Simple observation: you're possibly the best essayist going in this modality. Writing, production, execution, delivery. All pitch-perfect. As a career IT pro, sure. Apple make fine (if over-priced) kit. But you're a singular talent in a sea of Apple users. Carry on the brilliant work.

It's nice that you're so thankful that Apple has artists in mind with their equipment and surely they appreciate the 5-star review! Coincidentally, 1984 was when I was able to buy a GUI capable OS for my Radio Shack Colour Computer. What a fantastic year! MTV, the Mac, epic Olympics, BBC's Spitting Image, Tetris... what a year.

Great tribute, Mary. I was in IT my whole career (40 years). I started out in a very large IBM Mainframe organization that supported about 6,000 employees. Every one of my co-workers were IBM hardware and software trained. I was not. When Lisa's and Macs first showed up in our VP's office, no one wanted to touch them. Me, being not totally stupid, jumped at the chance to learn, support and teach others how to use their computers. Best decision ever!
Apple changed my life through a totally different path, but that is the beauty of what they did for everyone.

I’m an IT guy and a musician. I’ve held all kinds of Microsoft certificates, have an undergraduate and masters in CS, and I love Mac. The (mostly) guys I work with think I’m crazy, with my Mac, MacBook, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, etc. I try to tell them it’s far superior and explain the technical and not so technical (ease of use) reasons, but they scoff at me.
So I use my Mac’s and love them. I recorded a couple of albums to 1” tape in the early 1990s, and I just decided to go all in to record the 50 or so songs I’ve written in the last decade. I bought Logic Pro, a UA interface, some monitors, microphones, downloaded some midi patches for my keyboard and got my Kemper sounding good in Logic.
I still need to find a drum solution (not a drummer), but along with being a guitarist, I play bass, Keys and sing. Wish me luck :)

After being a PC owner for many years, I've owned two Macbook Pros - both 15". The first was stolen, the second suffered not one, but three motherboard failures (all replaced by Apple) until it became a Legacy item and no longer available. A great piece of (overpriced) hardware, but I decided that I wanted to have control over what hardware I was using, and not be dictated to and locked into the Apple system. I returned to PC and haven't looked back.
I love your channel and I love your passion. Incidentally, I'm old enough to have seen the first example of the Macintosh on a friends office desk when I was in my thirties 😁
    Keep up the great work.

I was a long term Apple person (over 25 years) who left Apple and went to PC in 2017 when Apple quit supporting my Apple hardware that was 5 or 6 years old and required me to buy new hardware. The new Apple hardware had extremely low amount of memory like 16 gb and 512GB SSD were my PC has 64 GB with 32 tb of disk space at 1/3 the cost. I am a graphic designer and photographer and need the storage and the ram space. The Apple Mac Books are Ok for doing office work at 2x to 3x the cost. I supper glad I switched as my hardware lasts a lot longer with Microsoft OSs and I can upgrade my current PC hardware with newer stuff.

I'm a Mac user and just a simple thing like being able to drag a recording from Voice Memos into Notes and immediately having it available on both my phone and desktop has revolutionized my songwriting. It's allowed me to create a workflow that plays extremely well with my ADHD and has made me very productive. I remember having to carry around a notebook full of scribbled lyrics with chord changes over them, just hoping that I remember the melody to the one song that I'm currently writing. Now, I can easily record any stray melodic fragment that pops into my head, drag it into my In Progress folder with the changes written above it and have it with me whenever I'm inclined to work on it. I currently have over 200 recordings in that folder, more than 20 in another folder with completed music and lyrics in various stages, and all of my finished songs sorted into past and future releases. I can work on whatever unfinished song happens to grab my ear at the moment without having to remember anything. I turned 11 of them into finished songs within the last two months of last year. I couldn't have imagined being able to write that quickly back in my notebook days.

Lately, I've written a few songs while driving. I used to sing and Lyricize (is that a new word 🙂?) in my car, but I would inevitably forget tunes and lyrics before I got the chance to play and write down. Now I use voice memo to record bits and pieces of a budding project and what a difference it has made.

I started on an Apple II plus in the early 80’s. In my journey over the years because of my employment has taken me back and forth between Apple and PCs. I would describe it as going back and forth between an axe and an a saw to cut a piece of wood. They can both get the job done, but one is always easier to use and gives me a better product. When given a choice, I will always use an Apple product. 1984 wasn’t like 1984. Happy Birthday Macintosh.

Sorry Mary, I can't get on board with this one. There is little (if anything) that you can do on a Mac that you can't do on a PC. All it boils down to is user preference: Fender or Gibson?

    • @IanBoccio
      @IanBoccio 4 месяца назад +1

Sure, that’s true now, but I think Mary’s point is that Apple revolutionized computer technology for artists with the creation of the modern GUI 40 years ago. Windows was developed entirely as a response to the massive success of the Mac. The technology was right there at Xerox, but it took the vision of Jobs and Wozniak to implement it in a way that transformed the relationship between humans and computers. Gates missed the boat on that one and Microsoft has been playing catchup ever since.

Exactly. It boils down to user preference. On my gaming PC I have to set aside at least 10-15 minutes every time I need to play my games for updating drivers, telling Windows no I don't want version 11 just yet, today Steam told me it couldn't launch because of "system failure x3YY2451mpV" or something. I truly enjoy gaming on my PC, but my Mac never does this. I only use my PC for gaming. Everything else I can do on my Mac without the hassle.
Guess what my preference is? 😉

“With my guitar I can sing for my supper, with my Mac I can sing for the whole world” - poetry! Love it Mary Spender!!! As a nerdy tech who loves music, it’s great to see how technology has developed and enables you and other musicians and content providers to share your creativity with the world. It is good to hear about the good that technology brings. I personally would be lost without my iPad for all the creative, techie, practical and every day life tasks. And right now it has the means by which I watch RUclips and reach out to you. Great words and great video. I admire how you have taken on the role of musician, content creator, interviewer, etc., etc., etc and can sing for the whole world, yet be humble enough to acknowledge the tools that make it possible. Nice one!

One of the things that the GUI did was it unified the user interface for applcations. Prior to the GUI you had to have a manual for your new word processor or spreadsheet or paint application. There was a unification effort put forth by Apple for elements such as copy/paste as standard key commands. As well as the application menu at the top left followed by file and edit and then at the far right window and help. And these elements just scratch the surface of the UI unification that Apple led the charge with. By doing this, Apple made disparate applications much, much easier for new users to approach and become productive with and not requiring them to attend a class or read a large manual before they could be productive. That's a HUGE benefit that the GUI gave us.

I'm glad you are saying this. I got my first Mac to get me through college in 1987. When I became the IT person at my school I had to hear all the complaints about Macs, too expensive, too proprietary, too easy, not secure enough etc. when I introduced them to the school. They only allowed them in the classrooms for students. The NYC DOE to this day use PCs for most administrative functions but the world has embraced these machines and the ideas behind them. I have been using my Macs for creative endeavors ever since I started and I am grateful to the Apple team for the good work they have done to enable us to express ourselves all over the world.

The one thing I would add to all this is my point of view: I worked for years on PC, both audio editing (as a Product Manager) and music composition software (as a composer/producer) and I got really tired of jumping through hoops to extract the best performance of my PCs, installing drivers, checking for hardware interrupts (those were the days), and typing sh*t up in the registry... and worst of all: rebooting after each change. Always rebooting.
Then Apple bought Logic, and I had to switch to Mac, and those days of headaches were gone, just like that. Plug and play was a lie: it applies most to Macs, not to PCs. No drivers needed, just plug and record, and play. Sure, once in a while, I'd have to buy a dongle adapter or two - but again: plug and play, or if I want to be facetious, pay, plug and play.
This peace of mind, is what Macs have brought to me, and then with the iPhone, and iCloud, the reliability of the ecosystem. It's not exactly priceless - it's not cheap - but you get what you pay for.
This is longer than I intended, but the TL;DR of it is: sticking with Logic and switching to Mac spared me a ton of headaches down the road, and that's a benefit that's often overlooked.

Low cost computer, ROFL I go back to those early days the first mouse I ever laid my hands on was a Apple Lisa computer. Part of what killed the Lisa was how crazy expensive it was. What help sell a few Apple Lisa's was to write programs for the soon to come out Macintosh you had to use a Apple Lisa. Even after the Mac came out for awhile you to write code for the Mac you needed to use a Apple Lisa. Then the original Mac came out and it was expensive compared to all the other personal computers of the day. I read an article yesterday about the original Mac and if you adjust the dollar then to the dollar now the original Mac was $7000. That isn't a low cost computer. The Apple II was a reasonable cost computer but Jobs Mac was all about profit margins. So low cost was not in Jobs vocabulary ever.

At last there was a proper OS and, although there were still GUI fails, it worked really well. A few years later, I bought a used MacBook Pro which needs to be upgraded to a M2 machine.
I still use Windows and Linux machines for the serious stuff though as, until the M series, were faster and have always been better bang for the buck.

OMG -- 40 year anniversary!! Holy moly, I purchased my first computer in 1981 -- an IBM PC (one of the first ones)
Thank you Mary -- I feel REALLY OLD now
Yes, I grew up in a time when TV's only had three channels (plus PBS -- but no one watched that chanel)
    Stereo was just invented
Man landed on the moon (I stayed home from school that day to watch the landing live)
The most wonderful 'across the pond' lady was not even a glint in her mothers eyes.
I can remember the Apple 2 computer -- well before the MAC.
I have to go find a pub now and raise a glass to us old timers....
ps -- this is one of the best channels that makes me think.
    Thank you Mary

One of the first computers i ever used was a black and white mac (the other being an Amiga), I remember when my dad brought home an IBM from work and he was showing off how it had this fancy thing called a 'hard drive' where i could store things on permanently and didn't have to switch out floppy disks constantly when changing programs or saving files.

I've been using Macs since 2012. I've never been as productive as I have been with Macs and my first iMac was the one that kicked the door open back in 2011 and I've still got it and although its not my front line recording tool any more, its still usable. I know of no PC that age that could do that.

I use Apple computers since G3 (that's mid 2000s), and since then all our studio computers were macs. It is definitely a tool for creativity, durable and intuitive at the same time, you can rely your work will not be interrupted with driver popups. It is far from perfect, and really good Windows computers can be equally functional, I know - some Apple laptops were really poorly designed (like that white plastic Macbook 2010) but all in all, for a musician/producer/studio, Apple machines are an absolute tech gift. The entire ecosystem is cool too.

One of the few genuinely complimentary pieces on the Mac that I've come across in recent years, and I couldn't agree more. I bought my first (a Mac Plus) in 1990, and on a divorced teacher's salary, it was a big expense, but I've upgraded from time to time since, and whatever model I've been using has personified those three words: ease • of • use. It helped me teach history, run faculty meetings, play the songs I was trying to learn, write half a dozen books, process thousands of photos, and otherwise enabled me to live in the modern world instead of degenerating into a curmudgeonly old man, resentful of my fellow humans who seemed more in tune with modern life. Well said, Mary, and thank you!

I couldn't agree more, since my first (1999 tangerine iMac) there have been 6... but my 2012 MacBook Pro is going so strong (if a little slow) that only last week was an M2 MacBook Pro purchased to supersede it. I don't know of, let alone know anyone, who has a twelve year-old laptop that can still run CAD and video editing software without driving them crazy. That 2012 machine travelled all around the world with me several times, and saw something like a dozen employer-provided laptops come and go. Nothing beats a Mac, and nothing lasts like a Mac, because nothing else IS a Mac!

Great video! I spent so much time with editing / adjustments etc. on my old Linux configuration and with the Mac everything just works. Linux works perfect but so often I needed help to make it work again. Every update was a risk. And since I changed to Mac it's just playing drums because the recording with Logic just works perfect every time! 🤘🤘🤘

And there it was. In the back of the Letraset catalogue. The Mac II. I was Creative Director of a small advertising agency in the Thames Valley and we saw a demo in the Apple Store, Uxbridge and bought one with a printer. 1988. Blimey. The OS still functions basically the same way as I type this on my 27" iMac. Never been a day without a Mac since that time. Nice one Mary! x

Oh yeah, I came over to the bright side in 2005, switching a Dell 2" thick laptop for a G4 Powerbook with Tiger OS. I relaxed and got soaked into a new world. It's still a joy to use my Mac every day. I could deliver a rant or two about pricing and configurations of these new M3s but hey, it's my choice as a consumer to buy or not. I'm enjoying the system and the UI and I'm gladly paying for it. To the PC people who _always_ have to comment 'cause they feel targeted, yes. A well configured PC is a beast, albeit constantly in the need of tinkering, taking care of it, and you just don't have that on a Mac. That's it.

It's personal obviously, but 5 yeara ago I bought a macbook and after 4 weeks almost threw it out the window and smashed it. Many keys are counterintuitive, the ports have disappeared, installing office was a nightmare and I was constantly caught up in passwords... I'm so glad they exist to break the MS monopoly, but for me, MS makes my life so much easier... sad to say.
