    Hi, Joseph, I am rethinking my workflow in case I will switch to BMD Pocket Cameras and using a ATEM...as they mentioned to record in to the camera or HD in 4K during streaming and also record the ISO`s on attached HD to the ATEM...I am asking my self how I can get the TC set to all the recorded files...I use Tentacle to jam the Pocket 4/6K so they have all TC on the recorded files in the camera...the Soundrecorder has also a Tentacle on extra Track, so that’s all in sync...but is there a hint how to get the TC in to the ATEM ISO’s? The easiest way would be if the Cameras delivering the TC on one of the stereo tracks to the ATEM. One channel scratch audio and the other TC...would that work...will each camera write their own audio in to the ISO"s and will be there a delay or not? As I saw many discussions but no solution I thought it would be interesting to ask you as a master of all this things...

Would you please explain if this is possible to sync Ninja V with Connect to Ultrasync Blue via RF? That's how it is advertised, but doesn't seem to be possible for me. I can only sync via blutooth (which is of course not the best) and in fact it useless because there so approx 11 second offset even if devices seem to be connected and synced.

      The AtomX Sync is, as far as I know, ONLY compatible with the Ninja V. But the all have the same battery mount so it’s worth asking ATOMOS if that’s something that could be added. I don’t know. If the Inferno has a timecode input like the Shogun, then you can just connect an UltraSync ONE to it, but I don’t believe that it does. If not, then unfortunately the GH5 doesn’t have timecode input, so your only option would be an UltraSync ONE and the timecode-on-audio solution.

But even if it does, keep in mind that it won't be super accurate, because the camera doesn't have a crystal in it. To keep the time code super accurate, you need an external box connected at all times.

      LUMIX cameras can be synced to time-of-day with an iPhone or android device. However if they will be perfectly frame accurate to each-other is another question, and I'd say "no". Also once you sync a camera, it is relying on its internal clock which is not as accurate as a quartz crystal so even if you managed perfect sync, it would drift. If "close to right" is good enough, then yes. If frame accurate is what you need, then you need actual timecode sync hardware.

  • @ToastofNorway

    Hi Joseph, I have a Ninja V with the sync module that is connected to my Zoom F6 via Bluetooth. I also have 2 TentacleSync e units. Unfortunately the Tentacle sync is not something I can use with the directly with the Atomos Ninja V and the sync unit, because they use different Bluetooth protocols. And Atomos is of course not interested to implement a competitor tc sync system after they acquired Time code systems.
    But I have learned that I could jam the timecode from the Zoom f6 into the Tentacle Sync e through a special cable. The cable that I have bought is the TENTACLE BODYPACK Y-ADAPTER CABLE. But as it has 3 ends not sure what ends to connect to the Zoomf6 and the Tentacle sync.
    The thing I want to achieve is to use Both the Ninja V master TC into the F6 and then jam the TC from the f6 into the Tentacle Sync units.
    Any experience with these devices?

    Is there a way to do this with the ATEM Mini Pro being the master? This way, I won't have to look into Blackmagic specific cameras? I'd especially love to get this working with a GoPro (with automatic record when the "Record" command is sent from the ATEM Mini Pro to the cameras, since a refresh of the micro cinema camera - with the Mini Pro direct support - is looking extremely unlikely), since that would make for a great aerial kind of shot.

    • @photojoseph

      This doesn’t integrate into live production, other than you could record ISOs of your live show and ensure they were in sync for post. I’m not sure what you’re trying to do. The timecode offset doesn’t shift the video/audio; it shifts the timecode embedded in it so they line up in post.

    Hello Joseph, great work as always!!!
    I'm very disappointed that many cameras have build in timecode (like my sony A73 and A7S3) but it seems there is no way to sync this timecode with other devices. TC makes only sense if multiple devices synced to the same source, so I absolutely do not understand why sony implement TC in the camera with no option to sync to another source (like my zoom audio recorder) and I have to buy another device to record TC the audio channel? There are so many options to offer some sort of sync (use the mic input, bluetooth, use the app, the usb port, ....). Or do I miss something? Or what is the use case if you have multiple cameras each with it's own timecode?
    Today I use a hand clap to sync the different sources which works pretty well if the number of clips is not to high but as you mentioned in the video there are other situations and any help would be very much appreciated to improve the post editing process.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  2 года назад

      Timecode in-built in cameras can normally be output over HDMI. I don’t used Sony but it’s hard to imagine it wouldn’t. Then, your Zoom audio recorder likely has an HDMI input specifically for timecode. That will allow capture of the TC and possibly triggering start/stop recording on the Zoom as well. FYI if you join the channel as a member you will have access to a private Discord server which could be a good place to ask questions, and of course you’ll be helping support the channel! This would be a great topic there. Details at RUclips.com/PhotoJoseph/join. Oh and for syncing multiple cameras, you generally need external TC. The BGH1 and BS1H have a single TC IN/OUT port so you could sync TWO cameras to each other that way, but that’s it. Any more and you need external TC

    Will the AtomX Sync also work for multicam live things? Let's say you have cameras with different HDMI delay, could it sync them all up so the output of each Ninja V is synced? Or is this just for actual recordings?
    In my case, I have 4 different cameras, each with a Ninja V... I have an Sony FS700 that has about 3-4 frames more delay than the others, so it's useless for live use. Could the AtomX Sync solve this issue?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  4 года назад

      ah, clever thinking, but no, unfortunately. The devices can’t shift the video / audio, they just shift the timecode so it all lines up in post. So for example, if you have audio in realtime, and a camera that’s 6 frames delayed, then if you looked at the timecode on the devices while recording, they would be 6 frames apart. That way when brought into the NLE, the all line up properly.

    so i am close to getting the connects since the atomx syncs are not available but before I do, I have a question. In my testing, I have a bs1h and a s1H. Set the bs1h to be the timecode out and s1h to tc in. I am seeing on my bs1h it is the same timecode between the bs1h, s1h and each ninja on my cameras. I linked the cameras with a bnc cable from the bs1h to the s1h. Is this a possible "budget solution" since I record sit down interviews almost never go past an hour? If I opt for the ultrasync 1 instead of the connect, is there a way to have accurate timecode with this signal chain: TC out of Ultrasync 1-> TC in BS1H-> TC over hdmi to Ninja and duplicate setup for the S1H? Does the ninja v have to have a dedicated TC device or is TC over hdmi fine? DO I need to calibrate to the ninja TC for latency over hdmi? Thanks!!!!!!!!!! Also plan to add a zoom f3 in the mix and I guess an f2 so my devices can work with TC via the ultrasync1 or the blue if that is a good option. Thanks!!

      @ChrisFlores22 if you get the connect, that has Bluetooth built in so you don’t need a blue as well. It costs more but it does a LOT more. Both Ninjas. Every device needs to have a Sync device, and any one of them can be the master. The Ninja V is small and doesn’t have a BNC Timecode input like the Shogun does, so this is a way to add it. Plus by using the Ninja V as the master, you control all your options on a big screen, not on the tiny screen that’s on the little Sync devices. For Timecode to truly be accurate, every device needs a dedicated timecode controller. The GH5S in this demo is the odd-man-out. Because it just reads the timecode once, it will drift, as explained in the video. I’ve since discovered that the S1H reads it continuously, which is awesome.

      Hey there. It sounds like you have all you need. The Ninv V + Connect will be the server, and the UltraSync Blue will sync (be a client) to that. Then you can connect some BT devices to the Blue, and some to the Ninja. If you need more, you can just add another Blue, which will also connect to the Ninja. The 10 meter range is bluetooth; the BT devices should be within 10m of the USBlue. But the USBlue can be any distance from the Ninja. Remember that once it's synced to the Ninja, even if it goes out of range, it has a quartz crystal so will stay in sync for a long time, unlike cameras or other devices which will drift pretty quickly if not in regular connection with their timecode host (the USBlue).

    Hi Joseph! 😊
    I'm looking for some solution for my weddings to get all audio and camera devices to be synchonized easy and fast and timecode is the way to go, because I'm so tired to do it in post.
    I have Canon R5C as a A cam and Sony A7 III for the B cam at the moment. For audio devices I have Tascam DR-10L, Zoom h1n and Zoom H6, but I want to buy some recorder with 32bit float and timecode option and I'm looking for Tascam X8. Is there any solution for timecode on Tascam DR-10L and Zoom h1n? Or I need to buy something else for mic the groom (I'm using Tascam DR-10L for that at ths moment). I was looking to buy Tentacle Sync system with Tentacle Sync Track E, but from what I know I can't use that with any recorder that have 32bit float, timecode option and XLR output (like Tascam X8, X6 or Zoom F3). 😐
    What I have to buy to work all together perfectly? AtomX Sync will handle all of that?

    GH5S Timecode Questions (I’m New to Timecode):
    1. When using external TC box via the PC sync port, will a direct connection using a TS (not TRS) 3.5mm to PC sync cable work for TC boxes that output both timecode and scratch audio simultaneously like the Tentacle Sync E or Deity TC-1?
    2. In cases where you can’t access the PC sync port for any reason, would timecode signal still be read by cameras with dedicated TC in/out if you send timecode signal via the mic in using the TC devices listed above?
    3. The GH5S is known to drift after a short period of time (some experience drift after 30mins). When you leave the TC box connected to the the GH5S the entire take (e.g. long wedding ceremony or live events) do you still need to re-jam every 30mins to prevent drifting? What happens when you turn the camera on/off to conserve battery power?
    *I find your videos for the Lumix and Atomos system very informative and helpful. Thank you for all your efforts to educate the photo and video community! 🙂

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  2 года назад

      Hi Anna,
      1) I don't have the Tentacle boxes however their outputs are, I believe, the same as the ATOMOS boxes, which is to say a mini BNC port. To use it with the GH5S, you go from their mini BNC to a standard BNC cable (which it should come with), then use the BNC to PC-port cable that came with the GH5S. (there might be a single cable solution available ,too). So I'm not sure where you're trying to use the 3.5mm TS cable on this?
      2) If you do use the audio port, then you are recording timecode to the audio track. You then need to use software to convert that to actual Timecode. Resolve has it built in, FCP does not, and not sure about Premiere. But tentacle has free software to do this.
      3) Any device without a crystal will drift. Unfortunately the GH5S does not continuously read TC. The good news is that means you can just plug it in (jam it) then move it to another camera. The bad news is that you have to do that every so often. 30 minutes sounds extreme but to be fair I've never critically tested it.
      * Thank you!

      @@photojoseph thank you for the super quick and detailed response! About my first question, I was thinking of just getting rid of the BNC cable that came with the GH5S and just connect the TC box directly using one (3.5mm TS to PC sync) cable for easier cable management. Just not sure if a TS pin (instead of TRS) would still be able to carry both timecode and audio simultaneously. 🙂

    • @photojoseph

      @@rrainezero19 TS will definitely only carry TC. One band is the ground, the other for the timecode. If it was TRS and there was an audio input then audio could go to one channel and TC to the other.
