    I own one of these bad boys! but I was always wondering how to restore it later on because even when your a clean freak and super careful, grills will still be grills and get messy and get build up with time. so this video helped me a lot! thanks tony! guys I recommend a griddle to avoid all that mess and aluminum on the bottom if using the grill plates to catch drips!

    I used to clean my roadtrip with a wire wheel (which worked fine with my drill) Eventually the chrome plating wore off and then the tray started to rust. If it ever rusts bad enough, i'll just buy a replacement tray from coleman. I have already replaced a slide out tray that broke for like $7. I've had mine for about 5 years now and its awesome.

    Hey there, Great video! Do you have any advice on how I could fix the regulator? the one on mine seems to be leaking, and I was told to get a replacement but can't seem to find it anywhere....

  • @tooldudetony
    @tooldudetony  11 лет назад +1

    @oldscratchbrew - Yes. That would work. Use some degreaser before spraying the paint or it won't stick for long. Good luck.

  • @tooldudetony
    @tooldudetony  11 лет назад

    @ George - I wouldn't recommend spraying Rustoleum to buy more time. Instead, just keep it clean and maybe coat the burner parts with a little vegetable oil when you put it away for the winter.

    I bought one brand new, onsale about 7 yrs ago, its taken a beating and was prepared to trash it. After watching this video, i will restore it! I once broke the grease pan during transportation. Ordered 2 just in case. Any suggestions on upgrading wheels, mine are wobbly, i prefer to upgrade with something not so flimsy?

    OK Dude... you been able to locate the little hose/tube and regulator for that? I can't for the life of me. I know they are supposed to be back in production, but finding one has been hard... I have a grill on my porch and it is not cooking squat till I get the new part(s).

    Tony, are the hinges held on by rivets or by screws? The one I just acquired for $30, the cover/lid was not attached. PLEASE ADVISE. Mine looks way worse than the one you restored, but I've already removed a lot of the surface dirt & chunks of "BBQ-dung" (for lack of a better term). I'll have to send before & after photos....super glad I found your video.....Thanks

    is that paint safe for cooking...i was worried about fumes and paint ware...i was gonna paint the whole inside too.would that be ok?

  • @tooldudetony
    @tooldudetony  11 лет назад

    @Alan - That paint is specific for grills like this, so assuming the manufacture has done the right thing, we should be good using it on our grills. Fumes are never good. Use a real mask (not a dust shield) like a 3M Tekk Protection Paint Project Respirator whenever possible. And yes, you can paint the whole inside. Just be sure to prep it good so the paint doesn't flake off on you later. Thanks and have fun with your project.

    Hi Tony
    I am trying to enamel paint the grill. In particular I am looking for painting the chrome plated bottom just like the top (but with black). I tried using the rustoleum high heat, but after application, I dont see the enamel kind of smooth finish. What do you recommend if I have to get the smooth finish.
    I looked at www.eastwood.com/paints/hi-temp-engine-paints/engine-paints.html
    but I am not sure if that holds to the high heat.
    Appreciate some inputs

    I have a roadtrip grill, has a hose that attaches to a 15lb bbq propane tank. I would like to adapt the grill to use a small green tank, one you can buy for about 2.00 in Walmart. Do they sell an adaptor for the coleman Roadtrip grill?

    Just wondering. How did the burners hold up with the paint? Did it start to flake off?
    I thought that even the high temp paints weren't supposed to be used inside the grill.

    LOL thanks for the laugh.... mine needs a cleaning but i will pass on the power tools. I am going to cheat my butt off and use... easy off heavy duty oven cleaner... you just can't leave it on chrome for a extended period or it yellows. I really like the turtle wax idea for the black plastic pieces. Thanks for the vid.

    You did a great job cleaning this grill, but most of what you did was a waste of time, with the exception of cleaning the grates and wiping the chrome tray under the grates, I would not have done anything else. Taking the burners apart and cleaning the rust off and repainting them was a waste of time, in my opinion. Also, the burners should not be painted because you risk clogging up the holes when doing so, and they did not come from the manufacturer painted. But I guess if you have the time to do all that cleaning that's great, but it would have worked just as well with just a quick cleaning. I have the same grill and just clean the grates occasionally, and wipe out the debris on the chrome tray and that's it. It's worked fine for many years.
