    The one @9:20 that you didn't know the name of and thought was David Sanders is BC Maikai (see "Kitchen Time! - Let's Sort out BC Maikai", Sep 6 2021). The one @26:59 should be Frances Fox.

      Each orchid has it's 'happy place' - sometimes all that's needed for an improvement is just moving the plant.

    I love these types of videos. It is super helpful for new growers to see what you think of various findings as you are looking over your plants such as signs of pests, fungus, bacteria, nuritional deficiencies, root issues, etc and what to do about them. It is like watching a class on pattern recognition of problems in orchids. I have learned more from your videos than any others on youtube. Great content!

    I really like the information in this video. Tomorrow I will check and shift my Laelia Anceps and my Laelia Purpurata. For the latter I didn’t know it needed a rest and it’s mid winter and the sheath is fully formed so perfect time for a rest. Thanks for that. Pip 🌺🌹

      I've never found out exactly how long the rest for the purpurata should be? I suppose until the buds start to grow (and if no buds, then when the new growths start?)

    I love cattleyas! I'm obsessed with them, so I very much like this type of content. Hope, you'll make a vid about the ones now having sheaths. I'm curious if they bloom or not. And I'm also fond of your beautiful English accent. Your videos are more or less English lessons for me, as well. Greetings from Hungary! 🤗

      Many Catt types grow ok in the home so these should be more popular than they are - perhaps they're just not as easy to come by.

    For mounted orchids with a problem rotting, and you don't want to remount it, you can try giving it a good spray of hydrogen peroxide, letting it do its job for about 3 minutes and letting dry before attempting to rehydrate it

  • @sandrag8656

    These damn scale... Lost some Cattleyas to them (or the treatment) in the past too.
    Hope you'll get rid of them and find a perfect place for every Cattleya, so that they will all bloom for you.
    I had to move too.
    There is only a east facing window for them and they get direct sunlight from 8:00 to 12:00 in the summer (little to hot), if sun is shining, but then... I am not shure if it is enough.
    In winter the light is even less (drops earlier behind a house and less light alltogether).
    They started their new growths very late, some in Juli, two did nothing yet... I'll see if they can mature...and if they'll bloom.
    If not, I'll have to buy additional light.
    I miss my big bright south facing window... 😥

  • @sharonpopp6470
    @sharonpopp6470 2 года назад

    Thank you Roger. Cattleyas are my favorite, and they always have been. I bought quite a few in 2020, and most have not bloomed yet. I am seeing sheaths now, and that is exciting. I have tried Cal Magic fertilizer recently, and I feel it is magic for my plants. It is good to try new things, but I start off with a very diminished dose from what is recommended. I gradually increase cautiously under observation. Love your videos!

      I'll have to use the repotted/mounted date from my notes and go back to that time and find the video - virtually all would have been filmed. That will identify the orchids and I can get some labels done. (I didn't bother with some as I didn't think they would make it.)

  • @carolesykes7955
    @carolesykes7955 2 года назад

    Hi again, yes this was very useful. It's good to be reminded about things which tend to get forgotten and then they all end up getting the same treatment. Just lately I've been buying a few more miniature Cattleyas because I like the flowers and they take up less space but they burn very easily and seem to need something in media to retain more moisture. A couple have even arrived potted in moss with lovely roots so I'm worried as to whether I should repot in bark or moss in the future? Perhaps you could advise when you talk about them again?
    Hope Mojo is feeling happier now 🤗

    • @RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
      @RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai  2 года назад

      The amount of moisture need in the media is relative to the day-time temps - the higher the temps, the more they need. In cooler weather, too much moisture can lead to root rot.

    Did you lose your Sophronitis (Cattleya) brevipedunculata? I think it was on a clay mount. You mentioned that you were not a fan of that type of mount, but thought it might keep the roots cooler.

    YES! Perfect timing 😃. Very informative and interesting, good learning opportunity 👍🏻. Two years ago , I started ( again) growing Cattleya , love them . One of my ( only 2 ) Cattleya type just finished blooming and other one ( Rlc. hybrid) has a big sheath that looks like a leaf ☺. Existing time for me because it is ( or it will be ,if nothing goes wrong ) first time bloomer . “They” say that some Cattleya 🌱should not be fertilized when flower buds start showing. Is there such a thing? Thank you for sharing your knowledge, advice and tips on how to care for orchid plants 😊💐. I do very much enjoy watching this kind of videos 👏🏻,good stuff!!! Take care.
    Ps. How is “ fluffy “ cat doing?

    • @RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
      @RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai  2 года назад +1

      Always take that step back as ask 'what would happen in nature?' Would the nutrients stop being washed down just for that one plant because it had buds? Fluffy-cat is doing ok.

    Hi Roger. Why don't you # your pots & mounts & put the #'s names in your computer? It's a back up since you don't always put the tags back on & it'll keep you from guessing the name. You can take a picture of ea but you'd have to keep up with them more.
