times in my current relationship. It's a master class of a game that you play with a friend, no matter how important that friend is.
Chris, I want you to know that this song is the perfect length and has the optimal mood for the microwave cooking of a P.F. Chang’s Home Menu Pork Shoyu Ramen. At 4 minutes, 51 seconds, it fits the total time of 3 minutes of heating and 1 minute and 30 seconds of heating with a short stirring period between the two. The anticipation at the beginning of the song, with quiet piano is reminiscent of your younger self enjoying cheap top ramen from the bag. The guitar explosion is the middle of the cooking- the ramen would be edible now, it is great and smells like food. But you can do better. So you stir it and put it back in for another amount of time, eager to see it better than before. By the time it is done with its second round in the microwave, the triumphant guitar is fading away, leaving you satisfied and ready to eat your meal. A truly inspired piece. P.S. the ramen was fine. Better than other microwave meal options, but if it’s not on sale it’s really overpriced so try this method at your own risk. Overall rating: tasted like salt, but overall fine dining
The piano, parts from Coalescence, the guitar and literally everything... This is the perfect theme for the last and the final challenge. Thank you, Chris, for the soundtrack. Thank you, Hopoo Games, for the game. Thank you all. For one of my greatest experiences ever.
"...And his music was electric." A huge thanks for what has become a daily listen and one of my favorite soundtracks. I can't stress enough how much I love your work and how much I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!
"They knew to stay away from the wells - but they were just kids. And they wanted to know. They threw in dirt and stone and kifruit and starseed, watching as they collapsed. Thorp! The gravity wells would swallow up everything. Glass and mud and silver. Wind. Heat. Pulsar radiation. And when his brother wasn't watching, Mythrix would throw in worms. Thorp! But only when he wasn't watching. You see, his brother loved worms. It would make him sad. But Mythrix didn't care much about worms. He was just curious. But one time, his brother was watching, and his brother loved worms."
"It looks like starseed, tanning in dirt. It smells like hot stone, and tall grass. It tastes like spiced fruit, sweet and hot. It feels like solar winds, and solar chimes. It sounds like two brothers, chasing glass frogs in the sun."
I was playing this song in my brother’s car today, because we were playing good songs to test the new speaker system. I asked my brother to put this song on, and the whole time both he and my sister were like “never pass him the aux again” because of how solemn the beginning is Then 2:05 happened. With bass-boosted speakers, it definitely hit different. About halfway through, my brother put it on loop, looked back at me, then nodded his head. It’s really hard to get my brother’s “seal of approval” on a song outside of his normal genre, so I’m definitely sharing this with you
@@AstronautDown No, thank YOU for making a soundtrack I would shamelessly blast into a friend’s car in an attempt to get them to play this absolute banger of a game.
Risk of Rain's music invokes a feeling in me that I hadn't felt since I first played Starcraft, the port on the n64 at that (little me was obsessed with it). As a result, RoR invokes some strong sense of nostalgia despite being nothing like the thing it reminds me of. It carries a lot of the emotional weight and familiarity while being a completely new experience.
Talk about coincidence, I search for music posted over a year ago and within a day one of my favourite creators comments on the very track I was searching for

@@AstronautDown I feel the same way but about the song. I still can't believe a song that had defined a pretty large part of my life, Coalescence, got a remake that was bigger and better in every way. It really brings tears to me whenever I listen to this.
I dont know if youll ever see this Chris Christodoulou but this is the first piece of music to give me chills and make me tear up. But not from sadness. Just from pure awe in how much raw emotion this makes me feel. Extraordinary.
It reminds me of gentle tears, and a cry of pain. From everything you've been through, and everything you've had to do. A sudden, painful revelation. A scream, at the cruelty of it all. Then silent determination. There's one more step.
2:07 Always makes me feel sad. And will only get sadder from here on out because it is becoming older, a memory to revisit. I find it crazy how this is in 2020 and now we're already in 2022. Time has gone too quickly...And it hits even harder looking back at 2013 Risk of Rain... My childhood. Thank you for this journey and the amount of emotions I've experienced throughout these soundtracks Chris! 😭♥
There is... just such emotion here. Not just in the song but in the song's context for me and my best friend. 7 years. It's been 7 years, nearly a third of my life. I remember in computer class when someone in my class was passing around a flash drive like a sweet doobie and when it came around to me I had a look. It had Risk of Rain on it, of course, and I had seen some of my friends play this and get the absolute shit kicked out of them. I was next in line for the assbeating. I would procrastinate and play a few rounds on the schools laptop during class... i was terrible at the game but I REVELLED in the challenge. Back then, it was like I had blinders on, the world was smaller, less complicated.... then, so much changed in what seemed like such a short time. Girlfriend to wife, job to job, apartment to house... daughter. And after all this time, hearing this song... when I and my friend finally, FINALLY made it to this stage in ROR2, we just stopped, holding our breath, hoping like hell we knew what was coming. The hype was palpable. And when that DROP kicked, I was HURLED back in time, all the layers of complexity I had gathered in those years were ripped away, and suddenly I was there again, in that small classroom, discovering this amazing, unique gem of a game for the first time. At that point, it wasn't about winning or losing. It was about something so much more powerful than the celebration of victory or the sting of defeat. It was the climb. All those twists and turns, the risks we all took since then, and the rain of rewards we had reaped for daring to try. Thank you, you mad genius, for being a part of my life. It's been one hell of a journey so far. I'm popping the teleporter now. See you in the next stage.
My grandfather passed just yesterday morning with no warning or signs that he was going to, and a day later (today), it really set in that he was just, gone, and during that time this was the first song to come to mind while i was thinking about him, so from my heart and soul, Chris Christodoulou, thank you for this amazing song, and thank you for working on Risk of Rain 2, and making its soundtrack the Best damn thing i've heard in a very long time.
Sometimes the music in a sequel just doesn't hit the same way as the original... ...and sometimes it hits even harder. Thank you for your fantastic work on this game, Mr. Christodoulou.
When Risk of Rain 2 was announced, I was holding my breath for Coalescence's eventual remaster. Few years later - today, 1.0 dropped and with it, came this song. I'd made it to the Stage 6. Empty, grey stones of old welcoming me, impossible looking structures guiding me to the final boss. I'd lost for I lacked mobility on my Artificer build, but the long trek up to boss' lair - when I had the initial note being played over and over in electronic piano with accompanying piano chords, that tease... I knew what was coming, but I was NOT ready for the song to be this good. Goddamn. I'm not even upset that I lost to the boss, I just want to get to the stage again so I can hear this very tune, the build up of the pianos > acoustic > electric with drums... This isn't just music. It sets the tone and accompanies you till your eventual defeat or victory. 7 years it had been, and my expectation has been met with something even superior and grander. Thank you for doing this song a justice and then some, because I reckon I'll never stop listening to this song. And also for uploading the song along with the game's launch!
Lol that "Happy now?" Never seen the notifications used like that. I love that you put edits into these, when ost videos are normally a still image the whole way through. Its a nice touch!
That's it, you've forced my hand Chris. I'm learning guitar to specifically play this song aggressively at my friends. Look at what you have done. Unironically this has got to be one of my favorite tracks in gaming history, and i actually did learn this song on guitar lol. I would've never thought a music box would hit so different with metal guitars involved. The way you mix all the different instuments so seamlessly to which all of them aren't just background noise and each one gets the spotlight is absolutely marvelous and incredible. Your motif work is as well done as a steak from a 5 star restaurant. The bass work in The Raindrop that Fell to the Sky is very subtle and very crispy like KFC. The amount of emotion and feeling in every song is just insanity, and the fact that you keep well in touch with your community is just a cherry on top. all of your songs are great and fit the RoR2 aesthetic so well and everything is still good to listen to on its own if not better. Keep creating and keep being rad as fuck cuz holy shit this game wouldn't be the same without you. Thank you.
@@captain-cool2275 No freaking wonder you got more likes than I did. I literally made my comment years before you did but it's all LIES. I LIED to CHRIS CHRISTODOULOU about my experience. Because of YOU!!! How DARE you share me this song without giving me a chance to listen to it blindly in the game?! Why must you hurt me and make me deceive in this way?!
this song, over the course of a year, still brings tears to my eyes. sheer beauty behind chaos, knowing at the end of each attempt to escape, the amount of death and violence it took. That last section of the song, the silencing of your own mind as you look back at everything it took to get there, and unspoken yet loud as a canon..."Was it worth escaping?"
Damn bro this song made me unironically air guitar for the first time in my life and I didn't even realize I was doing it until I realized that I had stopped moving in the game. This may genuinely be the best music I've ever heard.
one year later, a fresh installer from buying the dlc with the co-op sale on steam and i can confirm i also did it. looks like this is just how good chris is as a composer
Just wanted to let you know Chris that you've inspired me to truly follow my passion, music production, through all 3 of your amazing soundtracks you've done for hopoo. I can't thank you enough for all the comfort your music has given me throughout the hardest times in my life. You're an absolute legend and I'm never going to stop listen to your music.
Commando ..and so he left, with everything but his humanity. He murmured something, faint, leaning against the body of Providence, and silently nodded. That felt great. He was in pain, and in agony, but that felt great... Enforcer ..and so he left, mutated beyond recognition. He slowly lurched around the enveloping bridge, trying to make out the shapes that passed by. Snatched them out of the air like flies. He stared at his hand, fused into the riot shield, and simply chanted- "I am better this way." Bandit ..and so he left, with his pyrrhic plunder. It sat, gasping in the cargo hold for air, wheezing for one last spoken word, and he watched carefully as it all fell slowly to the ground, finally silent. He enjoyed being a thief, but now came the realization that he could not steal lives and array them in a museum. Huntress ..and so she left, her soul still remaining on the planet. She had hunted the best. She had won. Why was it only empty inside? She tried to gasp in horror, staring at guilt. But it never came, so she sat and waited on the floor. And then came the voices. Engineer ..and so he left, more steel and circuit than man. He stared at the motors around him- or was that him? He stared at the ship around him, and finally felt separated. The cargo hold was in pain... Miner ..and so he left, adrenaline still rushing through his veins. Like fire beating down on a door, he felt his arms slowly detach, his bloodied weapons fall to the ground, replaced by sheer maniacal laughter. Soon came the lust for blood again. Sniper ..and so they left, the sound still ringing in deaf ears. "I wish you could stay," they tried to hack out, but it was useless. So they held each other, and the Sniper slowly shut off the spotter. Finally, tears fell from blind eyes. HAN-D ..and so it left, servos pulsing with new life. Maybe it was the parasite, or maybe the imp, but maybe deep inside the metal lie a simple janitor bot, riding a desecrated ship home. Where was home? Where was home now? And it answered its own question. Mercenary ..and so he left, never to become human again. He stared out of the window, trying to find interest in passing stars. Quickly he swung his sword and the feelings were gone. All he had left was the blade. They will be coming soon. They will be coming soon to rescue him, but all he had left was the blade. Acrid ..and so it left, with a new hunger: to be left alone. Swallowing the putrid blood, it looked back at what was once a god, now writhing in a pool of acid, dying to disease. The hunger was not worth sating, so it went where there is nothing.
CHEF ...And so it left, entirely forgetting its original purpose. What did it do just now? It didn't seem to know. It didn't seem to care. What's done was done. What mattered was what it did next. Whatever that may be...
where did you get these completed character ending titles? Also why was the enforcer mutated? I cant find anywhere which states why. His is the only one which i really dont understand.
Con lentitud ponderosa means with powerful slowness. Describing the EXTREMELY LONG TIME IT TOOK TO DEVELOP THIS GAME! Actually though, it’s a reference to this: “ I thought of a world without memory, without time; I considered the possibility of a language that ignored nouns, a language of impersonal verbs and indeclinable epithets. This is how the days died and the years died, but something similar to happiness happened one morning. It rained, with powerful slowness. ” - quote from Jorge Luis Borges, Argentine poet and short story writer. Translated from Spanish to English
The best part about that poem is, that "it rained, with powerful slowness" has all of those things that he imagined in that language. "It rained"= a personal verv, "powerful" = a declinable epithet, as slowness is usually attributed the adjective of "weak" (its epithet) and "slowness"= noun. Alluring to the absurdity that is a language that is too dry and devoid of meaning
Someone commented on coalescence a long while back, calling it “the sound of realizing there’s blood on your hands.” I feel like this is the sound of realizing the blood on your hands will never wash away.
@Decorous Ice RoR2 endings have a pretty large emphasis on how your player characters change for the worse by the end of their journey, so I always envisioned it as them not really caring about the metaphorical blood on their hands (since it's that of the various creatures they face), until they realize that there's little separation between said creatures _and themselves._ Thus, the blood they see on their hands is very similar to their own.
Risk of rain will always be a tragic story. It tells you about the horrible things we do to stay alive. It doesnt matter how many creatures have to die
I feel that the developers of Risk of Rain 2 receive so much more unfair criticism than others receive for their games, and for seemingly no reason. They are creating almost flawless gameplay so good you'll casually play for hours. They are creating lore and telling stories that give you chills. They are writing music that makes you cry. They are 3 people, and they may have made a few small mistakes, which were then addressed or fixed within two days of 1.0 release.
Blows my mind how entitled some people are. I can understand with a massive triple A company that doesn't fix a bug for months. But 3 people working on this game and keeping it to such a quality and standard meeting every goal they set for themselves you dont see that much at all anywhere.
I think people got so used to the impeccable quality of previous updates, that when there was a small hiccup, it stood out so much and that was all they pushed attention to!
I don't know how PC players are mad at all most console players had to start from scratch because it took the console team 3 months to patch it, so most people on xbox didn't really even play artifacts for real, I got my stuff back because that's how dedicated I was (well you know after it was patched)
@@damienw4958 I feel like that is a subconscious thing--the devs have done an amazing job with... quite literally everything. It does not excuse the immature and unappreciative things that people did. Review bombing because they got a bug that affected about 1/3 of players patched after three days? That's disgusting.
@@damienw4958 the first game was bugged a lot iirc. you could skip the entire last stage using a glitched with the ropes. not to say that it wasn't a high quality game
Me and my friends were playing the game, and wandered to the Primordial Teleporter- knowing the first game, we thought it'd be cool to go to the moon, and so, we did. Once we reached the Moon, the music kicked in. We were all silent, marching on through the map, however, about half way through our march, the drop hit, and each one of us started praising the song-- it was brilliant, the feeling of inspiration and regret all hit, and we all were full of determination. We knew by now it was time... time to finally beat the game. The music had helped this whole area amazingly, without it, the game wouldn't be the same. Thank you so much Chris-- this music actually helps me with my writing majorly-- something about it is so... inspiring.
What does it mean to be 'Coalesence 2'? It could be a song that achieves the scale, intensity, and grandeur of Coalesence. For me, you achieved that all the way back when the game first went into Early Access, with 'Into the Doldrums'. It could also be a song that is simply 'as good' (airquotes, as this is all subjective) as Coalesence. For me, you not only achieved that with 'Into the Doldrums', but 'The Raindrop that Fell to the Sky' and 'The Rain Previously Known as Purple'. It could be a 'sequel' (a callback? something inspired by?) to Coalesence; and for some we have '... con lentitud poderosa'. But-- it also achieves being as fantastic as the original, and it surpasses that sense of scale and greatness. '...con lentitud poderosa' is more than a callback, and more than a sequel. It feels like a parallel; in a realm where Coalesence stood as the perfect finale to Risk of Rain (2013), '...con lentitud poderosa' does the same for Risk of Rain 2 (2020). While this feeling might be hard to properly describe, I suppose the best way to phrase it is that '...con lentitud poderosa' has purpose and soul-- instead of being just something that says "hey, remember this?" Thanks, Chris, for more than just the music. The journey, the experiences, the memories, and now the excitement for whatever you have in store for the future.
Thank you. It's hard to describe how difficult it was to write this track. If I said I spent _years_ thinking how it should be executed, it would not be an exaggeration. Comments such as this make it worth the struggle.
@@AstronautDown Not gonna lie, I teared up a little when I heard this ingame for the first time, holding off from the Bandcamp version because of your own suggestion. though Monsoon was my favorite track of the first game, This is my favorite from the sequel
This has got to be Video Game Theme of the year, if there’s an award for that. I played thru RoR2 for the first time yesterday and when I heard the softer version of this play right before the end credits, I legitimately almost cried. The music, combined with the visuals and the little concluding message as the game fades to black, made for one of the most memorable endings on any game I’ve played. The theme is just perfect. It’s so bittersweet and forlorn and matches the bleak visuals and loneliness of the place. The theme tells Mithrix’s story; that he was a powerful and overzealous being that was betrayed and abandoned by his brother. It really makes me feel remorse for killing him and makes me wish there was another way. I could go on and on, but you killed the music, man. Like its so rare for a game (a run&gun shooter, no less) to get me so emotional and introspective. The music was the number one contributor to the immersion and storytelling. I hope you go on and keep creating masterpieces like this.

Major respect, Chris. Your soundtrack is easily one of the best I've heard in gaming. It's possibly one of the most immersive soundtracks I've listened to, and even outside of the game, it's just brilliant. It must've been a hard task trying to make homages to the first game's soundtrack in ways like this, but you do it masterfully. It's genuinely brilliant.
Thank you, it really means a lot! It was super hard and, more than anyone else, I wanted to do justice to the original score when quoting it. I hope I did.
Wait nvm, just found out it's a song from the first game I wish I had played RoR before this one, and had experienced the same feeling as you guys, with nostalgiia filling my ears...
@@bansheex4563 There's nothing like entering Commencement for the first time and hearing this music play and being reminded of the first game through it and the enemies on that stage. Something I probably wont feel again

I really like how …con lentitud poderosa and Coalescence are basically yin and yang. They are presenting the same thing and yet they are different. Coalescence - Providence's theme, being full of life and wanting for help, just like Providence is. …con lentitud poderosa - His brother's, Mithrix, theme. It starts slow for you to gather thoughts, then bursting with everything that has happened, that you gained over the time. And then you start creating with everything you got, until you finish the creation. Mithrix is that creator. and when he finished his creation then, the music stopped. Mithrix is complete opposite of Providence, yet they are still brothers. And these themes really show that. Truly a work of art.
Holy shit dude, this was the first time a piece of music made me stop playing a game just to take it in. Was on the verge of tears when I first heard it. Bravo man!
What a fine song Chris. The fact that you constantly amaze us with your fantastical music is truly something to behold. Hell, it’s brought some people to tears. Now THAT is amazing. The game aside, we appreciate you and all your music, whether it’s RoR, Deadbolt, D.I.Y., or anything really. Thank you.
Hey Chris, you probably won't ever see this, but this song means so much to me and is so powerful. I'm going to be in Brazil for 2 years and won't be able to listen to music much. Thank you for being such a great composer.
YES. I was thinking the exact same thing. Like... Im imagining someone like the G-man from halflife, The kinda character that is controlling everything from behind the scenes. They reveal themselves and explain that things have gotten out of hand and they are nolonger in control. They explain that the world is going to end and they regret not being able to fix things. They leave, then when the guitar hits the earth starts shaking, everything is falling apart, and the last few humans escape into earth orbit, with nowhere to go and the burning earth below them, they wait. This track will always bring back the memory of my first ever risk of rain 2 playthrough. i had never played the first risk of rain so i had no idea what to expect. Hearing the almost sorrowful piano notes, only for the more upbeat keys to chime in had me roped in, the acoustic guitar kicking in mimicing the higher notes, all leading to that absolute insane climax had me mindblown, i remember as the song peaked IMMEDIATELY opening settings to turn up my music, it drowned out of the voices of my friends in discord as i just sat there in complete awe. this is a track i will always come back to, when im happy or down, no matter what it always just gives me this feeling of complete immersion, like nothing around me matters. not once have i found a track thats just pulled me in so much. Im not sure if you will see this comment in the sea below, but if you do. thank you.
P.S, This was my most listened to song on spotify last year, along with the many others from RoR2, i ventured back into the RoR1 tracks. and managed to end up in your top 0.1% of listeners
coming back to this over a year later, 6 year relationship just ended. music has been my only vice. this has become a comfort track for me. Things arent great now, but theyll build up, theyll get better.
I just entered Commencement 1 hour ago without even knowing that I was going to appear there, it was pure luck. (I'm new to the game.) The large empty halls at the beginning, coupled with the music, gave me chills and I felt terror, because such peace wasn't something I was used to in my 13 hours of gameplay so far. I died just before I managed to land the killing blow on the boss, but god damn, this place makes me want to cry. I never felt so calm, yet so lonely.
I didn't reach commencement until over 40 hours into the game because every time I even got to stage 5 I immediately went to go make more progress on my backlog of artifact codes I had spotted while flying around as acrid since he was my main at the time. When someone told me that taking the normal teleporter in that stage sends you somewhere special, I figured I could put off the rest of the list for a bit. Mithrix never stood a chance since I was still playing on drizzle.
Hey Chris i just want to say i how much i Love the screen changing at around 2:08 . It really shows how far we've come and that everythings been leading up to this.
Chris your Music gives me emotions I cant describe (the good kind), and it is genuinely awesome. I dont know if you still read comments but I cant wait for my ears to be blessed in Risk of Rain Return
This really has to be one of the best songs of the videogames of all history, it's so emotive while sounding ominous but powerful and glorious, but still has a few glimpses of sorrow and melancholy, thanks Chris for all the music you have created, I love each and every song, they're great themes to listen to
There are many songs people say that make them feel a sense of catharsis, but in a way that it becomes therapeutic. There are songs that are so good, that they relieve others of stress, even when the mind is preoccupied with dread, and stress. I’m pretty sure this isn’t the only comment that has said this, but this track is essentially therapy, as it is so good. There is something about 64 beats of piano, followed by continuous supplements of instruments to give a great sense of “power,” but I see it that power as if it was “freedom.” The execution of this song is phenomenal, beautiful, and it’s a track that balances the mood given by the abstract, lunar view of Commencement. This song holds a special place in my heart, and every time I play ROR2, when I reach this level, I make sure to turn the SFX to 0-10%, putting me at risk (no pun intended) to get hit by the Lunar Chimeras just so I can embrace the atmosphere that this track brings. You really have done an amazing job with this game, and this song in particular is my favorite song of all time. I’m not gushing or bluffing to flatter, because I really have felt like this song helped me whenever an emotional conflict was going on. Thank you so much for providing us an amazing soundtrack to an amazing game!
After the teleporter was done charging I was filled with excitement, what could be waiting for me on the other side? As I touched down the first thing that struck me was the room I was in; immense and still, so, so very still. Illuminated by the eerie flames that reflected on the water that had flooded the place I noticed a ramp, a way out. As I made my way up a faint melody played in my mind, familiar but amiss, a welcomed change given the previous emptiness I had found myself in. Light! I could see the white on the other side! I could see this world opening itself to me! And as I approached I saw it, a familiar "friend" making it's way towards me. I understood then the melody I listened to, a comfort at the end of the road for all the pain endured and for all the pain yet to be endured. Closer, ever closer, but as I was about to step outside: silence. I felt I had been abandoned, that the only thing numbing the pain had been taken away from me, much like the rest of what this place has taken from me. And as I passed through the gate and the world opened itself to me it happened, a cathartic explosion of emotions. A realisation of every moment leading up to this, that it had _all_ always lead to this. And that it was finally time to bring it to an end. Thank you for one of the most beautiful moments I've ever experienced and for acknowledging the journey we've been through in the best way possible :)
Well said. Very well said! I love this game. Haven't experienced something so unique in a long time. Coupled with the awesome soundtrack, it is unforgettable.
This song..being a new Risk of Rain 2 player, sent shivers down my spine the moment that guitar kicked in. It brought about a sense of the unknown, of danger, of urgency..and it pushed me forward. This track is one of my favorites, not of the game, but overall as far as music from any game goes.
I had an amazing experience. Me and a few friend were driving during a rainy night, with thunder and dust storms. One of my friends had gone through a recent struggle, and it was a good day to take our mind off of things. We played this song. And... with powerful slowness... It rained.
Everytime I listen to this song, The second that guitar comes in I can't help but see risk of rain as a movie, and this song is the final tribute to one of the survivors who sacrificed themselves to give everyone the time they needed to get the transport ship running. The pure emotion and feeling in the music, it always puts a vision of commando looking over everyone, seeing they are all hurt and exhausted...and he knows what he must do, no matter how many hits he takes, unable to use one of his arms, then a leg, he keeps fighting, to save everyone, to save the people that have saved him countless times, To save his friends. So many different endings and pieces to a scene that just appeared in my head. When a song can do that, you know it is a powerful piece, something that deserves praise. It can truly move you no matter how many times you listen to. Fantastic song as always.
Chris, I have been with RoR since the beginning of the first game. And I can firmly say your music sparked joy into this game, and my life. I found so many great games that I only played cause you did the soundtrack to them. Thank you for all the hard, and outstanding work you put into making music. Your music may be Electric, but your heart sparks more.
Coming back here to say that, your music made me bought the games, had a blast listening to the tracks, and I will buy the soundtracks as soon as I get my hands on more money, thank you Chris for your work.
This is seriously one of the greatest tracks of music to go with a video game I've heard in my entire life. Nothing will compare to the drop of this song looking out on the massive bleak landscape of the moon knowing there's only one thing left to do - you've made something seriously beautiful and I'm glad you've stuck around to see RoR2 through. I wouldn't want to have it any other way. I played RoR1 so long ago and one of the things that stuck with me most was its soundtrack and it's obviously no coincidence that this one sticks with so many of us too. Be proud of this damn masterpiece of a soundtrack, you deserve it :)
I really love this song. When I first heard it on the last stage I was overwhelmed. This huge empty stage accompanied by this music. I already liked the music in the game. The Void Theme was for a long time my favorit track. But ...con lentitud poderosa was the reason I bought the limited edition vinyl and I am super hyped when I'll get it. Thank you for such awesome music!!
Chris I must say, your music is inspiring. The first time I came to the moon it was with my friend and we were experiencing the update day 1, and when I heard this song it gave me chills. It helped me truly realise part of what makes this game beautiful, your music. This game, song and the purple song inspires me to create something that gives others a feeling even close to mine. And I just wanted to thank you for creating such amazing music for an amazing, unforgettable game. Truly a work of art

The creature stood on the edge of the road, a series of horizontal white lines before it.
No, him, it reminded itself. Himself. It'd been a long while since he had needed a term to refer to himself. Petrichor had stripped that from him, the endless massacre, the bodies piled up, sparking husks of destroyed machines that he himself had battered and broken and-
He shook his head, antlers swaying and the phantom arm mounted at his shoulder clenching its violet knife.
Dammit.

When it started showing all of the early access updates at 2:09 I may have teared up just a little. Thank you and the development team for creating this experience, i can't wait to see what the future holds for the game.
Now the fun part, beating it on Monsoon with all the artifacts on....
There's always Eclipse mode.
True. But playing with all the artifacts is quite a different challenge than Eclipse. Not harder, not easier, just different. Honestly I'm most likely going to end up doing both in the future when console is released
Heh... "Tough Times..."

Nerdy that’s not something you should apologize for
I'm in the same boat.

@@cryonunknown5990 and it's just a farewell game because they sold the franchise. RIP Risk of Rain, RIP Hopoo. all dead
There is... just such emotion here.
My grandfather passed just yesterday morning with no warning or signs that he was going to, and a day later (today), it really set in that he was just, gone, and during that time this was the first song to come to mind while i was thinking about him, so from my heart and soul, Chris Christodoulou, thank you for this amazing song, and thank you for working on Risk of Rain 2, and making its soundtrack the Best damn thing i've heard in a very long time.

...and sometimes it hits even harder.

Thank you.

Commando
..and so he left, with everything but his humanity. He murmured something, faint, leaning against the body of Providence, and silently nodded. That felt great. He was in pain, and in agony, but that felt great...
Enforcer
..and so he left, mutated beyond recognition. He slowly lurched around the enveloping bridge, trying to make out the shapes that passed by. Snatched them out of the air like flies. He stared at his hand, fused into the riot shield, and simply chanted- "I am better this way."
Bandit
..and so he left, with his pyrrhic plunder. It sat, gasping in the cargo hold for air, wheezing for one last spoken word, and he watched carefully as it all fell slowly to the ground, finally silent. He enjoyed being a thief, but now came the realization that he could not steal lives and array them in a museum.
Huntress
..and so she left, her soul still remaining on the planet. She had hunted the best. She had won. Why was it only empty inside? She tried to gasp in horror, staring at guilt. But it never came, so she sat and waited on the floor. And then came the voices.
Engineer
..and so he left, more steel and circuit than man. He stared at the motors around him- or was that him? He stared at the ship around him, and finally felt separated. The cargo hold was in pain...
Miner
..and so he left, adrenaline still rushing through his veins. Like fire beating down on a door, he felt his arms slowly detach, his bloodied weapons fall to the ground, replaced by sheer maniacal laughter. Soon came the lust for blood again.
Sniper
..and so they left, the sound still ringing in deaf ears. "I wish you could stay," they tried to hack out, but it was useless. So they held each other, and the Sniper slowly shut off the spotter. Finally, tears fell from blind eyes.
HAN-D
..and so it left, servos pulsing with new life. Maybe it was the parasite, or maybe the imp, but maybe deep inside the metal lie a simple janitor bot, riding a desecrated ship home. Where was home? Where was home now? And it answered its own question.
Mercenary
..and so he left, never to become human again. He stared out of the window, trying to find interest in passing stars. Quickly he swung his sword and the feelings were gone. All he had left was the blade. They will be coming soon. They will be coming soon to rescue him, but all he had left was the blade.
Acrid
..and so it left, with a new hunger: to be left alone. Swallowing the putrid blood, it looked back at what was once a god, now writhing in a pool of acid, dying to disease. The hunger was not worth sating, so it went where there is nothing.
CHEF
...And so it left, entirely forgetting its original purpose. What did it do just now? It didn't seem to know. It didn't seem to care. What's done was done. What mattered was what it did next. Whatever that may be...

Con lentitud ponderosa means with powerful slowness. Describing the EXTREMELY LONG TIME IT TOOK TO DEVELOP THIS GAME!
Actually though, it’s a reference to this:
“ I thought of a world without memory, without time; I considered the possibility of a language that ignored nouns, a language of impersonal verbs and indeclinable epithets.
You know, that poem fits perfectly with what it seems like the creators of these portals and everything else on this planet seem to believe in
wait, so it wasnt google translating the tittle then?
Huh... A few people seem to think so too :) We take English so much for granted...
Wow that's quite beautiful. Thanks for the the reference, friend.
Someone commented on coalescence a long while back, calling it “the sound of realizing there’s blood on your hands.”
I feel like this is the sound of realizing the blood on your hands will never wash away.
I agree!
That, and/or realizing that the blood on your hands _is your own._
@Decorous Ice I think they mean that they metaphorically killed their old selves in the process or something
While this feeling might be hard to properly describe, I suppose the best way to phrase it is that '...con lentitud poderosa' has purpose and soul-- instead of being just something that says "hey, remember this?"
Thanks, Chris, for more than just the music.

Hoping
Either this or the final boss theme from dark souls
@@anchoviesonnachos7074 Final Hours from Majora's Mask for me. That piece is nihilism incarnate, it just screams "this is it, hold your loved ones and prepare for the end"
It still amazes me how you made an absolute banger of a soundtrack in the first Risk of Rain
and then you just did it again, I love it
Glad you enjoy it! I'm sometimes amazed I made the soundtrack to ROR2 at all...
@@AstronautDown That's funny to me because the soundtrack for the first game left me with surprise that it was better than the gameplay, and I went into the second game with the same expectation, and yet it was still exceeded. And I really don't think that's any kind of coincidence the more I think about it...
Thanks for sharing your experience! And for listening :)
coming back to this over a year later, 6 year relationship just ended. music has been my only vice.
this has become a comfort track for me. Things arent great now, but theyll build up, theyll get better.
I just entered Commencement 1 hour ago without even knowing that I was going to appear there, it was pure luck. (I'm new to the game.)
The large empty halls at the beginning, coupled with the music, gave me chills and I felt terror, because such peace wasn't something I was used to in my 13 hours of gameplay so far.
Lonliness is the calmest thing one'll ever experience.
Thank you for your support! Just a handful of new pieces incoming for RORR but I hope you enjoy them :)
@@AstronautDown there's NEW MUSIC?? must buy for sure even if it's the composer equivalent of a quick karaoke sesh in the shower
This really has to be one of the best songs of the videogames of all history, it's so emotive while sounding ominous but powerful and glorious, but still has a few glimpses of sorrow and melancholy, thanks Chris for all the music you have created, I love each and every song, they're great themes to listen to
I can't listen to this song at work anymore because 2:08 causes me to tear up, dammit. Well done as always, such an incredible track.
Apologies for the inconvenience :)
holy shit, coalescence 2.0 is real and it's INCREDIBLE
thank you for such an amazing soundtrack chris, it's just as good as ever
There are many songs people say that make them feel a sense of catharsis, but in a way that it becomes therapeutic. There are songs that are so good, that they relieve others of stress, even when the mind is preoccupied with dread, and stress.
I’m pretty sure this isn’t the only comment that has said this, but this track is essentially therapy, as it is so good. There is something about 64 beats of piano, followed by continuous supplements of instruments to give a great sense of “power,” but I see it that power as if it was “freedom.”
The execution of this song is phenomenal, beautiful, and it’s a track that balances the mood given by the abstract, lunar view of Commencement.
Got to the moon and my jaw hung open the entire time thanks to this song. It fits with everything and will forever be one of my favourite pieces
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience, it's beautiful
Well said. Very well said!
I love this game. Haven't experienced something so unique in a long time. Coupled with the awesome soundtrack, it is unforgettable.
Goddamn poetic.
My thoughts exactly
I wasn't expecting to be astral projected directly to God's doorstep but man this song has me floating in a space unnamed and untraveled
Thank you so much! I am proud indeed :)
You're very welcome!
Accidentally discovered this absolute gem a while back on Spotify, and it still gives me shivers when the beat drops.
Thank you for making such a masterpiece
Great to know! Thanks for listening!
I can literally FEEL my soul ascending into the heavens at 3:20. Beautiful. Powerful. Amazing.
