  • Part 2 of 3
the vast site at Heathrow - a few jet-wings from the live runways - has been left to rot.
Eerie snaps give a glimpse of another world, with layers of moss and dust covering one-time critical training equipment.
Flight simulators used by pilots to execute their professional teaching modules lie unused beneath layers of dirt and grime.
Inside model plane interiors, rows of aircraft seats are caked in dust.
Layers of moss can be seen on once busy desks at the former British Airways training centre

Hangars, once a thriving community for thousands of airline staff, have been allowed to turn derelict.
Desks where crew were given last minute lectures before flights are covered in moss and mould and plaster from crumbling ceilings.
Training manuals are almost obscured in dirt after being abandoned for years.
BA’s Cranebank hub at Heathrow has been left to rot for at least five years
"It's a sad sight, and unbelievable that Cranebank was seemingly abandoned overnight.
"It could be a scene from a post-apocalyptic action movie; with the once bustling hub abandoned
"It is a real shame the simulators and other equipment were not given away to charity or museums.
"The millions of passengers passing through Heathrow in recent years would have no idea this lies at the beating heart of the airport.”
At Cranebank, staff used to be put through their paces in case of inflight emergencies. Real-life scenarios played out there included cabin crew escaping from a plane down a chute.
Flight simulators used by pilots lie unused beneath layers of dirt and grime

They also got the chance to enter a smoke chamber, experience a pilot incapacitation exercise, and practise getting people onto a life raft if a plane lands in the sea.
Pilots and cabin crew were based at the hub, east of the two main Heathrow runways, which was understood to have had issues with asbestos.

@15:38 I remember in the weeks after the 9-11 attacks people chatting about how the Microsoft Flight Simulator for 2000 or 2001 let you fly into the World Trade Center towers. Microsoft did some tweaking on their next public flight simulator software.

Amazing vid, loved it. Can't believe a place that size with all that stuff in it just gets left. So wasteful.

This is why I love watching Matt’s videos, he actually knows what he’s talking about, I’ve seen a few videos on this place that was just a lot of umming and erring, umm, big building, err some old bits of stuff.
Really fascinating to see this, the two 737 simulators have likely been left behind as the type is obsolete, that particular marque has virtually died out, it dates back to the mid 80’s and BA ceased all 737 operations by 2001. It’s likely that prior to closing they would have made side revenue allowing other airlines to rent the simulators but the 737-400 is a very rare bird these days, most still around will be around 25-30 years old, the one that went down in January was the same marque and age will likely be a major focus in the investigation. The two empty halls were 747-400 simulators, they were likely sold as that type was built up to 2008 so will fly for years to come all though mostly cargo now, covid has killed the big jets
Fun fact about Boeing's, the flap leaver has a miniature flap for its lever, the undercarriage a small wheel, the spoilers a miniature spoiler etc. The theory is that the pilot has a back-up, if they were under a heavy workload or there was smoke etc they could operate the controls by touch and feel. Airbus all you get is a joystick and generic switches.
Keep up the explores matt, keeping us all sane in lockdown!

The sim computer mainframes have been removed. What you see are the systems that drove the CRT image generators (projectors) on the old Sims, tech was 1980s pre COTS computer tech.

Another great explore. I’m with you on copper thieves and anyone who trashes places for no reason. As you say must be 100’s of millions down the pan when they could have got office reclamation in to remove desks and chairs but now they are beyond it with all the water damage. I’ve been in places like this and I could smell it in my mind. Anyway, onto the next one, sounds exciting. Andy UK

Makes you wonder why people do not clear out the buildings so nothing to look at and people would stop going rather than having to pay security over the years to keep people out. They must pay a lot more in security over the years compared to what it might cost to remove everything . Not that I am complaining nothing there, would mean no Matt and we can't have that
