True, the email servers are also owned by the giants. But you’re one degree closer to the consumer. To get a text number/physical address or anything that avoids the tech giants all together, you have to get to the email inbox first and build the relationships so they are your people and not the property of the giants.

Creators think they absolutely need to be on social media in order to grow but the downsides of social media exceed the benefits. Direct contact with your audience is definitely the way forward. Because the audience that cares about you, will find you no matter what.

This is the best advice I have heard this year by far. I know the younger generation will just ignore it, because they don't want to make the extra effort and for them it is enough to live in social media world. When I had asked a young person to read a blog, she just looked at me and said: "I'm not 70 years old." I guess older people will listen to this advice and will benefit from it. Please keep us older folks in mind when you create these videos. I think it is time that older people start a comeback on the internet. Thanks for creating this video. it's crazy to me that people don't want their own website. I've had my own website since 1998. Just going through a major overhaul right now (switched hosting service... renewal costs at these places are insane! cheaper to switch every 3 years. haha.) i understand that these platforms such as insta, twitter, facebook etc. can be swept from underneath us BUT these platforms are so major now that i believe that we will be warned first before they attempt to take it away from us, and that should give us enough time to build a website to continue reaching out to our audience, but it is also good to make a website now just in case, and also have other backup plans!

Preach! The YT growers don’t talk about email list building enough. Compare that with the author communities which talk about it all the time. I have a list with over 450 subscribers. Email magnet, landing pages on my site, auto responder, the works. It’s key to building anything.
My channel has been hit hard recently and absolutely agree with everything you are saying. I'm afraid it's only going to get worse before it gets better.
You have to control your audience. If you think about it, imagine you have an email newsletter with 50,000 subscribers. Then you can direct them anywhere cutting out the middleman (RUclips).
Truth! I've always heard you should never build your business on someone else's platform because they could choose to change an algorithm, toss you or go kaput overnight and your business is done. Always create on your own platform. And now we have certain voices being silenced and doxed, so this is huge.

I’m so happy to hear this perspective. I don’t use social media and any business where social media is their main or even worse, only means of communication is off my radar. I won’t bend to that mode. It’s like I’m living in a forgot dimension. It is far more peaceful here in the quiet zone though. I like to have personal, precise communications with a business. A website with well laid out visual and text based information and email support is what I want. Am I a dying dinosaur breed? I keep waiting for social media to eat it’s own head and disappear. I know it won’t disappear. It will never be the same. Can we meet halfway, somewhere post social media? When social media sites started growing in popularity, I kept telling my clients that they didn't NEED social media to promote their businesses. They should mostly run ads and drive people to their websites THEN use social media as an extra.
I just went back and forth with a client because he wants to invest in his social media instead of his website. He is also planning to give product away for free just to people who follows and signs up for his company’s mailing list then keeps asking other people to look at my work to get their approval. I gave up, I’m done trying to convince him and show him that is a bad idea because his company will not see a profit if he gives away product to someone because they follow you and sign up for your email list. Today I have realized that not every dollar is worth the headache.
This is truth. Free isn’t free. You need to build a strong foundation then a strong structure. You need as much control as possible. If you don’t control you will lose control!

Yes, building an email list is improtant. Actually, it always was important, no matter what media you use to get them. And website is not needed (not a typical website), you just need an high converting landing page, where you connect autoresponder for follow ups. Its less expensive than a website that web developer would make. In fact, that type of website is hurting business, rather than helping it.
That’s what I want a landing page just to take in emails and about me section. A lot of people Iv notice keep dm me on IG with questions or collab and I just need to capture and further those relationships

100% correct, as usual, Roberto! I built my website before any of my social media and use it as a hub where my audience can find me. FB seems very limiting and IG is my main social but it’s sooo saturated. I started my email list in fall of 2019 and I love having that connection with clients and other art enthusiasts. I send a monthly art and creativity based newsletter run it all out of my Squarespace so it’s easy to integrate with my blog and portfolio. Thanks, Great advice as always!

Truth! I've always heard you should never build your business on someone else's platform because they could choose to change an algorithm, toss you or go kaput overnight and your business is done. Always create on your own platform. And now we have certain voices being silenced and doxed, so this is huge.
No video is ever dry when it’s relevant and necessary. I’m thankful for recent moves by the social media companies because it opened our eyes to the very real possibility of losing what you’ve built on their platforms. A good wake up call. I have never been a fan of social media. I have been saying this to clients to use social media to promote their website and start an email list and they give me the deer in the head lights look. I'm glad you posted this it makes a great third party validation from a very credible source. I appreciate your content.
I’m so happy to hear this perspective.
I don’t use social media and any business where social media is their main or even worse, only means of communication is off my radar. I won’t bend to that mode. It’s like I’m living in a forgot dimension. It is far more peaceful here in the quiet zone though. I like to have personal, precise communications with a business. A website with well laid out visual and text based information and email support is what I want.
Am I a dying dinosaur breed? I keep waiting for social media to eat it’s own head and disappear. I know it won’t disappear. It will never be the same.
Can we meet halfway, somewhere post social media? Some dimension more refined and humane than this current meat grinder that mangles body, mind and soul?

When social media sites started growing in popularity, I kept telling my clients that they didn't NEED social media to promote their businesses. They should mostly run ads and drive people to their websites THEN use social media as an extra.

I just went back and forth with a client because he wants to invest in his social media instead of his website. He is also planning to give product away for free just to people who follows and signs up for his company’s mailing list then keeps asking other people to look at my work to get their approval. I gave up, I’m done trying to convince him and show him that is a bad idea because his company will not see a profit if he gives away product to someone because they follow you and sign up for your email list. Today I have realized that not every dollar is worth the headache.
This is truth. Free isn’t free. You need to build a strong foundation then a strong structure. You need as much control as possible. If you don’t control you will lose control!

Yes, building an email list is improtant. Actually, it always was important, no matter what media you use to get them. And website is not needed (not a typical website), you just need an high converting landing page, where you connect autoresponder for follow ups. Its less expensive than a website that web developer would make. In fact, that type of website is hurting business, rather than helping it.
That’s what I want a landing page just to take in emails and about me section. A lot of people Iv notice keep dm me on IG with questions or collab and I just need to capture and further those relationships

Likewise. We thought we were crazy doing this with our label. Now I don't feel so. The way I looked at it is, I have had social media for so long and forget the burden of having to learn them all and format content to suit each (4x the work) they bought me no progress and added little value to my life or business. We already have our own sites so why not utilise them as a full HQ? We can reach as far as we're ready to work that way. Good luck on your Journey!

100% correct, as usual, Roberto! I built my website before any of my social media and use it as a hub where my audience can find me. FB seems very limiting and IG is my main social but it’s sooo saturated. I started my email list in fall of 2019 and I love having that connection with clients and other art enthusiasts. I send a monthly art and creativity based newsletter run it all out of my Squarespace so it’s easy to integrate with my blog and portfolio. Thanks, Great advice as always!
