That list was more about "famous and successful" players, not necessarily "the best" players. Certainly not my top-30 list, but some of those guys would be on there. EVH, SRV, Yngwie, Lifeson, Dime, Blackmore. But how could you not include Uli Jon Roth? Or Shawn Lane? My list would have mostly metal players.
Interesting exercise, but not exactly a groundbreaking list. I think any "best" list is going to be subjective anyway, even if you tried to make it purely technical-based. I'm not a guitarist, but while I used to look for guitarists who would impress me with their technical ability and how fast they can play, my tastes now are more about feel and soul. 30 is too many, but my top 5 favorites are David Gilmour, Steve Howe, Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page and Frank Marino.

i always hate this kinds of list ; mainly because "greatest" is such a nebulous, subjective, and mostly meaningless term. so these list mostly boil down to a band popularity contest with a couple of unsung greats sprinkled in to satisfy the hardcores. for me, SRV and RR have always been (and probably always will be) 1a and 1b. my reverence Randy even increased after i heard someone make and orchestral arrangement for _Dee_ a few years ago -- if you haven't seen it, you deffo should (i _believe_ "randy rhoads symphony" as your search phrase ought get you there). both those guys were channeling something truly other-worldly that speaks to me in ways that nothing else can. i can remember an interview with EVH from back in the 80s-90s (age is eroding my memory) , he was asked "how does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?" ; and in the only moment of humility i've ever seen him exhibit , he simply replied "i wouldn't know, you'd have to ask Roy Clark". 🤔 (which, of course, is when i discovered the brilliance of Clark, who absolutely should be on any list like this, but never is just because he's "the Hee-Haw guy") as for Zappa ... hot take: he was a better composer than guitarist. that said, _Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar_ is one of the most mesmerizing things i've ever experienced. it actually completely ruined me on literally _all_ other music for at least a year or so 🤣🤣🤣 i had to learn to completely kill the "music elitist" in me just so i could go back to enjoying "regular" music again. (fast-forward 25 years, and i no longer have the attention span to listen to that album anymore🤣)
Lists are so stupid. Popularity contests. Where's Rory Gallagher and Roy Clark? Or Glenn Campbell! Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks? To try and list artists like this offensive. If you have to make lists of artists do it the sensible way, alphabetically.
