  • Proton Pass is the password manager created by the scientists, who met at CERN, behind Proton Mail: the world’s largest encrypted email provider. Proton Pass is open source, end-to-end encrypted, and protected by Swiss #privacy laws.
    Proton Pass offers more than other free password managers and has no ads or data collection. You can use it for free on all your devices to create and store unlimited passwords, autofill logins, generate 2FA codes, and secure your notes. You can also create email aliases and more.

      Likewise, I exported part of my data from an alternative BitWarden account to Proton Pass lately, thinking what’s exported to Proton Pass will automatically sort those passes into dedicated folders, turned out NOTHING happened.

    A little bit frustated...
    - No dedicated Windows app
    - 2FA is only for Premium (I think they changed their mind last minute, cause few pages from Proton shows its included within Free plan)
    - No web access (just browser plugins)

    It’s trivial to copy a 2fa seed. Solution: A simple hardware 2fa in your pocket is obvious, like Yubikey. Trusting someone, ANYONE, with ALL your 2fa seeds is NOT a logical “intermediate” solution because the vast majority will NEVER get around to perfecting their security. 1Password blew it when they abandoned self-hosted vaults for those under their control. 1. Not your vault, not your passwords, 2. Not your seeds, not your vault, 3. Not your seeds, not your 2fa.

    • @Carmoca
      @Carmoca Месяц назад

      Totally agree. Giving away your 2fa seed breaks the whole 2fa chain of custody! I’m surprised that Proton requests a person’s 2fa token. I’m not enabling this feature on any of my devices or apps.

    I am considering Email Plus or Proton Unlimited so that I can use multiple email addresses. Currently, I have Proton Pass Plus linked with one email address, so whenever I am to fill an email to a field for a subscription, Proton Pass offers me an alias linked to that one email, obviously. But how does it work when one has multiple email addresses (I mean full-fledged, not mere aliases)? Does Proton Pass offer the alias for subscibtions etc fields for the “main” email address only, or can one easily choose from all the email addresses that are added to the account?

    • @ProtonAG
      @ProtonAG  7 месяцев назад

      For this, you can use SimpleLogin. You need to create a SimpleLogin account using the same email address you used to create your Proton Pass account. Once you do, all of your Proton Pass aliases will show up in your SimpleLogin account too.
      After that, you'd need to add multiple email accounts (Mailboxes) to your SimpleLogin account (simplelogin.io/docs/mailbox/add-mailbox/), which will then become become an option in your Proton Pass account. Then, you can choose which inbox each login on Proton Pass is connected to.

      @Basily420 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@ProtonAGi‘m really confused, I upgraded to the paid proton pass plan months ago but am still not sure whether I should switch or not. For what exactly is SimpleLogin used for in this case when there is the proton pass app which stores all logins? Can you save different email addresses (even if not proton) in SL? And what is meant by gaining access to the whole Proton ecosystem by having proton pass plus? It‘s really hard to get an overview and the more I research, the more confused I am. I really like that whole concept of Proton and would love if you could clarify- maybe even with some youtube content? Thanks a lot!

    • @ProtonAG
      @ProtonAG  6 месяцев назад +1

      SimpleLogin and Proton Pass, even though they overlap in some aspects, are two different services. SimpleLogin is focused on email aliases, while Proton Pass's primary purpose is to store your passwords and other non-public information.
      Currently, Proton Pass doesn't have the option to add multiple mailboxes (i.e. the destination addresses to which messages sent to your aliases are directed), but SimpleLogin does (on Premium plan only). However, the two can be connected as described in the previous message, and then you'd have the option to use multiple mailboxes (added to SimpleLogin) in your Proton Pass account.
      Gaining access to the whole Proton ecosystem by having Proton Pass Plus means that, unlike with most password managers, signing up to Proton Pass automatically allows you to use the free versions Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, and Proton Drive. This applies to having Proton Pass free account too. You can learn more here: proton.me/pass.

    I love the design, but for now, is the only reason to change from Bitwarden/2FAS/Anonaddy or SimpleLogin
    I think Bitwarden is light years ahead on privacy and security, but their UX sucks, but is free and will stay free forever, and their premium plan is very cheap so people pay only for support developers, not for features (not all of them, at least).
    2FAS is just beyond amazing, and I wouldn't recommend to have your 2FA codes on your password manager.
    SimpleLogin and Anondaddy are just fine, I'm currently using both in order to determine a winner, but both work very nice.
    Proton is just so expensive for a cool UI. The security and privacy should not be that expensive, especially when I read that Proton gave info of one user to some government.

    Love Proton products, but I feel there is a serious security issue with Proton Pass. If something happens to me, a nefarious character may gain access to my thumb and get into Proton Pass. I wish all apps offered both a biometric and a 4 pin code. If I am dead or unconscious, my unattended fingerprint, which is neither, is a potential security threat. Building 2FA into the password manager defeats the whole purpose of 2FA, which is to ensure authentication via something you know + something you have. 2FA via a standalone mobile app is better from a security perspective.

    • @coldbrew6104
      @coldbrew6104 7 месяцев назад +11

      2FA from a standalone app and 2FA bundled into a password manager is the same thing: something you have.
      I believe 2FA bundles with your password manager is worth the convenience and, in a way, is more secure because it's protected in your strictly-locked vault.
      2FA via standalone app, however, should DEFINITELY be used for your password manager account.

    • @corvacopia
      @corvacopia 3 месяца назад +3

      The purpose of 2FA is not to protect you from someone getting access to your password manager, generally

    • @MrAusdrifter
      @MrAusdrifter 3 месяца назад +6

      From a strictly security standpoint you are correct, this is a lot less secure.
      However it does add useability which increases security more than a simple password does.
      Say someone does crack that password, they still can't get in unless they also crack your proton account. Not impossible, but even more unlikely

    • @CyborgZeta
      @CyborgZeta 3 месяца назад +5

      Not necessarily. An unauthorized individual could not access my Proton Pass vault with my Proton credentials alone; they would need my security key or 2FA token. The latter of which is sealed behind the vault they're trying to access in the first place.
