Good information but if you don’t have a ground person or other rider is there another way to implement these techniques. I’m by myself most of the time.

Yes, utilizing the cons with targets is a great tool. Also, utilizing a reverse round pen is another great way to create a new an improved reinforcement history with going forward. Our podcast, Equine Clicker 101 is a podcast that has lessons with R+. There is one on the reverse round pen, one on stationary targets and one on teaching the reluctant horse or move forward. 😊

In this video I explain some ways to help create forward movement. I have come across a lot of horses who have learned to shut down in response to traditional(or natural horsemanship) training methods when it comes to moving forward. More pressure and stronger aids tends to produce more balkiness in these horses. Positive reinforcement/clicker training has helped to unlock their resistance creating bright, happy horses who have learned to enjoy moving forward. First we get movement and then we can refine the criteria. ruclips.net/video/NloJz6uZ5Zs/видео.html www.shawnakarrasch.com

Horses often don't to go over barn sour or buddy sour issues. Not about "abuse" in the past. Far from it. They also do it as we've unconsciously reinforced the behavior by teaching they can get out of doing what we ask.
