Anybody on the fence, I’ve owned the original for about 7 years. I’ve used it as a midi controller for my daws, I’ve mapped it to control Serato and brought it on dj slots, I’ve used the 4 track as a notepad of sorts before I’m at my main daw, I’ve even bounced out some of those original tape tracks to the daw cuz the flavor was there, it’s all over an album I made called Gloomfeather on Spotify ;) specifically the tune Wonderful and Telechrome. This thing looks like a piece of candy but it is so damn powerful it feels like I’ll have it as part of my tool array for decades. Shoot I didn’t even talk about how fun the arpeggiator modes are! Thanks Hen!!
Agree ! Pro since 1998. The OP-1 field is one of the most inspiring devices I've had for years. Nothing does what it does, the tape model and portability are game changing. All the details, with the sequencers, samplers and workflow, are all designed to inspire, and they do!

Stolen Focus was good man! I enjoyed the audiobook. Thinking of the field. Like you said, its a lot but I do some soundtrack work in a semi professional capacity and I travel a lot for my other "day job." I've had the orginal and something I can add about it, is that while everyone knows its a great "groovebox" and standalone unit (with limitations) but it is also killer at the home studio if I just want to layer some quick synth/drum/sample based sounds. Really easy to tweak in a mix. I find other grooveboxes hard to add to a DAW song in post, but the OP1 feels like an instrument on that front.

I just ordered mine yesterday and I’m hoping it’s the perfect compliment to my iPad workflow ( bm3 and Klevgrand plugins mostly) I’m tired of lugging around 4 different synths, a mixer, a MIDI controller, a sequencer, an audio interface, and working in a box on top of it. I’m digging the idea of one piece of gear and an iPad to produce professional results. Also… I’ve spent way more than 2 grand on equipment so I’m not pressed about the price
I just finished "Stolen Focus," and I had no idea how profound it woudl be. It's very much shining the mirror on the companies, and on us as users. I'm planning to do something radical this week, thanks to this book. Related to it is an audio book that was released today, "The Chaos Machine." I'm already sucked into the first chapter; it might be worth your time to check out. Enjoy your week!
I have the original OP-1 and I can tell you it's been a phenomenal experience to have. It produces really fat lofi sequences and I'm sure the OP-1 Field can take that even further with the different tape emulations and a new sound synthesis. Can't wait to get my paws on one. Thanks for the review.

The ASR-10…sometimes I wish I had that instead of the MPC 2000, but I still made it do what it do back then. Teenage makes great stuff but they stay outta my price range. I’ve seen the OP-1 used in a lotta lo-fi tracks, almost as ubiquitous as the SP-404, so this might be the one time I say “Damn a unified Germany, let’s DO this!!”
Yeah a heavy battle back in the day between the ASR and the MPC… never got into the MPC because it was either you work with one or the other. Always appreciate you checking out the vids fam 🙏🏼
That is a really sweet-looking piece of kit! I have enough gear right now that I'm slowly working in for future live shenanigans still to learn, but my immediate gear to learn is the SP404 MK2. I really do like what you said about focusing on the art and doing what it takes to put the computer and distractions aside, and some people who have already used the MK2 can attest to getting lost in the flow, so looking forward to that. I'll also get the "Focus" audiobook tomorrow and check it out. Who knows if I'll get into the OP-1 universe, because right now my first thing is actually finishing songs (yessir, Logic is lit). My first piece of gear was a Tascam 4-Track at 18. You really had to be focused on your takes and music... once you committed to the bounce that was it!!! I financed a brand new ASR10 from Bill's Music House (Baltimore MD) a few years later. It got stolen so I bought another one off of Ebay years later. I think I like this OP-1 tho. Welcome back Bro!!!

Thanks for the video. You make a credible case for the OP-1 Field. I chose the Polyend Tracker. It is $600 and almost as portable. I have been able to make almost any music I want on the Tracker. I would be interested in your comparison of the two devices.

Dude! the ipad & op1f combo is THE way to go. What daw do you use? Cause Ableton just released an app for iphone and ipad turning the iphone basically into an op1f.
After the opening of the video and mentioning the ASR-10, I was disappointed you didn't come back to that during the video to talk about conceptual/workflow similarities between them and what exactly brings back that same vibe for you. also to each their own, but let's be honest here, plenty of devices at much lower price points that would allow one to disconnect from the usual computer environment. I haven’t had those issues. But I get why people wouldn’t want to invest in something that might give them those issues. For me it’s been fine, no major issues at all.
You can make beats and you can record vocals but it’s gonna take some time to record full records on the op-1 field. There are way easier options to make full records.

@@jasonrsk8 Same as what the SP404MK2? (The SP404MK2 is an effector and audio interface which are core reasons why it works with the MPC so well. Infact all Akai has to do in the next update is allow users the ability to change the sample rate to 48khz and, it`s a marriage made in heaven).
Playing keys is somewhat doable, but what I like to do is use the Bluetooth Midi functionality and play keys on another keyboard when I really want to play.
looking for a device to add multiple tracks to and beaver edit on the go I got the op-1 was hoping to add FourTrax to another device on the go so I can make a full Track full song was wondering if you knew anything out there that does that
Great video! Only thing that’s not working for me is the connection with iPhone to record videos and use the op-1 fields audio, am I missing something?
Make sure you try it with an official usb-c to lightning cable and use the stock camera app. Once you have that setup, it should be plug and play. It’s been working flawlessly for me 🙏🏼
I bought this a week ago before seeing this video, but you nailed the point on why it’s worth the price to some. The features (including the fact that the firmware updates already have been fire just imagine what’s next) alone make it worth it and I’ve had the original 2 years now. The upgrades are insane and the instant connection to iOS is super fast content creation on the go. All the things an entire room of synths I’ve got can’t do (at least I can sample them all into the field and go!!)
It works ok. I wish there were more features in blocs wave for syncing with different devices and apps. I use blocs wave, AUM and the op-1 field tighter and that combo is 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼✨✨✨

@@jasonrsk8 Same as what the SP404MK2? (The SP404MK2 is an effector and audio interface which are core reasons why it works with the MPC so well. Infact all Akai has to do in the next update is allow users the ability to change the sample rate to 48khz and, it`s a marriage made in heaven).

Playing keys is somewhat doable, but what I like to do is use the Bluetooth Midi functionality and play keys on another keyboard when I really want to play.

looking for a device to add multiple tracks to and beaver edit on the go I got the op-1 was hoping to add FourTrax to another device on the go so I can make a full Track full song was wondering if you knew anything out there that does that

Great video! Only thing that’s not working for me is the connection with iPhone to record videos and use the op-1 fields audio, am I missing something?
Make sure you try it with an official usb-c to lightning cable and use the stock camera app. Once you have that setup, it should be plug and play. It’s been working flawlessly for me 🙏🏼
I bought this a week ago before seeing this video, but you nailed the point on why it’s worth the price to some. The features (including the fact that the firmware updates already have been fire just imagine what’s next) alone make it worth it and I’ve had the original 2 years now. The upgrades are insane and the instant connection to iOS is super fast content creation on the go. All the things an entire room of synths I’ve got can’t do (at least I can sample them all into the field and go!!)
Congrats for the investment! Is the OP-1 manager app working well for the OP-1 field?
It’s working ok. Needs to be updated as well as the field needs proper MTP support with iOS devices

It works ok. I wish there were more features in blocs wave for syncing with different devices and apps. I use blocs wave, AUM and the op-1 field tighter and that combo is 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼✨✨✨
