  • In this video, I share new blooms of Bsn. Maikai, Bc. Clear Stars, and C. Maui Plum. All of these plants are getting way too big for me as I struggle to move the pots around to show these heavy plants from the Cattleya alliance.

    No wonder you are running out of space! Look at these monsters! Congratulations, you're taking excellent care of your orchids! Very beautiful flowers! The tall one must have some C. tigrina in its background I suppose! Thanks for sharing!

      Good eye - Maui Plum is 25% tigrina and 50% guttata. It is getting really more fragrant - I could smell it 25 ft away this morning - it caught my nose - I hesitated, looked around and saw it!

    Beautiful orchids and awesome growing. The last orchid that's climbing out of its pot, why don't you pot it up by placing the whole pot into a bigger pot. You would not have to disturb the orchid at all.
    Just an idea.

      Thanks - that is a great idea and what most people would do. I may end up doing that but this plant is hanging in a big pot already and a bigger pot will make it even heavier. I am afraid that it will be well beyond the weight capacity of my metal hanger. My growing space is small and I do not have room for heavy free standing pots. Thanks for watching and for the suggestion. The stupid thing just got too damn big!

    What a wonderful problem to have...

      It is interesting - the plants really put on a show when they get big. But, I am running out of room for big plants. This does not seem like an issue now but I have a ton of seedlings in 2 inch pots that are progeny of these plants and are going to get really big...🙄😲

    C. Maui Plum is a wonderful flower. Have you tried using the pollinia on one of your known fertile compact plants?

    • @plantpropagator
      @plantpropagator  3 месяца назад +2

      Thanks for the suggestion - it will not hurt to try this. I did try to self it and there was no swelling of the ovary so I stopped there. I will try crossing it to another plants that is a good parent and see what happens - will self it again too.

      @@plantpropagator I have a wonderful C. labiata, good shape, size and fragrance, which will not "catch" pollination at all, or even produce its own pollinia. You can see some "protopollinia" in its anther, underdeveloped little tiny things. I suppose it is a genetically caused condition. Could it be the result of a polyploid genome?

    • @plantpropagator
      @plantpropagator  3 месяца назад +1

      @@Naturamorpho Yes, this could result from triploidy where you cannot get an even split of the chromosomes. But, there are a number of other things that can lead to sterility - interruption of one of the many genes involved in producing gametes....

    Would you like to sell a small
    division of your beautiful Maikai? I'd be so thrilled! I just love your videos. Thanks for sharing

      Maybe - I am not sure when I will divide it - you should wait for new pseudobulb formation and some root growth. You can reach out to me at TheOrchidPropagator@gmail.com - the parent plant was taken apart with a SawZall so maybe, I will have to get one soon!

      I do need to either get rid of the big ones or at least divide them into many pieces and get rid of most of it!

    What fertilizer use for does orquid they are beautifull

    • @plantpropagator
      @plantpropagator  3 месяца назад +2

      Thanks for your comment and question - I make up my own mix - the major component is 3/4 teaspoon per gallon Better Gro plus orchid fertilizer, 1/4 teaspoon per gallon Miracle Gro water soluble fertilizer, 1/4 teaspoon per gallon Epsom salts, and a pinch of water soluble seaweed extract. I also use Nutricote (not osmocote) time release. I fertilize weekly with this weak fertilizer and my plants are watered with irrigation water 3 days per week. All watering and fertilizing is done so that I stop once the water drips off the pot or plant roots. Maybe, it is time to do another fertilizer video??...

    Couldn’t you just drop that massive orchid into a larger terra-cotta pot?

    • @plantpropagator
      @plantpropagator  3 месяца назад +1

      That is a great idea and it is what most other orchid growers would suggest. The problem is that all of my orchids hang because I have limited growing space. I only have one orchid in a huge pot that sits on a chair. The remainder are all moderate sized that are in pots that are hanging from my fence or my orchid pergola. I am a little jealous of people who have more land and more orchid growing space. Great idea - just not practical for me. 😁
