Just wanna say thanks. This video was very educational. I only have a small area for 2 mid sized dogs. I always smell piss... I take them.for walks for #2 but they still do it outside. This is a fantastic idea.. just what I needed! Thanks for the inspiration 🙌
We made the same change to pea gravel. My Labrador actually loves it! We added shrubs, potted plants, string lighting, a fire pit and cast aluminum table and chairs...and it looks like a little Tuscan paradise. My friends thought the pea gravel was a design choice because it looks so nice. I'll never tell that the original intention was a doggie litter box! Also, there is no smell. 😉
Yup. Dog struggles. I have three. I don't have a nice lawn after the winter. I have to relevel my entire lawn every spring. I am definitely making a dog litter box this year.
this is awsome I have built one it is three weeks old and no smell, i used cardboard under the gravel ( you must wet it first) then it comosts into the soil. but this is great, like he said no smell and Doggie duty is easier as it is in one location
Thanks so much for this video! My back yard is almost always muddy and grass has become fairly non existent. I'm going to try this method to allow my 2 dogs an area to go potty without getting their feet muddy. As an older woman, I think I'll be able to do this by myself. Thanks again!
How did you avoid picking up pea gravel with the poop? We don't have a confined area, but our dogs do poop in the pea-graveled border of our yard, and the pooper scooper always picks up the pea gravel with the poo.
My dog prefers to potty in my unused driveway. So I was thinking of doing the same toward the back end. Glad this works!!! USE FELT NOT WEED FABRIC THOUGH! Weed fabric is a scam. It tears and punctures easily and weed seeds CAN get through it and grow underneath. Cheap felt is too thick and dense for ANY weed seed to get through. I was thinking of sloping the felt down to a drain pipe with holes to ensure excellent drainage for rinsing since we freeze solid in winter, fry and dry in summer. She killed lawn and giant weeds grew instead. A mess.
So I did this about a year ago and it's holding up great. I have 2 big dogs what to use for the urine smell. That's the only issue. Anyone please help.
You need to rinse it with the hose. We will set up the sprinkler & let it run for a day once a month or so & it rinses all the urine out. Poop scoop prior of course. Hope this helps.
Bianca Blessed- you are very welcome! You can also go buy a few jugs of white vinegar, try to dump it all over your rocks, let sit for hour or more, then do the sprinkler to drain. The vinegar breaks down the ammonia in the urine & is also a powerful bacteria killer. Hope you & your doggies have a blessed day ;)
I'm thinking of doing the same thing to my yard. my question to you is, is it still something that you would recommend, ? or would you do something else? Thanks.
Starky Villafan , I would definitely recommend doing this. it was so easy and inexpensive. no more mud or grass in the house. no lawn to mow or replace. Thanks
@@jkoco199 so, how did you handle the poop, did you just wash it down until it broke up and then leached out below? I'm redoing my yard so seriously thinking about what I want to do.
I definetly need to do this for my border collie It's hard to clean after him becouse it sticks to the grass and it's very hard to pick it all up, it smells a lot too
Looks like you did a good job, I’m looking at a few options but my concern is the clean up, after I pick up the poop I like to hose off the remaining poop and pee to rid of the smell as best I can. Best option that enables me to do that would be smooth concrete. It’s more pricy thou.
Milano, did you decide to go with concrete? I'm in CA so not a lot of rain, so I would just be using my hose to spray everything down. If I don't do an actual concrete pad, thinking I may do pavers, and maybe some of this gravel setup. Though for continuity may just stick with the pavers if they'll look nice.
Hello. Can you still recommend this? :-) Im planning of making two of these. One in the front yard and one in the back. My dog kind of shits and pisses everywhere at the moment... :/
How was training your dogs on this area? We have a new puppy and a potty box like this setup. Obviously, he prefers grass. Was it consistency and time? Just wondering if you have any tips for that part. Thanks!
Laura Horkey I got my puppy about three and a half weeks ago.. we built the potty area before we brought him home and have been leashing him and bringing him to the box every time we think he has to go. If he goes in the box, praise and treat. After about three weeks he now runs to the box and goes there. Still the occasional mistake on the grass though. Just be consistent and give lots of praise
Whats the best way to clean up the dog poop with this type of setup? I have pea gravel like this in my dog run but find it hard to pick up the waste because the pebbles stick to it. I also have a potbelly pig and its hard to also pick his up.
Can you tell me what material you use so that we can use as well so that we don't smell the urine. I'm cleaning out our yard now for me and my neighbor we both have dogs and we are making a dog pad with the landlord pission so that our dogs and his other can use it when we are not around but we are putting in 2 of an 8x8 dog kennel out there with this so that we have a place for he dogs as Also.
This is what I'm doing as well. Are you done with yours yet? I'm wondering if I should do concrete for my yard, or maybe pavers, that way I could more easily pick up the poop and then just wash everything down with the hose.
Right now I have grass and dirt which is obviously not working at all. Also, what fencing are you using for your dog pen, chain link or something else?
I would strongly advise you make sure what type of treatment was used for the pressure treatment of your wood. Certain chemicals are very bad to animals. Just make sure you do your research first and not buy any pressure treated wood for this type of work especially if it's out in the open like that where it can come into contact with your dog.
decks are pressure treated. only real problem with pressure treated wood is, you dont want to burn it and you dont want it in your garden. other than that you are good to go.
I suppose it could be a problem if your pet chewed it? But I've had cats and dogs around pressure-treated many times, never an issue. Probably cuz it would taste extremely nasty too.
I was thinking about doing this my only concern its that the space that I have for that has a roof its like a cart port garage so the rain wont wash the pee from peagravel, the smell wont go away right?
My friend had three mastiffs who had a run like this made of gravel... stunk worse than I would have ever imagined. There might be an enzyme treatment you could use, but that seems like more work than just walking the dog every day.
I don't recall off hand what I spent but it was verrrry inexpensive. You are correct though, bulk is the way to go. I ordered and spread 16 tons of decorative rocks for my flower beds.
Surprisingly, they did not get hot! If they had been black pebbles or gravel, then maybe. I moved away from there 7 years ago. Now, I have 2 acres instead of a tiny backyard. Thank you for watching and commenting :)
Cool idea. It would smell great for a bit. But, when wet it gets moldy and it will rot and need to be top coated or replaced. Pea gravel is rinse and walk away.
With all respect, why you didn't record all the process, for me is like you are reading directions instead of showing them. Thank you though for the time you spent on this video.

Wonderful idea. I just wanted to add for anyone watching, you could also add a poop-hole in one of the corners, to dump #2s and let them compost.

I read that you want a layer of sand pebbles first, covered with fiberglass mesh and then put the pea gravel on top of that for proper drainage.
What kind of sand pebbles did they prefer?
Yes. It was called pea gravel.
Yes!! Just what we need! We have a new build with no grass and sod isn’t a good option for us
Give it a try. We moved to 2 acres of land so we don't need it anymore but when the dogs used it, it was awesome!
Great idea, it's practical and neat too👍
I use red mulch. Cheap to replace. Easy to spot poop. Soaks in #1.
Was just talking about doing this. Great video. I wonder how it's doing now after years
I sold the house. The new owners did not have pets so they ripped it all out...LoL
I've been talking about doing this for about 6 months. This video helped put something tangible in my family's mind 😎
Eric McKelvey I already have an area in mind. I’m going to make it happen.
Eric McKelvey I’ve had mine for 3 years works and holds up good.
How did you avoid picking up pea gravel with the poop? We don't have a confined area, but our dogs do poop in the pea-graveled border of our yard, and the pooper scooper always picks up the pea gravel with the poo.
The pooper scooper got some pea gravel. It was such a small amount it never mattered. I never needed to replace the pea gravel ever.
@@jkoco199 Thanks!

did you have use for the turf grass
I went over top and never removed it. Everything worked perfectly.
Gm I would like to know what material goes first , etc
I put down garden bed protector. It comes on a roll from any garden center or big box store. It prevents weeds from growing up.

Good ideal but in the summer time will the pea gravel be real hot

If I have no grass, just rocks underneath, do I still need to put the weed control fabric?
I think it depends if you have weeds there already or not. If you never had weeds, you should not need to worry :)
Is it still working out? Have you changed anything? Give us an update plz!
Well...I sold the house 3 years ago. Now, my dog has 2 acres to go to the bathroom...LoL
Thank you!! It definitely work J Koco.

Would it be fine to place turf over this?
I don't think I would. It needs soil to grow its roots.
Tried that didn’t work ! my dog dug thru pea gravel down to fabric then he pulled it up it shredded pieces
Put down wiring 1st. Ala, chicken wire or something similar.
We will be doing this for our puppy. Does the weed barrier stink after a while due to absorption of urine?
I never noticed it. Rain did a great job of washing the rocks etc..
Great Idea, thanks
Thank you! I have 4 Great Danes who won’t stop using my drive way to poop and pee🥲😐

What is the brand weed barrier you bought from Home Depot?
Honestly, I have no idea. Most likely whichever would allow drainage but not weeds. Or, whichever was on sale... LoL.
Is there a way around picking up the poop?
Sorry. Not that I know of. It's just one of those jobs when you own a pet.
Water hose ???
Pressure wash those turds down
How much did it all cost?
In all about$45 from big box store. Thanks

Sarah Mulleneaux , I just used a normal pooper scooper. You get a few stones that stick but it's too be expected.
Awesome
Thank you✌
Hello what is the approximate measurement. I need similar size for sure
I don't honestly remember because we sold the house and moved. I would guess 6'x12'. Super easy project. Thanks for watching.
What about the poop
It stayed on top of the pea gravel and then I scooped it off. Easiest cleanup ever!
