Love this planning video and all the resources you use. It’s unique to find how to homeschool one student, and I love the approach and you how and your husband share the day. X
I plan by the 5 day week, but holidays are flexible. I look for holiday activity sheets on par with the lesson or make my own. And simple crafts are a must. I too love my detailed schedule and checking off each subject/day.
Loved the video. When I do our planning I plan out for a four day week leaving Friday open for co-op every other week and library and grocery shopping on the other with my son active learning and helping with both grocery shopping is an awesome life skills tool and my boy loves being the one to read our shopping list and crossing stuff off. Off topic sorry but yes we plan for a four day week loosely we typically write down the subjects and curriculum we want to use them fill in what pages and work we got done after depending on my son's medical and anxiety needs for the day can dictate if we have a he did twice what we wanted to get done day or a he's spending the day cuddled on the couch with his blanket and watching science videos on RUclips or horrible histories day. So we are very flexible in planning even tho I really really want to plan everything down to the page and hour it just doesn't work with my little dudes needs so we don't. 😅

LOVE THIS! I think I will adopt something similar in the future. I am very new to this, having just pulled my girls out of public school mid year last year, so I am still learning what works best for us in every part of our homeschool. For now, I am reverse record keeping with just a mental note of what subjects are priority and which are extra and making sure we get at least all of our priority subjects in at least 4 days a week. I have 1 weekly planner that I have a section for each child and a section for group subjects where I write down what was done after it is done. Then, because my state has a requirement of hours rather than a certain number of days, I have a binder for each child and in that I keep a weekly time log that I created myself where I write down how much time they spent on each subject. So far, this is working really well for us but I would like to get better at planning ahead. Honestly, I don't even plan for how many days a week we will do school because its not uncommon for us to do school all 7 days in some compacity. I LOVE when you say "We live a learning lifestyle." Learning doesn't only happen certain days of the week or times of the day. I don't count every single thing they do but they are so often learning something new or practicing something recently learned that I find it hard to not include that just because its Saturday at 2pm, you know? But, for that reason I find it really hard to plan ahead more than picking up where we left off in each curriculum at least 4 days out of the week.
For the year, I make a Year at a Glance spreadsheet based on a 36-week year. For my weekly planning, I use a BlueSky teacher planner. I plan on Thursday for the following week and move over anything from that week that we didn’t finish. Then I use my erasable pens to fill in what we’ll do the next week based on my Year at a Glance spreadsheet. 😊
I plan during the summer on an online planner that will forecast my end date for each subject. Then each week I write down my daily requirements that need to get done for my 4th grader. I like checking boxes too!
For my high schooler, I like to give him flexibility and control over his schedule. Do I just write down what needs to be done by Friday afternoon. That might look like do chapter 7 in government and take your quiz, or do two lessons in FLVS French and turn them in.
Regardless, I start my planning like you do…with my calendar and my non-negotiable things and then plug in what needs to be done. And I always overplan! We never accomplish all that I’ve planned.
I will plan for a week, writing out the name of the books/curriculum, but then add pg numbers after we do them because some days she likes to do 2 pages, other days none 😂 We're only in kindergarten so we're flexible. When we have big themes (Thanksgiving for November, advent for December) I will plan those out 2-4 weeks ahead so we have the books and materials.

My husband does steam as well. We have a pretty consistent schedule as far as what to do, though particular books and games will change. I do my planning on GoodNotes so I can easily edit, as well as copy and paste my schedule and just make minor edits for future days. I have 1 or 2 (max) days set up in advance since I like flexibility, but I do have a basic master schedule that shows what I generally want done on each day of the week, such as cursive on Wednesdays, Bible trivia on Tuesdays… etc. I’m a box checker as well.
I plan for the year, then the term (in NZ our school year is broken up into four 10 week segments) and then I plane what I would like down during the week. I write a family time table so the kids know when we will be doing group work or individual work. We don't always stick to the order but for my neurodiverse children them they like to see what is coming up. I generally plan our group work so i know what we are doing daily and for induvial work they just complete the next lesson.
I plan for six weeks, 5 days. Then each weekend I just have to make minor changes. It works for me.
Do you do a focused language/reading/grammar time?
Do u have a template of what the pages look like in ur planner that we can download so we can make a planner like that?? I would to use that set up!
Wait, at the beginning you said this is how you would plan in an ideal world. But what do you do when you don't plan? Are you just following checklists or you have your space set up in a way where you pull out resources as you go without a strict plan? I have ADHD and planning is not my strong point. I have a year overview and prefer open and go curriculum so it's easy to not plan and just do the next page/activity. It can still be challenging to have all the books and supplies ready for each week/topic in a curriculum.
