I need to replace a failed backer board (builder used drywall and whoever installed the grab bar didn't seal it) and this video was extremely helpful. Thanks very much!
well, looks like my 20 years of using schluter may be interrupted with some laticrete systems. i will tell you that those kerdi inside and especially outside corners gave me grief with the the buildup causing me to use excessive thinset to make up for those areas. i want to run my notch trowel from end to end and apply the tile as close to the membrane/substrate as possible. i use to float for years and was rewarded with a true and flat mud job with very little thinset needed. if i can find a system that replicates that, i would be less grumpy on my son who is learning this trade. thank you sal!
Finally seeing laticrete products in my area, but only partially. Everyone is jumping on the Uber showers, but TV I’m not sure. I like everything about schluter except overlap buildup.
After using the schluter system, i was thinking their system could be improved by using the schluter glue between the joints.. Hydro Ban takes that to the next level. The membrane looks thicker. Thank you for posting.
Good video, wish I had seen it 3 years ago before I did a master bath shower with Hardie backer, Schluter over it. I will definitely use the Hydro Ban backer from now on. On the overlap, from my uneducated point of view I think you should put the membrane on the pan surface first, then the wall-to-floor transition bands, then the corners last. I know this is not a roof, but the principle is the same-- water flows downstream. You're not going to know whether you have pinhole leak failures at the corners or bottom seams by doing just a crude flood test. It may take months and years for pinhole leaks to rot the floor joists. If the leak water flows downhill via the overlap, eventually to the drain, that's inconsequential. But it would definitely be consequential if the leak water follows the surface of the corner unit if it's under the bottom membrane or the wall-to-floor transition bands. Certainly an over-paint with Hydroban liquid might minimize that from happening, but why rely on only that to "save your life" (so to speak)?
This is a common misconception, manufacturer does not care what order you do the banding. And you are correct it is not a roof and does not have to shed water, it has to hold water. Also why you flood test, to be sure you did it right. Never had a shower fail a flood test. As to you point about a possible failure and a pinhole. A failure is a failure, if it leaks it failed, no amount of water shedding will fix that in a failed waterproofing of a shower that sees over the equivalent of 1000 inches of rainfall.
I like this substrate better than kerdiboard, especially I like how the screws hold up on it. Doing a few showers out of it right now, but the designer specked out kerdi line drains, so those come with kerdi fleece on it.. Would it be ok to make the showerpan out of kerdi and connect with this board in the same way using schluter bands and corners? I don’t care about the warranty, but would like to hear if anyone is strongly against it
I have used the Kerdi banding and drains several times with Hydro ban board. As you noted, you will lose the warranty, but it will work just fine. I prefer to stick with a single manufacturer when possible though
Hey big guy, another fantastic video and piece of work. Thanks for sharing all your great work and knowledge. Wish you were down here on Long Island. Set-On madman.
Thanks Sal. I'm using this system also with identical wall board installation. Use their pre-sloped pan and passes the flood test with the sealant connection between the pan and wall board.
@@gtpro700 A mud floor gives you more flexibility regarding drain location. Joists can force you to offset your drain. Your drain must be perfectly placed with a foam pan. A foam pan also requires a perfectly flat, and level floor, where as a mud pan doesn't. If you have to trim your foam pan to fit, its perimeter won't be level anymore, which will cause issues with your 1st row of tile. For a one-off DIY remodel, a foam pan may be the way to go, but to do multiple showers, it's best to learn how to do a mud floor.

Greetings, Ive used the Schluter system over 40 times and this looks very similar. I havent tried this Laticrete system yet but i want to. I use Laticrete thinset all the time though. The question i have is (like with Kerdi), would Laticrete 272 or 317 be better to use with this hydroban system since they are unmodified thinsets??
No, even with the schluter system use All Set Modified thin set for waterproofing, it holds up way better. The showers built with the unmodified thin set should hold up, but All Set gives a better bond, test has been made. With the Laticrete system I’ve found it best to use Multi Max lite, or one of the higher line of thin sets, the bond is incredible. Both systems worth, based on test that have been done the laticrete system is a little bit better and the membrane that’s lays on shower pan is a bit easier to install. Hope this helped👍🏽
It was recommended that I use 1/2 inch Hydro Ban board around my tub. Is that ok? When would you use a 1 inch or greater thickness in Hydro Ban Boards.
Hi Sal. Love your videos! Question about using only sealant between seams and corners. I saw a video by the Tile Coach where a Wedi system that uses sealant only failed at a customers home so badly, he had to replace all the joists and studs in the shower due to sever rot. Apparently the sealant delaminated from the board allowing water to pour through. I know your video is 3 years old, would you still recommend the sealant method today? Is there a difference between Wedi sealant and the one for Hydro Ban? Just to clarify, the delamination happened in the dado where the floor met the preformed shower pan. The sealant in that dado joint delaminated.
Great video Sal! Would it be possible to use the HB boards method you show and adding a Schluter pan into the mix using the sealant between the two products?

Thanks for the content and sharing your trade. Can you use hydroban liquid waterproofing to go over the adhesive? I understand you don’t need to but if there was a spot I was worried about would it adhere ok?
Hi Sal! I am installing a tile that has a matching crown ( to put all the way to the ceiling) and a matching 5" base that goes all around the bathroom floor which goes directly into the shower with no step. Where do I start the tile, at the top of the wall with the crown ceramic piece or at the floor with the base pieces? Subway style field tile goes in between the two in the shower area.
If you have a crown and a base tile moldings, be sure that the shower floor and the ceiling are level . do a layout for all the elements of the tile so you know what all your cuts will be before you start your tile, once you have done that, you can start where it makes most sense, in most cases that will be the bottom and work your way up, otherwise you will be fighting the tile that will not stay in place with most thinsets, they tend to slide downwards.
Sal - I'm going to be using the Hydro-Ban Pre-sloped pan and Hydro Ban board (like you have) if I use adhesive to connect the board to the hydro-ban pre-sloped pan, do I still need banding? I was going to add a layer of hydro ban liquid for added measure. Thoughts??
Hi Sal, Ive watched a few of your Hydro Ban Board shower installation videos. I believe this one being the most recent you have done. Looks like there is no need for a hydro Ban paintable waterproofing membrane of sealing tape on the flat walls if you trowel the sealant? Is that the case? I'm sure you are aware of the shortage of Kerdi sheet products available now. I am going to use a 12x28 Kerdi Niche and hydro band board in a tub surround application. Any recommendations for waterproofing the seams between kerdi niche and HB Board? And lastly what to do about modified vs unmodified thinset with the 2 different brands? I have 254 platinum for the walls, with that be ok in the niche? Any input is greatly appreciated!
Another great vid Sal. What are the dimensions roughly of this shower space? Looks like 60" on one end but not sure of width. Would you consider using the blue roll on waterproofing as a final insurance policy vs. just tiling on top of the Hydroban?
Hi Sal is this material less expensive then Schluter? Not sure which way to go now. Sal that last board you put over the pipes what is that yellow looking foam insulation or what type of insulation behind the board is that. I feel behind the tiles and the drywall I believe they put in my bathroom he said it was green board on the ceiling which is peeling already there’s no insulation or anything because every time we turn on the water or just any little movement with the handles in the shower sounds very echoey and very loud so when I have and who’s job is it to do all the work in the bathroom, is it a plumber is it a tile specialist whose job, so I can start searching for that person. As my general contractor that I fired along time ago was the one doing all the hiring so I didn’t know who was who. Thank you.🙏🏼
Not exactly sure about the insulation, might be Rockwool. As far as the prep for the tile work, that should be the tile guy, he should put up the board, do any furring needed to get the walls flat, if you ask him he might do the insulation, but that is generally done by the GC. Sheet rock on the ceiling is fine if it is not a steam shower. Laticrete Hydroban board is more affordable than schluter, but just as good.
Can't find anything on the laticrete website about adhering to the sealant. I know you're not supposed to be able to bond to kerdi fix or similar polyurethane sealants. This laticrete sealant looks like it tools a lot differently than a polyurethane sealant does. Almost like it's an acrylic latex. I trust Sal has done his research though! 😁
Yes it will stick, it is designed to work with thinset mortar, otherwise what would be the point of using it in a system that relies on thinset to adhere tile to the substrate.
@@justpassingthrough7989 it's almost certainly a STPE-based sealant. Almost all major sealant manufacturers offer them now (originally developed by the Japanese to seal windshields to car bodies but now widely used in building construction as liquid flashings at doors/windows). That said, on vertical surfaces, probably any high-quality sealant would work. It's the horizontal seams where water may sit that really need a high performance STPE sealant.
which method do you prefer, the sealant or the hydroban liquid and fiber tape. I imagine the sealant is much faster but hydroban liquid and fiber is tougher? Especially if building acustom niche?
@SalDiBlasi Thanks... asking because it seems like the top liner membrane system negates the need for vinyl or Oatey barrier. Seems like top layer waterproofing and Oatey barrier is belts and suspenders. Are the new waterproofing technologies negating the purpose of the Oatey/PVC ?
Hi Sal, on the floor of the curb you added that strip of Hydro Ban. Did you add another strip that overlapped the floor and inside of the curb (off-camera)?
After completing mudding of the mat on the pan, I didn’t understand why you placed an additional strip along the curb side of the pan?? (Around 50:30 minutes)
Sal, I have always been a concrete board and mud pan guy but thinking of going this route. Just as another layer of protection, would it hurt to apply Hydro Barrier and mesh to all joints? Great video, thanks!
Phenomenal as Always!!! I've been tiling for close to 20 yrs. You are who I aspire to be. Question...I use the Fiber Band along with red guard or aqua defense on my showers that have durock, backer board, etc...is it ok to do that?
Sal, looks awesome one of the better videos for Laticrete. If you were doing a linear drain would you use Schluter’s and treat the flange like the Laticrete fabric?
I like to stick to a single manufacturer to preserve warranty, however these are sealed systems so they will work if you use a Schluter drain and laticrete membranes.
Great video and about to do the same process, What did you use to waterproof the curb after the flood test. VIdeo sorta stops after that. Can you use the same membrane to wrap the curb?
Hi Sal - we met once at Coverings Atlanta. I have the same question as another commenter. Looks like you used basically the whole Laticrete system, except you used a Schluter bonding flange. Is this accepted by either company? I love the idea. Schluter has been great for me, but I'm so damn tired of getting my walls super flat and then messing it up with Kerdi band! Would appreciate an answer. Thanks for your videos.
These days I usually use FloFX drains, as far as the warrantee goes, talk to your Laticrete rep to get a clear answer you can trust, they are always willing to help.
Hey Sal, I called laticrete to see if they sell a smaller membrane roll and explained what I was going to do (essentially what this video shows) and they recommended I just skip the membrane and roll on hydro ban, 2 coats with a 1/2" nap roller directly to the dry mud bed. Have you tried this method? I know laticrete has a video on it.
Great video Sal, answered a lot of questions I had. Would you recommend doing a custom sized niche made of CBU just be waterproofed with a liquid applied Hydroban? It seems like the layers and small pieces required to do it in membrane would add up quickly and become difficult to work with.
Sal Is the sausage tubes more cost effective than the smaller gun tubes. I dont own a sausage gun. So I always bought the tubes. Also I notice the banding you installed is some up some down.. I always thought it was reading up
Sausages are almost cheaper (although only typically available in commercial supply houses or online). Benefit is more product (typically 20 oz vs 10 oz tubes) and far less waste (just a 1/2" or so of compressed plastic casing rather than the bulky hard plastic tubes). If you do any meaningful amount of caulking, it's well worth buying a quality sausage gun (typically come with multiple spare tips). Commercial guys use battery-powered caulking guns (Dewalt etc) to reduce hand/wrist fatigue.

Thoughts??
The sealant should be enough, but the banding or liquid can't hurt.
Sal,if you were doing your a bathroom in your own home which system would you use?
Thanks
John
Either this, or Schluter.
Another great vid Sal. What are the dimensions roughly of this shower space? Looks like 60" on one end but not sure of width. Would you consider using the blue roll on waterproofing as a final insurance policy vs. just tiling on top of the Hydroban?
Sal, can I use that sealant for densshield board ?
no
Hi Sal is this material less expensive then Schluter?
@@SalDiBlasi thank you Sal got it 🙏🏼👍🏼
Does mortar stick to the sealant?
Awesome! I ask because similar waterproofing systems to this, have had issues with thinset bonding to the sealant
I can't seem to get hydro ban board in the UK, I've found hydro ban liquid membrane at £95.00 for 5 litre tub.
which method do you prefer, the sealant or the hydroban liquid and fiber tape. I imagine the sealant is much faster but hydroban liquid and fiber is tougher? Especially if building acustom niche?
Sealant is more time and cost effective, but not right for every job. That is why you should be proficient in many methods.
The laticrete glue looks easier to work with than the wedi or hydroblock...not as thick. Or is it the same exact stuff?
Yes, I find it to be a little easier to apply.
Sal did you use a vinyl or Oatey membrane under your dry bed mud on this install ?
no
@SalDiBlasi Thanks... asking because it seems like the top liner membrane system negates the need for vinyl or Oatey barrier. Seems like top layer waterproofing and Oatey barrier is belts and suspenders. Are the new waterproofing technologies negating the purpose of the Oatey/PVC ?
Nice video again Sal. All modified thinset? vs. unmodified.. Add fiber mesh tape or fiber band to the caulk joints?
No restrictions on mortar no tape required at the seams and corners
Mr, Sal, What kind of insulation would you put on the walls of the shower behind that laticrete board?
Whatever is called for by the GC
Sal, can you 'wet shim' this like Kerdi board?
yes
Hi Sal, on the floor of the curb you added that strip of Hydro Ban. Did you add another strip that overlapped the floor and inside of the curb (off-camera)?
Sorry don't quite understand the question, but the curb is clad in board on all three sides.
@@SalDiBlasi sorry Sal, I figured it out by rewatching the video. Perfect job as always my friend. Thanks for responding Sir.
love it. Hydroban board Thats all I use. Its the best system out there. Schluter is over priced and over hyped.
What would your plan be if you water level dropped 1/2 inch or so?
After completing mudding of the mat on the pan, I didn’t understand why you placed an additional strip along the curb side of the pan?? (Around 50:30 minutes)
Because the big piece was not wide enough to cover the whole shower floor.
Sal, I have always been a concrete board and mud pan guy but thinking of going this route. Just as another layer of protection, would it hurt to apply Hydro Barrier and mesh to all joints? Great video, thanks!
Not needed, and sometimes more does not not add but detracts.
Phenomenal as Always!!! I've been tiling for close to 20 yrs. You are who I aspire to be. Question...I use the Fiber Band along with red guard or aqua defense on my showers that have durock, backer board, etc...is it ok to do that?
I feel better using a system as designed, But if you get the correct mil thickness for the liquid applied, it will work.
@@SalDiBlasi Thank you Sir. I always enjoy your videos and love your work!!! Many Blessings to you!!!
Hey Sal love the vids starting my bathroom project soon. Which brand do u recommend most. Schluter, wedi or hydroband?
Either Schluter or Laticrete.
@@SalDiBlasi Can you use Laticrete 354 or Multimax to seal the Schluter drain?
Great video and about to do the same process, What did you use to waterproof the curb after the flood test. VIdeo sorta stops after that. Can you use the same membrane to wrap the curb?
The curb is waterproofed like the rest of the shower with the sealant at all comers and seams, banding for shower floor to wall connection.
@@SalDiBlasi Thanks for the reply. Yeah the reps have always been really responsive. Sometimes I forget I can just call someone.
That is also a method to do it, I prefer sheet membrane on the shower floor, but the Hydro ban liquid will get the job done.
@@SalDiBlasi Thanks for the reply :). These videos have been immensely helpful.
sal! just a ? if u did a roman tub what would be your choice of system 🤔 thank u in advance 👍luv your videos 👌
I have never done a Roman tub, so I don't really know. I would have to do some research on that.
Good job man!
Thanks!
I was hoping your Amazon store had links to the Laticrete wall boards, I'm not able to find them locally...
Hard to find anywhere these days. Try GoBoard
@@SalDiBlasi You are awesome!!! Thank you so much for responding! :-)
Great video Sal, answered a lot of questions I had. Would you recommend doing a custom sized niche made of CBU just be waterproofed with a liquid applied Hydroban? It seems like the layers and small pieces required to do it in membrane would add up quickly and become difficult to work with.
Get a pre made niche.
@@SalDiBlasi If I had to do it over I would absolutely go pre-made, unfortunately my niche is already in and I’ll be waterproofing what I’ve built
Is the USG shower system (foam panels) still around? It's much like the HydroBan one. I can't seem to find it in the USG catalog.
No, it has been discontinued.
Sal looks great. Do u mind me asking why your using these boards instead of wedi?
Sal
Is the sausage tubes more cost effective than the smaller gun tubes.
What Arthur said, however the sausage tubes in my area are less expensive than the sealant, twice the amount of sealant less per unit
Here the sausage tube is only a buck cheaper than the tubes combined.
