We decided to commemorate our daughter’s diagnosis day. Whatever the outcome, she is still our amazing child and we will always support her. We planned a fun family day date, took lots of photos, and then had her evaluation appointment later in the afternoon. We were told she was level 3 autistic, finally- we could move forward with getting the correct resources in place. It was the beginning of our ASD journey and that was a good thing because it helped us understand our child better. “Leaning in” is the best way to move forward with the diagnosis. It is natural to fear what you don’t know but the opposite is also true, so as parents and advocates we need to inform ourselves. Unfortunately, there is no solid roadmap to help navigate you but google and online support groups is a great way to get started. Also remember that autism is not a tragedy, it’s just a different way of being and there is no shame in that. #differentNOTless
Dear Mary, What does it mean when a child has autism, refuses to talk but in terms of memory he can remember everything. I mean if a child can calculate. We have 15 chairs but we need 73. Then he types 58. How many more seats do you need. Then he types 58. He also translates sentences from English to Dutch and he can also type in Spanish. He learned it all on youtube. He also knows the name of each country's leader and capital, and in which continent it is located. Can he learn even more in the future? He doesn't talk, he types, but he can pronounce words and sing
