He got a taste of pride and he liked it. Running with Scissors hints at Marco's borderline obsession with adventure; he was going to abandon his family to stay and go on adventures in Hekapoo's dimension if Star hadn't convinced him to go back home. Marco has grown too cocky for his own good; he needed to get taken down a peg, and he gotten that - three times. Sophomore Slump: Marco acts like a cocky jerk and pushes his friends away and Jackie breaks up with him. He realizes his mistake and apologizes to his friends. Lint Catcher: Marco gets a reality check when he realizes he isn't a knight at all and the cape is basically meaningless (notice how he isn't wearing it in the next episode). Trial by Squire: After being called out by a squire, Marco was determined to prove his worth as a squire. When he failed, his ego significantly deceased as he vented his doubtfulness about his accomplishments and worth. Marco is no longer the cocky, prideful guy he was in the past episodes. This is his much needed development, his character arc. Star was at her lowest in season 2B and now it's Marco's turn to get the same treatment.

If you ask me I think Star kinda owes him the stay, she came into his life and he had to deal with her for a year so now it’s stars turn to take care of the 3rd wheel

He's defeated numerous monsters on many occasions. 2. He saved the kingdom. 3. He's actually a rather capable and impressive fighter. 4. Helped star through her entire journey to become who she is now. Including putting up with all her craziness. 5. Accepted star when she literally did the exact same thing he has done. 6. Obtained his own dimensional scissors. Which was no easy task. And many of the people with a pair were either gifted them, got them by their station, or they are stolen. Which brings me to my final point. During the dimensional scissors episode Marco grew to become one hell of a warrior. So we already are well aware of his potential as a warrior and thus a knight. While attempting to earn his scissors, yeah remember he earned his, he survived what should have been unsurvivable conditions. Defeated countless monsters, demons, and all powerful inter dimensional beings. And did so for years, not sure how long exactly but to me it looked like he was in his late 20's to early 30's by the end of it all. So yeah he's going through some shit. Give the guy a brake I would say he's earned that to.

After the year's over and her parents had her evaluated on her powers, she then returns home.
I think the reason why Star had to go back to Mewni was because even though she has a lot of power from her wand that power might become dangerous like Eclipsa. When Star was being evaluated Baby said that her powers were kinda like Eclipsa. Also Glosserick is in a weird state and can’t really help Star so that’s why she needs to stay in Mewni with her parents so they can watch over her magic and makes sure that it doesn’t become dangerous.
I think that Marco is just having a hard time. Marco is most likely is trying to get over Jackie has been Marco’s crush like forever. It still most be hard and learning that Star has a crush on him, Tom is back in the picture, and he doesn’t leave with his family can be stressful. He might just trying to get us to the way things are. My opinion though...
