Shelter them. My mom never let me go play in the front yard of our home (facing a road). She also never left me alone with extended family members (aunts, uncles). She frequently educated me on the dangers of people offering me candy (the common lure we tell our children), and told me often that people are out there in the world to do harm (and she used specific and honest vocabulary to describe exactly what she meant--no metaphors or beating around the bush). Of course, there's so much more to protecting children than the simple things my mom did. Although I often doubted her efforts (I hated that I couldn't play in the front yard because it was a wide space and the grass was nicer), I've now been able to carry on the same caution efforts and frequently challenge churches, schools, and my peers to be hyper sensitive to children's safety. I had a friend of mine who actually became an offender. To say the least, it impacted me and I challenge everyone to be aggressive in the way they protect children.
