    Geordi genuinely actually changed the course of history based on his incredibly diplomatic, open, and caring approach to every single organism, organic or otherwise, that he interacts with. By simply being caring, open, and thoughtful to everyone, even the cold uncaring enemy he's at war with, he made a friend of that enemy and caused said enemy to fracture the Borg collective for the betterment of the whole universe. He arguably even potentially offered the Borg collective as a whole a path to salvation. By introducing individuality to the collective he made it possible for them to question their own actions and some of the Borg to potentially redeem themselves and grow into something more than just a destructive all consuming force.

    The fact that Geordie was supposed to plant a virus inside Hugh and send him back to the Borg mothership, basically just using him as a weapon to destroy his own race, makes Geordie's guilty looking reaction at the end, when Hugh says that they are friends, that much more powerful. Great episode this.

    • @spartan456
      @spartan456 4 года назад +28

      The best part about it is, IIRC, the virus didn't really end up working. However, the Borg Collective still ended up falling apart because Hugh's newfound knowledge of individuality began taking hold and caused the entire Collective to split apart. This episode is filled with many small moments like this that eventually lead to the collapse of the entire Collective, and that's just really cool. Like, you wouldn't think talking to someone about friendship or names or whatever is really that important. But to someone, it might be.

Generalizing kills. It’s the greatest source of power in the universe, the most dangerous weapon out there, and the ultimate nullifier of everything. Man, I wanna say that Star Trek TNG did a great job at making Borg Hugh(Designation Third of Five) as adorable as possible. From his much friendlier design to his squishable, puppy dog eyes and innocent face, they intentionally designed him and his character to arouse sympathy.
    I do also love how Captain Picard reacts to the news that they've named him Hugh. "You're not supposed to name it. If you name it, you start getting attached to it. Now put that thing back where it came from, or so help me--"

    Actually they did assimilate Klingons at Wolf 359 and in the Star Trek elite force comic they did assimilate the leader of the Voyager Elite force who was black...Also they assimilated Tuvok once...and Bel Enna.

    I could never figure out this scene. They're having a conversation about how abhorrent assimilating other cultures to learn about them is, while Geordie is slowly converting Hugh from a Borg drone into an individual and using that burgeoning individuality to learn about the Borg. I get thematically what the scene is about, but for me, it muddies the issues more than anything else.

    • @BladeOfLight16
      @BladeOfLight16 7 лет назад +1

      It's _supposed_ to be muddied. That's kind of the point: to make you ask questions and think stuff through.
      That said, no one ever coerced Hugh to do or think anything. All they did was expose him to their own way of thinking; Hugh embraced it by his own choice.

    Actually I think you never wtached star trek carefully? ;) Drones dont need..well, even mustn´t know what individuality is. They dont have a mind of their own. If they had the knowledge, why should they stil "want" to be Borg? They dont have a chance to decide, individuality its taken from them when they are assimilated into the collective.

    • @chrisfox7034
      @chrisfox7034 7 лет назад +2

      Some Drones actually have decided to return to the collective, like Hugh, and even some for the reason that they enjoy it. For people assimilated as children the desire is stronger. The Borg is all they've known, the voices are comforting, the life is methodical and safe, and all their needs are taken care of. They have never had choice, so choice can overwhelm them and scare them. They feel insecure with themselves, etc.

    let the borg know what having sexual thoughts is like I bet you they would want some privacy now.

    • @chrisfox7034
      @chrisfox7034 7 лет назад

      As I said in another comment - they view sexuality as irrelevant. This can be seen with Seven of Nine having to go through so much work to learn about sexuality, intercourse, gender communication, etc. Freshly liberated borg are likely asexual as the collective has stripped them of any desire like that for so long - possibly forever.
