Actually according to Bobcat on his instagram page, that he wasn't originally playing Zed, he was going to be the nerd with the glasses who Zed picks on all the time (eventually gaining a friendship with him) and that the guy who plays the nerd with the glasses actually was going to play Zed, they did a few takes and a few promotional pictures of them together, but they had to switch over due to the fact that the original actor was very uncomfortable wearing Zed's trademark leather jacket due to him being a vegitarian, so they swapped it and added that joke in during the shopping scene where Zed covers him with the vegetables.

Zed is a unique character but funny. Bob did a well job in playing Zed. He cracks me after all these years. Police academy will always remain a classic comedy movie like Revenge of the Nerds, Naked Gun, Airplane , Hot shots, Loaded weapon, etc

It's nice to see that Bobcat Goldthwait was able to move beyond being see in just this aspect of him. He was able to become a very successful stand up comedian and director as well as an actor showing his more serious side. I wish more people were aware that there is much more to Bobcat than just this type of performance.
When I was a young boy I loved to help my grandfather get dressed when I stayed at his place. Grandfather was severly rheumatic. I wanted to have a job in health care sector. Thereby; Loving Zed when I was a young boy, (I really laughed my ass of) now at this moment it made me realize why I love my job so much: I work as a living group counselor for people with a medium mental disorder and behavioral disorders.
Best bit is when the commandant shouts at him and he says" jerk" "What did he say? " " he said right" "no...I said jerk. I thought that was pretty clear....jerk"

He's still around. It's just that he does all the work behind the camera instead of in front of it.
He's Pop Fizz in the Skylanders TV series and keeps some of Zed's voice traits - recognised him immediately :)
