Fridays at 2pm on BBC 5 live.
I love this film. Mark forgot to mention that it has the best acting by a cat of all time. That final scene....
A phenomenal piece, with eclectic style of vision, sound, and mood. This movie offers novelties with a lasting impression on the viewer. It's hard to imagine any authentic criticisms against this movie, only critics enviously bittered by the emergence of such a brilliant work.
I know! I'm honestly surprised that so many people don't like it.
I as glad to hear Mark credit the sound design, which was striking and reminiscent of American Graffiti.
I'm glad Mark liked it, I saw it last week and loved it. Might be my favourite film of 2015 so far.
I love your channel.
I watched this film on silent for the first time as I had to proctor some tests while teaching.
Then watched it again with the sound. Loved it even more the second time.
I'm not a film critic, and although there are some posts on here from people who either are or wish they were, I just know whether or not a film keeps me watching. I couldn't take my eyes off this one. It has a mesmerizing quality, at least for me.
That is very honest and modest of you. I do call myself a film buff among friends and couldn’t take my eyes off either. It is not only mesmerising but hypnotising.
A film to be experienced not watched.
I'm glad he mentioned Persepolis because that's all I could think about when I watched this
I think if a film get's compared to a Leone western and Eraserhead you can guarantee I'll be seeing it. Sounds very compelling, I'll be seeing it tomorrow on this recommendation!
Woo -- So glad he enjoyed it. I loved this thing.
And the Oscar for best supporting actor in a feline roll goes to Masuka as the cat.
I loved this film. It's fixed in my memory.
ys it so good?

I couldnt believe how much i loved this movie
It's a very "cool" movie and I don't hate it, but like someone else said there is no plot or character arcs. So essentially nothing happens. That might drive American movie goers crazy but I commend the creators for trying something different.
what movie were you watching because I watched a movie with a plot and character arcs? Just because it doesn't do it through dialogue?
So good! Absolutely loved it
Thanks folks. Fantastic review.
As this just come out in theatres in the UK? The DVD is out in the US.
I loved it. Instant favourite.
Loved this film!!!!!!
Whoa! She looks scary from that still. I'll put it on my to-see list.
Sounds interesting! I hope it gets the distribution it deserves.
Thanks!
UK Netflix?
I personally don’t see any similarities of a western, having a few scenes with a western score don’t make it one. And this movie as is much an Iranian movie, as Snowpiercer is a Korean movie, having an amerian-iranian director with choppy dialogue of Farsi doesn’t make this an Iranian movie. Btw this movie was produced by Vice, that should be a warning in it self
BilboB Agreed. Just because there's a lack of actors in your film to fill the set doesn't mean it's a Western. It's only Western in that it's essentially an American film in Iranian garb...and definitely not a Western in genre terms.
+velocirapta There are definitely similarities, you just have to be a bit more perceptive. Nobody's saying that the lack of actors = a western. The use of music and lack of dialogue/overly long takes of reactions and and staring has a lot in common with the style of Sergio Leone's westerns. Additionally, the way the vampire appeared between scenes out of seemingly nowhere to take revenge reminded me of Charles Bronson's character in Once Upon a Time in the West.
Hollywood needs to learn something....
This movie sounds interesting. I might check it out.
Luvie1980 You should, it's fantastic!
ZeppelinBigFan Cool.
Luvie1980 Please don’t, I might as well give you a warning, it's nothing but a pretentious L.A. hipster film, you should rather watch Only Lovers Left Alive or Let The
Right One In.
ZeppelinBigFan Ok how about dull, boring, no story, no character development, style over substance. But that just my opinion.
10/10.
How about that ravine full of bodies lying out in the open? I haven't seen that since I saw Night and Fog in high school.
Saw it the other night, it feels a bit like a short film that's been dragged out. Not a bad film, but a lot of style over content. Very californian hipster type thing. Basically a love story. I've seen worse.
Visually was good
I've just seen this. Liked it a lot; cool soundtrack with a very weird vibe that constantly wrong-foots you.
Made me feel a little sorry for Ryan Gosling though; this is how you do it Ryan lol. This is how you turn your genre fetishes into something entirely your own.
Really did remind me of Jim Jarmusch throughout [the guitar sounds had an almost Dead Man feel to it], also reminded me of David Lynch; the principle male character made me think of James [I think that's his name] in Twin Peaks.
All in all good - stylish and pulpy in all the right ways
:)
The film’s black & white visuals are unforgettable & stylish as the film’s well acted, well crafted, stylish & original as the film’s comparable to Let The Right One In (2008) & the film’s one of the best subtitled horror films ever made. (95%) (5/5 stars) (positive)
Kermode review was good, except he neglected to compliment the production´s feline thespian facilitator of the third act.
If you´ve seen the movie, you know what I mean.
If I watch this film and i don't find it that good I might stop watching film reviews. because the review doesn't really mean anything if your not like the reviewer.
HELLO SELINA!!
Halloween
It's a 30 minute student film project stretched out over feature length, that does nothing but hit hipster marks (vintage vinyl, twenty-somethings with skateboards, a guy who looks like that guy from "Die Antwoord", etc) and has as much to do with Iranian film-making as Turkish Star Wars. Ponderous, flatly acted, painfully derivative (it doesn't just lift shots from "Nadja", "Eraserhead" and "Near Dark", it repeats the same ripped off shot about a dozen times apiece) and has about the same semiotic depth as a bad graphic novel. However, the acting from the cat is excellent. You should worry when a cat is the best actor in your film.
Are you kidding? In the car, the cat kept looking straight into the camera.
Sounds like someone is just plain jealous.
@@EmlynBoyle100% this poster is jealous. Using pompous language and calling things hipster is the classic move from someone who wishes they could make a movie but only can write about something they could never do
Ooooh a James Dean look a like dressed as Dracula meets a real vampire on a skateboard.. Lets plays a indie hit waaay to loud... And then cut to a ballong dancing in the wind. This movie drove me mad.
KonradUberstorff It's like a kooky 12 year old girl got a budget to recreate an amalgamation of her favourite things. I was shocked to find out Amirpour is in her 30's...the film is incredibly shallow on all levels!
Simon Mayo is unbearable
So what you're saying is that if the film is overstuffed with references to other well known and much better movies then this film is obviously great?
I found "A Girl...." dry, unimaginative and painfully pretentious. A movie in search of a story line. A movie that is cool to like...But it's all so subjective isn't it.
viclis11 Yup. This film made Lost River look like Boyhood.
Actually, calling a movie "pretentious" just because it doesn't satisfy your tastes makes you pretentious
I've always found that people who use the word pretentious are pretty...well you know. I'd rather not use that word. It makes you think you sound important though. Nice touch throwing the word subjective at the end too. XD
Sounds like a pretentious bait-and-switch.
"Hey look at this daring Iranian film!!!", but it turns out to just be an American film with Iranian dialogue.
+Vebinz to be honest, the amount of regulations and rules they have in Iran when it comes to filmmaking and what you can and can't show on screen somewhat limits Iranian cinema. Check out an Iranian filmmaker called Jafar Panahi it'll explain what i mean
Terrible film. Cherry-picking from vague influences, with absolutely no depth and was cringing throughout. Just because it's in black and white, or the dialogue is in Farsi, doesn't mean it's 'interesting'. It isn't a Western, or a horror, and definitely not a great example of feminist cinema. It's most certainly all style and no substance - I am befuddled by the good reviews!

I was also thoroughly disappointed watched it on netflix last night, based on Kermodes review, it has a few horror elements, but it is definitely not a horror movie, I was expecting a western horror movie, which sounded great, but is neither. I also don’t understand why Kermode mentions Lynch, there were basically two scenes with the
construction site, where there were those sound effects he talked about, thought from this review it would be played throughout the movie to create tension or unsettlement. Basically everything Kermode mentioned in this review is not in the movie (enough).
Yep, it was less than the sum of its parts from both a writing/thematic and stylistic angle. Kermode frustrates me when he praises something like this because it's almost as if he's just in love with the idea of the film rather than the content of it - something everybody's guilty of now and then, but in this case it's so obvious how uninspired this film is. I think way too much attention has been put on the film, and perhaps Kermode has been caught up in the hype. It's distinctly worse-than-average filmmaking, and I don't exactly expect Amirpour to surprise me with a masterpiece next time around.
velocirapta The vampire ends up "just in need of love from a good man". Not feminist at all, is my conclusion.
velocirapta I enjoyed it a lot. I think the film contains a lot to think about - the story itself isn't particularly complex, but if you start thinking about the film as a film (and not as a narrative) it is a lot more interesting. Also, no, it isn't a Western, or a horror, but I don't see how that is a bad thing.

he is just dropping genres and movie references. where the is actual review.
+metalsabatico he talks about the cinematography, the characters, the soundtrack. A lot more about the films crafts then most critics.
metalsabatico more of an indirect positive review. I can tell from his tone of voice that he liked it.
This is his style. I don't always agree with his opinions but he is talking about the scenes, the make up of the scenes, language aspects, politics and genre. What more could you want.
i made it 30 mins in and gave up, looked good but wasnt enjoying it at all
urgh Kermode is so irritating.
Why?
