Wish we still had some here ein Kansas City, MO. The last unit of our Thunderbolt system (cira 1971) went down in 2002 after it was hit by an 18 wheeler that was delivering gas to a filling station. The pinheaded driver wasn't looking where he was backing up, slamming the thankfully empty tanker into the 1000T's pole, sending it crashing to the ground. The entire head had burst open, and the horn had broken in half. A 2001 took its place in less than 72 hours.
I think this may be the best timed attack mode I've ever seen from a thunderbolt. Usually, the on cycle is shorter than the off, and it just does not sound right, but this one is great.
Even though I was born in '86 and don't remember the Soviet Union, this sound still sends chills up my spine. The fact that it has that effect demonstrates how terrifying the Cold War and the fear of a Soviet nuclear attack truly was.
@xxxEMnjxxx The horn is about (rough estimates here) 4' long, the chopper/rotator box about 3' tall. blower box is maybe 3' by 4' by 2' tall. the whole thing is about 900 pounds.
I wish my city had thunderbolts. Well my local school has a tornado siren originally used for civil defense in the cold war era, so that's kinda historical too.
I'm with you on that one! We just have to convince Federal Signal Corporation to either release or loan us the production rights. Bring back the T-Bolt with backup battery!
If we lived in an ethical world, a world of things built to last, a world of pride in workmanship--then T-bolts would still reign supreme. The idea of replacing mechanical generated sound with electronic artificial sirens such as are available today is one based on the goal of saving money--not lives. They should still be using these--not the artificial electronic "sirens" that are used today. T-bolts and other such sirens are the only sane choice.
@anaheiminthe70s Me too, in Placentia. Fun times growing up during the Cold War! This sound still makes my blood run cold and just about stops my heart.
i love these thing they just replaced these thing in my town its sad to see them go but anway whe we do the monthly EM test i put on a gas mask and head into my Fallout Shelter like back in the day
Its at the Tinley park mental health building. But you cant go in the facility anymore because security will immediately stop you from going in. I'd recommend to film it from the ucp Seguin foundation building.
Why does it sound like somebody just turning it on and off for the first few wails? Anyway, this is one of the best sounding Tbolts I've ever heard. Thanks for getting the video.
Awesome sound. I miss hearing these back in Michigan. FYI, your video isn't legally copyrighted unless you have filed with the US copyright office. Just slapping a copyright tag on it doesn't mean it's copyrighted.
Yeah, boy this is EXACTLY the tone like the one near my house in Bloomfield Township, Michigan, growing up. The "lower-tone" is just FEAR inspiring; can't you just hear the Soviet nuclear missles coming? Higher-pitched sirens just don't cut it. BTW, hear the "cutting"? I've never heard that option used on these!
Did you know that the siren you speak of is atop a retirement home-and-NO-you would not like it if you had to tolerate it every saturday at 1:00 P.M.. I KNOW-I live 2 blocks from that @@$#ing siren!
@MrChicano209 no, i been listining to this almost every day and herd this thumping noise the first time watching this video, I just aint said shit about it
yea useless for predicting my friend but its good advancred warning for a nuclear or biologcal attack people may be able to get away before the radiation sets in.
Stand within 100 feet of one going off with out ear protection and then tell me they arent loud.....just kidding. 125db is nothing to mess around with. ALWAYS wear hearing protection or ear plugs when recording these.

Awesome sound. But, it scared the hell out of me when I was in school....way back in the 70's.

Long live the T-Bolt!
This is probably the best attack of a 1003 EVER!
"Whoa..I jumped and hit my head on the computer when i heard this..scary... "
LOL!
Personally I think every town and city should have these sirens.
kwt800 almost every state in the USA had at least some did at once
@@SNIXC florida didnt have a 1003
i think
but i know florida had a 1000at

WOW this maybe be the best sounding 1003 i have ever heard man! nice recording too! right at tghe correct angle ;D
Sounds like the thunderbolts in Pontiac,IL only they are 1000T sirens they are on the same chopper setting as this one.
@xxxEMnjxxx T-bolts are actually quite large.

I think it is probably a rooftop installation judging by the supporting cables attached to it and of course - no utility pole.

Thanks. Its nice to know when my Videos are appreciated.
i want to buy one... this thing can be use as my alarm clock... and never get late on my work again.. lol! its very usefull in this village here.
It must sound awesome in person! I'd like to hear it sometime... if I knew where this was at! haha!
Sounds like a supercharged Carter 😍
@matteng1997 How big r they on the ground??
i love these thing they just replaced these thing in my town its sad to see them go but anway whe we do the monthly EM test i put on a gas mask and head into my Fallout Shelter like back in the day
True Statement.
@zagnut48219 Thanks. There really is nothing like the sound of a T-Bolt!
IS THAT SIREN STILL UP?
I NEED TO SEE IT ON GOOGLE MAPS/EARTH!
Yes. I passed it about a week ago.
Its at the Tinley park mental health building. But you cant go in the facility anymore because security will immediately stop you from going in. I'd recommend to film it from the ucp Seguin foundation building.
Ouch! It sounds like this T1003 is on it's last leg!
i listened to this one on 1-05 and it sounds exactly like delphos, ohio's thunderbolt 1003's. they only have 2 left. and they only do alert for 1 min.
If you listen carefully it sounds like the camera man starts tapping on the camera at 1:18 what is that?
I love the sound of chopper 3 t bolts.
Thanks for the Notification. A PM has been Dispatched to his Inbox.
It's just weird that the wires actually can support something that heavy, but the pole cant.
What city is this?
Where is this siren located?
Newberry SC, I think, due to the low pi
And IDC IF IM REPLYING TO A 5 YR OLD COMMENT
@@HSETM lmao that is not newberry. Newberry does not have ropes holding it down. And there’s more than one 1003 on level 3

@xxxEMnjxxx Im not sure the exact measurement, but i know that they are pretty big. I've seen one on the ground before.
absolutely wonderful!!!
Snootzie I'm sure if you were in lower Manhattan on that day you would have heard at least one of them sounding.
That Choppiness is my camera... the microphone cant handle the volume that siren produces well.
this is pretty thick standpipe... and there are Guide Wires to help support it.
Why does it sound like somebody just turning it on and off for the first few wails? Anyway, this is one of the best sounding Tbolts I've ever heard. Thanks for getting the video.
That's because it was attack mode--alert was a continuous wail, attack was rising and falling.
very healthy..nice vid!
i dont know what it is...but i love to watch these Things Fire Up!
how big r thunderbolts? cuz up in the air they look very small.
I’ll just say way bigger than the average human head lmao
@xxxEMnjxxx The horn's about 5' long

1003. see the "bow tie" solenoids?
Whats with the guy wires?
That's because a 1003 is a 1000T with Solenoids.
