I love the sound of your voice. 😊 Thank you for all the hard work you do to bring us these videos. "My Little Margie" was a show I watched. Curious if there were bloopers in any of those episodes.
Thanks, there were probably some goofs that made it to the final cut, but a lot of the blooper outtakes they didn't put in to shows are lost to time, but I keep looking for those too. I appreciate it. I haven't seen that show in years though. I believe it used to come on cable for a time. I'll have to watch it again. The 50s and 60s was a great time for television.
When Joseph Kearns died,he was replaced by Gale Gordon, who played George Wilson's younger brother John. The irony was Gordon bore a much stronger resemblance to the comic strip character than Kearns did.
Actually, character actor, Roy Roberts was more like the comic strip George Wilson. But he may not have displayed the degree of over the top frustration and pompousness that Joseph Kerns gave the character. Likewise, Mildred Natwick resembled Martha, and could have been good in the part.
Love your videos! No clickbait avatars or titles. Just well made, interesting and entertaining. That's getting rare with these types of videos on RUclips. Joseph Kearns was perfect as Mr. Wilson. Dennis the Menace was great until Gale Gordon took over. Not that he's not great in his other roles, but it just didn't work with him, and the writing got progressively worse after that. Also, Jay North outgrew his role very quickly, making the episodes all that much more implausible. But in spite of all that it was watchable, just no where near as good as Season One. Fun Fact: In the first season Dennis got into trouble with things like deceiving his parents and doing things he shouldn't behind their backs. The censors told the producers that they will have to tone it down because they didn't want little kids watching, to get any bad ideas. They did so, and it changed the tone of the series after that. I think the first season stands up well even today, more so than every one after that.
@@tvcrazymanthat’s kind of scary. I’m a year older than that thank God I don’t look that old. Maybe they just naturally age faster in the twilight zone
Good video, tvcrazyman👍 I've never seen this Dennis the Menace show, but it looks funny for its time. I grew up with the cartoon from the late 80's and the 90's live action movie.
I appreciate it. I was watching the original show in re-runs sometime in the 80s for the first time. I vaguely remember there being a cartoon. The 90's movie I remember was hilarious!
In the first/pilot episode he's very mischievous, a bit of a trouble maker. But the rest of the series paints him much more innocent. Everything he does wrong is just an accident. He never intends to do wrong.
@@Robert08010 There were letters of complaint by PTA groups about Dennis defying his parents and sneaking out of the house to see a movie that his parents were seeing. That was the pilot that was filmed in 1958. The second episode was filmed nearly a year later, which explains why Dennis grew so quickly in one week!
Another fact that is more trivial than significant, but I think it's cool: Herbert Anderson (Mr. Mitchell) seemed almost like a twin to UAW president Leonard Woodcock. The first time the 14-year-old political issue junkie me saw Leonard Woodcock being interviewed on network TV in the early '70s, I thought, he looks just like Mr. Mitchell!
Mr. Wilson (Joseph Kearns) replacement Gale Gordon liked to occasionally say "Great Caesar's Ghost!" just like Perry White, editor and chief at the Daily Planet. Coincidence? I think so.
@@tvcrazyman In this series I liked Joseph Kearns better but only because he played a frail character who was more vulnerable to Denis's energy. On the other hand, I think this was some of Gale Gordon's best work. On the Lucy show, he was little more than a storm cloud for Lucy to react to. But he hardly ever showed any emotion other than rage. He never got to show any depth. On Denis The Menace, he got to emote. He seemed far more like a real person.
I had a cat when I was a kid that came when I called it and my sister has a cat that comes when called. They know your voice and assume you have food or treats for them. Every cat we ever had when I was a kid came running when the electric can opener was used.
There for a while I would give her chicken water from canned chicken, but it got to be too big a hassle every time I got some chicken out she wanted the water and screamed at me. It was the sound of the can opener that clued her in.
If you review the episodes right after Joseph Kearns died, I think its the second episode, there is a shot where you can easily see Jay North has been crying and did not want to be there. Its unmistakable and its very sad. Did he just find out Mr Kearns died while filming? Its an episode where Mr Quigley is coaching a baseball team I think. There's another scene, the first between him and Gale Gordon where they tell the story that George Wilson moved back east and it looked as though that was not an easy scene to get through either. I felt especially bad for Sylvia Field since she lost the part simply due to the story that George moved east. She looked and sounded a lot like an great aunt I had so I was especially fond of her.
Grass :: a slamg term for marijuana. This came up in an episode I just happen to tune into on Nickelodeon, I don't know what lead up to the scene, but Mr.Wilson just took a hit off his pipe, and he angerley announced "Great Scott, , I'm smoking grass!" Like i mentioned, I'm not sure what led up to it, but, I think Dennis & Joey accidentally dropped Mr.Wilson's tabaco on the lawn, so they supplemented it with lawn clippings 😅
I always thought that both actors who played Mr. Wilson were older than they were since Mr. Wilson seemed to be retired and men at that time usually retired at age 65, so I assumed the actors were that old since they looked it.
I thought Mr. Wilson was 65 at least or older. I guess, he may have been trying to look and act older for the part. A person's actions can make them come across as older as much as looks I guess.
My favorite episode is when Dennis finds Confederate currency in a soldier's jacket and tries to spend it. I understand Jay North was mistreated by his guardian aunt who disciplined him harshly if he flubbed his lines. While doing the show, he was interviewed on some tv host who came to his house (I believe it was Jack Linkletter). He had a small boat and they asked him to paddle around in the pool. I still remember how he didn't smile and how unhappy he looked; now I can understand why.
The same day the Dennis the Menace comic strip premiered in the US another unrelated comic strip called Dennis the Menace premiered in the UK totally by coincidence.
You downplayed the terrible truth about Jay being beaten each night by his legal guardian aunt, with whom he lived while filming the episodes. That was a horrible experience and made him a very angry adult. It's great that Jay faced the issue bravely and has learned to heal.
Reading you comment reminded me; I remember going to DQ when I was about 8 and I was supposed to say "Scrumpt-didily-isous" to get some sort of discount but I clammed up, I wouldn't say it.
You mentioned Ron Howard "crossing over" to Denis The Menace. Were you aware that Billy Booth (Tommy) got a small part on The Andy Griffith Show? I just saw the episode a few days ago. Aunt Bee laments why don't we invite my cousin for a visit, the cousin and her husband arrive with 3 or 4 kids in toe. One of the kids was played by Billy Booth although I don't think he had any lines at all. Season 5 Episode 3, The Family Visit.
I enjoyed watching your profile on DENNIS THE MENACE. The comic strip was my favorite. Regarding Popeye becoming a Public Domain character, that is not entirely true. The original version appearing in the 1929 THIMBLE THEATER comic strip has become a Public Domain image. But the established character design, Copyright and Trademarks after 1929 are still in place. Just as the 1928 version of Mickey Mouse fell into The Public Domain last year, that did not mean the Mickey Mouse is in the Public Domain yet.
Maybe Mr. Wilson was supposed to say the penny was dated 1942 and flubbed it. Or maybe it was an old European penny that had been brought over by Columbus in 1492.
Did you realize that Ron Howard, who later played Opie Taylor on the Andy Griffith show, was a friend of Dennis' in a few episodes and that in a few episodes, there was a repairman with the name of Opie? Coincidence? There was also a police sergeant on the series, named Sergeant Mooney, and that Gale Gordon who came in after Joseph Kernes passed away, played Mr. Mooney on the Lucy Shows? Believe it, or not!
1492 penny? In fact the English silver penny goes back to the 8th century. So yes, there was a silver penny with the likeness of Henry VI minted in the late 15th century.
Had love Dennis the Menace back in the day 😀
Yeah, that show has a lot of laughs, especially watching Mr. Wilson.

What's unbelievable was that Joseph Kearns was only 55 when he passed away, which was during the show's run. He looked much older than that!
