      I’m a DIY guy so limited experience but that makes a lot of sense to me. Kerdi band and Kereck (corners) can produce significant build up over the base layer. I’ve heard of guys treating that issue by building up thinset to smooth out the difference similarly to taping Sheetrock. I don’t think thinset is made to do that. Using hydroban in those limited situations would solve that. I’m not sure about covering all of the Kerdi membrane with Hydro ban.

    • @bryanseever5468

      @@dblarney8201 hydro ban will stick to about anything, it's superior in topical waterproofing. You pay for it for sure, the old saying "worth it weight in gold" it just might be. Lol

      @@bryanseever5468 You’re right about the cost of Hydroban, but they’re not exactly giving away the Kerdi corners. On a simple shower with a tile floor and one custom niche the nickels start to add up quickly when you have to buy all those inside and outside corners. I’m thinking the system you use makes the most sense.

    My wife and I did the same for our diy goboard shower. Followed the directions but then added the redgard tape in the corners and where the walls meet the floor. Then 2 coats of redgard on top. Since it’s our house, it seemed like an easy 2nd layer of insurance.

    GREAT video. At 20+ minutes of work and minimal expense - you have to wonder: why NOT use both the sheet membrane and the liquid. At twice or triple the price, the peace of mind would be worth the investment.

    • @MrWhateva10
      @MrWhateva10 3 года назад +1

      The only argument I've heard is the possibility that water gets under the liquid and then can't escape in any direction, and can't be detected from the appearance of water stains, etc. From there, presumably, the water deteriorates one of the products until it fails. I don't buy it, but I'm not a pro either.

    • @MrWhateva10
      @MrWhateva10 2 года назад

      @fartpoobox ohyeah Yeah, I'm sure it's not an approved technique. What bothers me about the logic of the "moisture sandwich" is it requires the outermost material to have failed. So if that's your only material, you have a leak. The fact that an inner layer has stopped it doesn't make the situation worse in my mind. Installing per directions is the way to go, but there's a non-trivial level of skill involved with a lot of these materials. Applying the right amount of pressure, working fast enough but not too fast, etc. If you screw up, even a tiny bit over something that isn't mentioned in the directions, the system can fail. Like I almost never see it mentioned that you can't allow thinset to cure on top of Kerdi prior to laying an adjoining piece over it. You may have the 2" overlap, but if thinset cured on a layer first, you can't get those two membranes close enough to actually get the 48hr water resistance. For a pro working fast it's no problem. For a homeowner that does the corners and edges after work one day, and a sheet the next day, oops.

Then two coats of the Ardex over entire area that will be wet. Insurance that I will never get a call for a leak for sure. Bullet proof system how I do it.

      @fartpoobox ohyeah "If the water gets through the first line of defence..." this doesn’t make any sense. If you have only one layer, same logic applies. Water touches the tile, goes through the thinset regardless. So there is always some residue water behind the surface on top of the waterproofing.

    Great content. I was wondering if you have ever used Hydro-Blok and their shower system. I'm going to be building a zero entry shower on the second floor so low profile shower pan is a must. I'm not sure if you can use a dry mix for that shallow of a pan (1" at edges 48x60) or I'd just do that instead to get the weeping system you seem to prefer.

    With using best possible practices why don’t you run the line drain flap up the wall first then bring the sheet membrane over it

    Thinset +Plastic and fabric = Waterproofing ? I have seen lot of those infinity linear drains leak. The glue just separate from SS drain body. Double systems and LM has been used since 20+ years ago by professional waterproofers.

I wasn’t expecting having to completely replacethe plumbing all the way down to the crawl space and even then the cement tubing used was cracked and broken. I honestly think it will hold up decently at least five years, then ill go in and redo it because the house is 100 years old and I’ll be redoing a lot of it.

    do you think hydro ban will adhere to kerdi membrane with easy? i bought a kerdi shower kit and halfway installed.. do you think it will adhere good to there membrane??? i hope you see my comment..

    • @MrWhateva10
      @MrWhateva10 3 года назад +2

      Yeah it adheres fine. Beware the thickness of your coats, as this product does need to air dry. If you put it on really thick, the top will cure to a waterproof skin, and since you've put it on a waterproof membrane, the rest of the thick coat cannot ever dry out. So brush it on thin like a coat of paint, and don't let it pool up in corners and low areas. You can always add a second or third coat even, just keep them thin.
      There's also Hydroban Cementitious that comes as a powder you mix with water like thinset, and it cures like cement, chemically reacting with the water. It requires no air drying, and could in theory be put on much thicker. Isaac has used it too.

    • @nailbndr9869
      @nailbndr9869 3 года назад

      @@MrWhateva10 the hydroban cementitious does require air to dry. Ardex 8+9 does not need air. Maybe mixed the two up.

    Doing double waterproofing might result in water getting trapped between the water proofing and not drying properly. In conclusion making it worse.
    All companies like laticrete and schluter will tell you to not do this. Is not necessary and is just a waste of money and extra work. Their membranes were made for this and as long as they are installed properly they will no fail.

    • @dwsolberg
      @dwsolberg 3 года назад +3

      I think a moisture sandwich involves a waterproof layer, then a non waterproof layer, then another waterproof layer. This is just two waterproof layers, so there's no "food" in the sandwich.

    • @dwsolberg
      @dwsolberg 2 года назад +2

      @Abdul Hai I'm not sure it's necessary, but it might be more durable. It might fill in any gaps in the other layer like a pinhole or abrasion. Maybe a similar idea to using two coats of paint to get better coverage? In any case, I don't see a moisture sandwich because both layers are waterproof and there's no material or air between them.

    • @TileCoach

      From what I understand, Schluter will warranty their drain, and laticrete will warranty their membrane. At least that is how Ardex, RSS, and FloFX approach warranty issues when mixing manufacturers. To be honest, if there is a failure with this system it’s 99% going to be an installer issue so warranty wouldn’t do anything anyways. Great question. Thank you.

    Thats why i dont trust sheet membrane systems.
    Whats the point in even using it?
    I get that its faster but who cares if it leaks? Id rather spend 2 or even 3 days applying a liquid membrane that 100% wont leak than spend 1 day on a sheet membrane that keeps me up at night.
    Ill stick with Redgard. Been using it for 15 years without failure.
    I understand the Hydro- whatever is new and supposedly "better" but unless youve tested it personally for atleast 5 years, it doesnt mean anything to me.
    If every add copy and marketing slogan was true the world would be a completely different place.
    Ill stick with Redgard.
    But i appreciate the info. Love the channel.

    I've heard you shouldn't apply liquid membrane over a mud shower pan with a PVC liner because you may trap moisture. Is what your doing possibly causing the same effect? Liquid waterproofing over the ditra with thinset in between? I like your procedure but was wondering about that.
